On 14 October 2026, Siemens announced a strategic investment in Estonian energy-storage company Skeleton Technologies and an exclusive global partnership to sell and scale Skeleton products for data centers. The agreement extends Siemens’ infrastructure offer from the grid connection to the AI rack, using supercapacitors to manage the rapid power swings created by dense AI computing.

What Siemens announced

Siemens says it now has exclusivity to sell and scale Skeleton’s products in the data-center market worldwide. The companies describe the arrangement as an expansion of Siemens’ electrical-infrastructure portfolio, covering equipment and controls from a facility’s grid connection through to the AI rack.

The relationship is not new. Skeleton has been a Siemens technology partner since 2022, and Siemens became an investor in 2023. The 2026 announcement turns that relationship into a dedicated commercial route for Skeleton’s high-power storage systems in data centers.

“The race to scale AI is increasingly becoming a race for power,” Peter Koerte, a Siemens AG managing-board member and president of Smart Infrastructure, said in the announcement. He said operators need ways to expand capacity faster without waiting years for new grid and facility infrastructure.

Skeleton chief executive and co-founder Taavi Madiberk said the partnership combines Skeleton’s technology with Siemens’ industrial scale to accelerate AI-infrastructure deployment, increase computing capacity and improve energy efficiency.

Why AI workloads create a power problem

AI data centers do not draw a steady electrical load. Thousands of chips can synchronize their work, making demand rise or fall within milliseconds. The announcement describes resulting swings at megawatt scale within seconds.

Skeleton positions its supercapacitors as an “electrical shock absorber.” They can absorb those fast changes, reducing stress on servers, power-conversion equipment and the surrounding grid. Smoothing the peaks may let an operator support more computing in an existing facility or postpone some electrical and building upgrades, although the announcement does not quantify savings or capacity gains.

What supercapacitors contribute

  • Very fast response: they address millisecond-to-second fluctuations that conventional infrastructure may not handle efficiently on its own.
  • Peak-power support: they can supply or absorb short bursts around the facility’s normal power level.
  • Equipment and grid protection: buffering rapid changes can reduce electrical shock loads seen by upstream systems.
  • Higher rack density: smoothing demand is intended to help operators add compute without immediately rebuilding every part of the facility.

How the Siemens–Skeleton system is intended to deploy

Siemens says the offering can be installed in existing AC architectures and used in retrofit projects. The companies also describe a path toward future 800V DC data-center standards. That gives buyers two broad deployment contexts:

Deployment context What the announcement supports What remains unspecified
Existing AC facility Supercapacitor systems can be integrated into current AC electrical architectures and retrofit work. Site-specific ratings, installation time, costs and required switchgear changes are not stated.
New or future DC architecture The partnership includes a pathway toward 800V DC standards for data centers. No 800V product specification, timetable or field-performance result is provided.
Grid-to-rack portfolio Siemens intends to combine its electrical infrastructure with Skeleton storage for a single data-center offering. The announcement does not list a complete bill of materials or a packaged system price.

For a prospective project, the meaningful engineering questions are response speed, peak-power handling, compatibility with the site’s AC or planned DC architecture, deployment scale, effect on the grid connection and total infrastructure cost. The announcement establishes these as the relevant comparison axes but supplies no independent vendor comparison or performance benchmark.

Skeleton’s Estonian identity and manufacturing footprint

Skeleton Technologies is headquartered in Estonia. Its manufacturing expansion is centered on a €220 million SuperFactory in Markranstädt near Leipzig, which opened in November 2025. Skeleton says the plant makes graphene-based supercapacitors used in its GrapheneGPU systems.

According to the company, the factory supplies Siemens, General Electric and Hitachi Energy for European grid applications, as well as major US hyperscalers building AI infrastructure. Skeleton’s company description attributes its high-power systems to patented Curved Graphene material and lists Siemens among its trusted-by companies.

Is Skeleton really the “latest Baltic unicorn”?

That label is not established by the Siemens announcement or Skeleton’s published factory and company information. Those sources do not disclose a transaction valuation, Siemens’ ownership percentage or an explicit unicorn designation. “Unicorn” normally means a private company valued at at least US$1 billion; without a disclosed financing or valuation, the headline characterization should be treated as unverified rather than as a confirmed status.

What an existing data center should assess before a retrofit

The partnership makes retrofit a stated use case, but a real installation still depends on the facility’s electrical design and expansion plan. A buyer can structure an evaluation around these steps:

  1. Map the load profile: measure the speed and size of AI-driven power changes, including expected megawatt peaks.
  2. Define the connection point: determine whether buffering is needed near the utility connection, power-conversion equipment, busway or rack-level supply.
  3. Check AC compatibility: verify that the proposed supercapacitor system fits the site’s voltage, protection, controls and available space.
  4. Model expansion alternatives: compare the storage installation with a larger grid connection, additional substations or other facility upgrades.
  5. Plan for the architecture roadmap: if an 800V DC design is planned, confirm how today’s equipment can transition without stranding the retrofit investment.

Neither Siemens nor Skeleton has published a standard installation price, guaranteed payback period or independent test result for this partnership. Those figures will need to be established for each project.

Baltic data-center precedent: Tallinn’s Greenergy facility

Siemens’ Tallinn case study describes the Greenergy data center as a 14,500-square-meter facility powered by renewable energy. Siemens supplied building-management, energy-and-power-management and white-space cooling-optimization software.

The Tallinn example shows Siemens’ prior data-center work in the Baltic region, but it is a software, power-management and cooling case study rather than evidence of Skeleton supercapacitor performance.

What the deal could mean for AI infrastructure

Siemens gains an exclusive route to market for a storage technology aimed at one of AI data centers’ hardest infrastructure problems: fast, repeated changes in electrical demand. Skeleton gains access to Siemens’ global sales, engineering and systems-integration reach. The strategic value is therefore clearer than the financial value: the companies are targeting faster capacity expansion and less disruptive use of existing facilities, while the economics and measured performance remain project-specific.
