Sierra and Meta Unveil Personal Agent Protocol, an Open Standard for How AI Agents Deal With Businesses

On October 6, 2026, Sierra announced the Personal Agent Protocol. It is an open standard, still in development, meant to define how a consumer’s personal AI agent connects to a business. Sierra is building it with Meta, Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. What exists today is an announcement and a roadmap. The specification has not been published, and the announcement offers no deployment data or independent testing. Source: Sierra, “Introducing Personal Agent Protocol”.

What problem the protocol targets

Sierra says personal agents usually reach businesses the way people do. They click through websites and apps, fill in forms, and fall back to a support phone line or web chat when that fails. The companies propose a more direct, standardized connection that could finish tasks securely and efficiently. That is their rationale and aim. The announcement does not measure how agents perform today or how the protocol would compare.

Who is developing it

  • Lead: Sierra, together with Meta.
  • Named partners: Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart.
  • Openness: Sierra describes it as an open standard that anyone can implement.

How the protocol is designed to work

According to Sierra, the protocol handles authentication, gives consumers control over what an agent can access, and lets businesses set boundaries and see what agents do.

Sessions and consent

A customer could start a guest session for a low-stakes task, such as checking product availability or a returns policy. If account access is needed, the customer could authenticate on the company’s page or use credentials already set up with their personal agent. The customer chooses read-only or write access.

The session is built on OAuth and can continue across channels. An early question and a later account action can therefore belong to one visit.

Three ways a business can connect

Route What the announcement says
Regular website The business lets the agent navigate its existing site.
APIs The business connects through APIs built on standards such as MCP or OpenAPI.
The company’s own agent Used for conversational tasks, such as a warranty claim.

Sierra’s summary: “The company decides what it makes available, the personal agent gets a consistent way to connect, and the customer gets a faster way to get things done.” This describes intent. It is not a demonstrated result.

What is still to come

Announced roadmap

  • A v0.1 specification, planned for later in October 2026.
  • Design workshops with interested parties.
  • A reference implementation.

These are plans. Until Sierra publishes them, the technical details, including how identity, permissions and logging work, cannot be checked.

Possible future extensions

  • More detailed permissions for specific actions.
  • Push notifications, such as flight-delay or order-shipment updates.
  • Payments that would let an agent complete a purchase without sharing a credit-card number.

The announcement frames these as possibilities, not features of the initial protocol.

What the partners say

The statements below come from companies involved in the effort, so they are not independent validation.

  • Tony Bates, Chairman and CEO, Genesys: “Personal AI is creating a new front door to the enterprise. Brands need a trusted way to know who an AI agent represents, what it’s authorized to do, its intent, and how to work with it securely.”
  • Mani Fazeli, VP Product, Shopify: the protocol “helps establish how agents and merchants can work together” on product questions, purchases, returns and exchanges.
  • Kevin Miller, Head of Payments, Stripe: Stripe is contributing “to give businesses a standard way to recognize their customers’ agents, efficiently interact with them, and shape their customer relationships.”
  • Shawn Malhotra, CTO, Rocket Companies: Rocket and Redfin are building agentic technology with Sierra, so a Muse agent can move from finding a home to securing financing.

What is not established

The announcement gives no independent security testing, adoption numbers, speed or reliability benchmarks, or consumer outcome data. It also does not compare the protocol with other agent standards or platforms. Claims that it makes agent transactions secure, faster or widely used are Sierra’s and its partners’ aims, not findings.

What to watch next

  • Whether the v0.1 specification appears on schedule and how it handles authentication and delegated permissions.
  • Whether the reference implementation lets outside developers build working clients and business endpoints.
  • Whether businesses beyond the named partners adopt it, and whether other personal-agent makers support it.
  • How it fits with MCP and OpenAPI, which the announcement says it builds on.
