Side-by-Side vs. Double-Door (French-Door) Refrigerators: Space, Features, Fit, and Cost

Short answer: Choose a French-door refrigerator if you want wide, eye-level fresh-food storage for platters, trays, and large containers. Choose a side-by-side if you prefer vertical shelves for both frozen and fresh foods, eye-level freezer access, or narrower door swings. Neither layout is universally better. The practical winner is the model whose interior split, opening clearance, features, energy data, and current price match your kitchen and shopping habits.

First, define “double-door”

“Double-door refrigerator” is not a precise category name. In everyday retail language it can mean a French-door refrigerator: two doors across the upper fresh-food compartment and a pull-out freezer drawer below. It can also be used loosely for a side-by-side refrigerator, which has two full-height doors with the refrigerator on one side and the freezer on the other.

Maytag’s official comparison describes the French-door arrangement as “two evenly split doors on the top and a pull-out drawer on the bottom.” Its side-by-side description uses two narrower, full-height doors, with one vertical compartment dedicated to refrigeration and the other to freezing. This article uses “double-door” to mean the French-door layout so the two configurations are clearly separated.

Side-by-side and French-door refrigerators at a glance

Decision point Side-by-side French door What to check before buying
Fresh-food access Fresh and frozen sections run vertically; frequently used items in either section can be kept at eye level. The fresh-food compartment is high and wide, with the freezer below. Which foods do you reach for most often, and at what height?
Freezer organization Full-height shelves and bins support vertical organization and make individual levels easy to see. A lower pull-out drawer uses baskets, dividers, and shelves; organization varies considerably by model. Compare shelf, basket, and divider layouts rather than relying on the door style.
Refrigerator shelf width Narrower compartments can restrict platters, wide pans, and broad boxes. Wider shelves generally make large dishes and containers easier to store. Measure the widest item you routinely refrigerate.
Door and drawer clearance Two narrower doors can help in a tight aisle, but both doors and hinges still need clearance. Upper doors are relatively narrow, while the lower freezer drawer must travel outward. Measure doors, handles, hinges, counters, islands, and the full drawer path.
Capacity split Total capacity can be similar to a French-door model, often with a more even refrigerator/freezer division. Total capacity can be similar, with more space commonly assigned to fresh food. Compare total cubic feet and the separate refrigerator and freezer capacities.
Typical features Depending on the model: dispenser, adjustable shelves, spill-resistant shelves, lighting, and door storage. Depending on the model: dispensers, adjustable shelves, crisper drawers, wide or sliding shelves, and customized bins. Confirm the exact model’s specification; a layout does not guarantee a feature.
Starting price position Whirlpool says side-by-side models typically start at a lower price point. Whirlpool says French-door models may start higher, often reflecting the capacity or features of the compared models. Compare current, like-for-like models; there is no fixed dollar premium.
Energy use Configuration alone does not establish lower operating cost. Configuration alone does not establish lower operating cost. Use the exact model’s energy label, certification, and local electricity rate.

How the layouts change the way you use the refrigerator

Side-by-side: vertical visibility in both compartments

A side-by-side divides the cabinet from top to bottom. Frozen food is not concentrated in a low drawer; shelves place it at several heights, including eye level. That can suit households that open the freezer frequently, store many small packages, or prefer to see categories arranged on separate shelves.

The same division makes each compartment relatively narrow. A large serving platter, pizza box, roasting pan, or wide leftover container may not fit without turning it sideways, removing a shelf, or using the door. Check the usable shelf width in the manufacturer’s specification or in-store display. Exterior width alone cannot tell you whether a particular dish will fit.

Fresh food is also arranged vertically, so some refrigerator items are at eye level while others are below. Door bins add accessible storage, but their depth and spacing differ by model.

French door: a wide, high fresh-food zone

A French-door refrigerator places the fresh-food section above a lower freezer drawer. Opening both upper doors exposes a broad shelf area that is generally easier for platters, sheet pans, wide containers, and large produce bins. The elevated refrigerator compartment can reduce bending for frequently used fresh foods.

The freezer’s convenience depends on its drawer design. A single deep bin can hide packages beneath the top layer; two drawers, sliding shelves, dividers, and pull-out baskets can make the same nominal capacity much easier to manage. Inspect the actual arrangement and check whether the drawer can be opened fully without hitting an island or adjacent cabinet.

Because the refrigerator doors are split, you can open one side for a small item rather than exposing the entire fresh-food compartment. The benefit depends on hinge swing and the location of the item you need; it is not a guarantee of lower energy use.

Capacity: compare the split, not only the headline number

Two refrigerators with the same advertised total capacity can feel very different. A side-by-side often allocates space more evenly between refrigerator and freezer, while a French-door model commonly assigns more volume to fresh food. The right split depends on what you buy, not on the total cubic-foot figure.

Questions for a fresh-food-heavy household

  • Do you regularly store wide platters, large meal-prep containers, cakes, or multiple beverage bottles?
  • Do you buy bulky produce, deli trays, or prepared foods that need horizontal shelf width?
  • Would an elevated refrigerator compartment reduce bending and make contents easier to see?

Frequent “yes” answers favor a French-door interior, provided the freezer drawer has enough usable baskets and the room allows its travel.

Questions for a freezer-heavy household

  • Do you keep many small frozen packages that are easier to sort on separate shelves?
  • Do you want frozen food visible at eye level instead of stacked in a low drawer?
  • Will the narrow side-by-side freezer still accept your largest frozen boxes and containers?

These habits favor a side-by-side layout when its narrower shelves accommodate the packages you buy.

Measure real items

Before comparing capacity numbers, measure the width and height of the largest routinely stored dish, tray, carton, and frozen package. Ask the retailer or manufacturer for shelf, bin, and drawer dimensions when they are not listed. “Usable” storage is reduced by shelves, ice makers, lighting housings, and drawer hardware, so a larger advertised cabinet is not automatically more practical.

Dimensions and clearance: the installation must fit, not just the cabinet

Category ranges are useful for planning but cannot substitute for an installation drawing. Maytag lists typical side-by-side dimensions of about 30–40 inches wide, 68–72 inches high, and 23–32 inches deep; with doors fully open, depth can reach about 45 inches. Its typical French-door ranges are about 30–36 inches wide, 67–70 inches high, and 29–35 inches deep.

A separate SureFit Dimensions guide, updated June 2026, gives overlapping ranges: French-door models at approximately 33–36 inches wide, 68–70 inches high, and 29–36 inches deep; side-by-side models at approximately 32–36 inches wide, 66–71 inches high, and 29–35 inches deep. The difference between these published ranges shows why category averages cannot prove that a refrigerator will fit your opening.

Measure the opening

  1. Measure width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening. Record the narrowest measurement.
  2. Measure height from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction, including cabinets, trim, and overhead molding.
  3. Measure depth from the wall to the front edge of the counter or surrounding cabinetry. Note whether the measurement includes doors and handles.
  4. Check the manufacturer’s required side, top, and rear ventilation gaps in the exact installation instructions.

Map the movement path

  • Measure the entry door, hallway, elevator, and turns from delivery point to kitchen.
  • Allow for hinge and handle projection when a door opens beside a wall or cabinet.
  • For a French-door model, mark the entire outward travel of the freezer drawer and confirm that an island, table, or chair will not block it.
  • For a side-by-side, confirm that each door can open far enough to remove shelves and drawers for cleaning or service.
  • Distinguish standard-depth from counter-depth versions: counter-depth units may sit closer to cabinets, but the exact capacity and clearance still come from the model specification.

Do not use the cabinet depth alone to predict how far the installed refrigerator will project. Handles, hinges, door-open requirements, and leveling adjustments can change the final position.

Features to compare model by model

Door style does not guarantee a feature. Build a checklist from the exact product specification and compare equivalent configurations.

Interior storage

  • Adjustable shelves: Check how many positions are available and whether shelves split or slide to make room for tall bottles.
  • Wide or sliding shelves: These can improve access to broad containers, especially in a French-door compartment.
  • Crisper drawers: Look for humidity controls, drawer dimensions, and whether the drawers open fully with the doors at the planned angle.
  • Door bins: Compare bin depth, gallon-bottle capacity, adjustability, and whether bins are removable for cleaning.
  • Freezer baskets and shelves: On a side-by-side, count shelf levels and inspect door-bin space. On a French-door model, check divider positions, upper and lower baskets, and whether packages can be seen without unloading the drawer.

Dispensers, ice, and lighting

Water and ice dispensers may be fitted to either configuration, or omitted. Confirm whether ice is made in the door, in the freezer, or in a separate bin; each arrangement changes usable storage and service access. Check the dispenser’s height for the bottles and pitchers you use. Interior lighting placement matters as well: bright, unobstructed lighting makes a deep drawer or rear shelf easier to use.

Surfaces and finish

Spill-resistant shelves can contain leaks and simplify cleanup, but shelf edges and seals still need regular cleaning. Compare the finish for fingerprints, the location of the handles, and whether replacement shelves or bins are available. Treat these as model-level specifications rather than automatic advantages of either layout.

Cost: why a simple “premium” is misleading

Whirlpool’s comparison positions side-by-side refrigerators as typically starting at a lower price point and says French-door models may start higher. It also notes that capacity, finish, and features affect the price. That is relative positioning, not a current quote or a guaranteed difference between two particular refrigerators.

Retailer buying guides, including Lowe’s, publish broad price bands that change with promotions, inventory, region, finish, and model year. Use those figures only as general orientation. For a meaningful comparison, place models in the same range for:

  • Exterior width, depth, and height
  • Total capacity and the refrigerator/freezer split
  • Water and ice dispenser configuration
  • Finish and handle style
  • Interior shelving, drawer, and basket equipment
  • Warranty and delivery or installation charges

Compare the current delivered price, not only the advertised appliance price. A lower-priced refrigerator can become more expensive if it requires a paid water-line installation, special clearance work, or a different delivery route. Conversely, a higher-priced model may include a feature you would otherwise add through a separate appliance or accessory.

Energy use: verify the exact model

The manufacturer guidance reviewed for this comparison does not support a categorical claim that side-by-side refrigerators always use less energy or that French-door refrigerators always use more. Maytag describes the categories as comparable in efficiency and recommends looking for ENERGY STAR certification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the yellow EnergyGuide label or the product specification for the exact model. Record annual energy use and estimated annual operating cost, then apply your local electricity rate if you are calculating lifetime expense. Certification, ice-maker configuration, dispenser equipment, cabinet size, and usage can all affect the result. Do not infer operating cost from the number of doors or from the layout name.

Which layout fits common household priorities?

Priority Usually the better starting point Reason and caveat
Wide platters and meal-prep containers French door Upper shelves are generally wider; verify actual shelf width and hinge clearance.
Eye-level access to frozen food Side-by-side Vertical freezer shelves keep items at several heights; confirm that large packages fit.
Large fresh-food inventory French door More capacity is commonly assigned to the refrigerator; compare the stated split.
Many small frozen packages Side-by-side Shelf-by-shelf organization can be easier than a deep drawer; inspect shelf spacing.
Narrower individual door swings Either, often side-by-side Measure hinge and handle clearance; a French-door freezer still needs forward drawer space.
Lowest typical entry price Side-by-side Whirlpool reports a lower typical starting position, not a fixed saving for every model.
Lowest verified operating cost No automatic winner Compare EnergyGuide data and certification for the exact models.

A practical buying procedure

  1. Write down your storage pattern. Count how often you use frozen food, the largest fresh-food items you store, and whether bending to a lower drawer is acceptable.
  2. Set dimensional limits. Record the narrowest opening width, lowest height, maximum cabinet depth, door-swing space, and available freezer-drawer travel.
  3. Choose a layout shortlist. Start with French door for wide, fresh-food-heavy storage; start with side-by-side for eye-level freezer shelving or narrow individual swings.
  4. Compare capacity splits. Reject models whose refrigerator or freezer volume does not match your actual inventory, even when their total cubic-foot number looks attractive.
  5. Inspect the internal hardware. Check shelf width, shelf adjustment, crisper dimensions, door-bin spacing, freezer baskets, dividers, and ice-maker location.
  6. Verify features and installation requirements. Confirm dispenser, lighting, spill-resistant shelves, ventilation gaps, water connection, and the door-opening angle in the model documentation.
  7. Compare energy information. Note annual energy use, estimated operating cost, and ENERGY STAR status for each exact model.
  8. Compare current delivered prices. Use equivalent capacity, finish, and feature levels; include delivery, installation, haul-away, and any required accessories.
  9. Recheck the delivery path. A refrigerator that fits the kitchen opening can still fail at a hallway turn or doorway.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming “double-door” means French door

Ask the seller to state whether the freezer is a full-height vertical compartment or a lower pull-out drawer. Product titles are not always consistent, and comparing the wrong layouts leads to incorrect expectations about shelf width and freezer access.

Buying by total cubic feet alone

Total capacity hides the refrigerator/freezer split and the space consumed by shelves, ice makers, and drawer hardware. Compare the separate capacities and measure the items that matter to you.

Ignoring open-door dimensions

A cabinet can fit while the doors cannot open enough to remove drawers, or the freezer drawer can collide with an island. Use the exact installation diagram and map the full movement path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a category feature

Dispensers, adjustable shelves, humidity-controlled crispers, sliding shelves, and spill-resistant surfaces appear on selected models in both layouts. Verify the product specification instead of inferring equipment from the configuration.

Treating a typical price as a promise

Starting-price statements and retailer bands move with promotions and inventory. Compare current, similarly equipped models and include delivery-related charges.

Choosing on door count for energy savings

Door count does not establish annual consumption. Use the model’s EnergyGuide data and certification, then apply your local electricity rate if operating cost matters.

Bottom line: match the interior to your habits

French-door refrigerators are the stronger fit for households that prioritize broad, eye-level fresh-food storage and routinely keep wide dishes or containers. Side-by-side refrigerators are the stronger fit when vertical freezer shelving, eye-level access to frozen food, and narrower individual door swings matter more. Capacity, clearance, features, price, and energy performance are model-specific, so the final decision should come from the exact specification and an accurate measurement of your kitchen—not from the configuration label alone.
