Sigma’s 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary is an APS-C lens, not a full-frame zoom. Its constant F2.8 aperture, image stabilization and 390g Sony E-mount weight make it an intriguing lighter-kit option for photographers who want telephoto framing without building around a full-frame system. Sigma announced Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF versions, with launch scheduled for October 22, 2026; availability and regional pricing should be checked locally.
What the Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 is—and is not
Sigma announced the 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary on October 8, 2026, as a constant-aperture APS-C mirrorless zoom. It is designed to cover APS-C sensors; the “full-frame alternative” idea is about the compactness and framing a photographer might want from an APS-C system, not full-frame sensor coverage. Sigma’s announcement describes the goal as drawing “the greatest possible mobility out of an APS-C system.”

The announced mounts are Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF. Sigma has not announced Nikon Z or other versions, so check the exact mount before buying. A lens mount must match the camera, and an APS-C lens should not be chosen on the assumption that it will provide full-frame coverage.
How its range compares with full-frame framing
The physical focal-length range is 50–120mm, and the maximum aperture remains F2.8 throughout the zoom. Sigma describes the range as approximately 75–180mm equivalent. DPReview reports a different equivalent range, 80–192mm, for the Canon RF version; equivalence depends on the camera format and mount, so these figures should not be treated as interchangeable. See DPReview’s early look.

Equivalent focal length describes angle of view, not a change in the lens’s actual focal length or a conversion to full-frame coverage. For a practical comparison with a full-frame telephoto zoom, first match the framing you need, then consider aperture, camera body, weight and verified image quality. The F2.8 maximum aperture is useful when light is limited or a shallower depth of field is desired, but it does not by itself establish that the APS-C and full-frame combinations will produce the same image or performance.
Portability and stabilization
Sigma specifies the Sony E version at 99mm long and 390g. DPReview reports a 67mm diameter for that mount. Those are Sony E figures, not confirmed dimensions for every version. They give the lens a credible portability case, but a fair system comparison should include the camera body and any other lenses being carried.
Rank #2
- Large F2.8 aperture and superb image quality
- Exceptionally compact and lightweight body ideal for mirrorless cameras
- Smallest and lightest F2.8 standard zoom for APS-C mirrorless
- Full-frame equivalent zoom range of 27-75mm
- High-speed autofocus with stepping motor
Sigma rates its OS2 stabilization at 6.5 stops at 50mm and 4.5 stops at 120mm, measured under CIPA guidelines on an APS-C mirrorless camera. These are manufacturer ratings, not a guarantee of the shutter speed or keeper rate every photographer will achieve. Stabilization can help reduce camera shake, but it does not freeze a moving subject.
What is known about autofocus, optics and weather protection
Sigma specifies an HLA linear motor for autofocus and says the optical design minimizes focus breathing, a change in framing as focus shifts that can matter in video. These are announced design features; they are not independent findings about tracking, focus speed or video performance.

DPReview reports an optical construction of 18 elements in 13 groups. Sigma specifies one FLD element, three SLD elements and four aspherical elements. Those component counts describe the design, not a substitute for tested sharpness, distortion, flare or bokeh results.
Sigma describes the structure as dust- and splash-resistant and says the front element has a water- and oil-repellent coating. The manufacturer explicitly says the lens is not waterproof and cautions against large amounts of water, so treat the resistance as protection against some conditions rather than permission to use it in heavy rain or submerge it.
Rank #4
- FLD glass elements along with two glass mold elements and one hybrid aspherical lens provide excellent correction of aberrations and allow for incredibly sharp images with great contrast
Can it replace a full-frame 70-200mm F2.8?
It may be a compelling alternative for someone whose priority is a lighter APS-C kit and whose subjects fit the lens’s framing range. It is not a direct one-for-one replacement based on focal length alone: compare the camera system, angle of view, aperture and desired depth-of-field look, stabilization, autofocus performance, price, and tested results for the work you actually do.
Sigma says the lens completes an APS-C F2.8 zoom trio with its 10-18mm F2.8 and 18-50mm F2.8, and that all three together weigh under 1kg. That combined-weight figure is Sigma’s claim and refers to the lenses, not a complete camera kit. For travel or event work, the trio may be a useful way to assess the weight of an APS-C setup against a body and lens combination built around full frame.

Price, launch timing and early impressions
Sigma’s announcement schedules launch for October 22, 2026, but does not give regional pricing. DPReview and TechRadar report $799, while TechRadar also reports £699; these reported prices should not be assumed to reflect current local stock or final checkout prices. Check the relevant Sigma site or retailer for your region.
Early reaction is promising but should not be mistaken for a completed review. DPReview’s Richard Butler describes being “genuinely stunned” by how small and easy to carry the lens is, while also acknowledging his personal enthusiasm for the product. The same publication characterizes its coverage as an early look with limited testing. TechRadar’s report likewise says its author had not personally tested the lens. These impressions support interest in the size, not a settled verdict on image quality or performance.
Sigma’s Japanese announcement lists a hood (LH585-01), front cap (LCF-55 IV), rear cap (LCR III) and pouch as supplied items. Package contents can vary by region, so confirm what is included with the seller.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- APS-C Sony E, Fujifilm X or Canon RF users: It offers a constant F2.8 telephoto zoom in an announced native mount for those systems.
- Photographers prioritizing a lighter kit: The 390g Sony E specification is an especially strong portability point, though other mount versions and the body add their own weight.
- Buyers needing proven performance before committing: Wait for fuller independent testing of the specific mount you plan to use, especially for autofocus, sharpness and video behavior.
- Full-frame camera owners seeking a full-frame lens: This is not that product; Sigma identifies it as APS-C, and its equivalent framing does not change its sensor coverage.
