The old SIA door supervisor top-up course has been replaced. For a door supervisor renewing a licence in 2026, the required qualification is the Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Refresher) in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, or the corresponding SCQF refresher award in Scotland. Refresher training has been mandatory for door supervisor renewals since 1 April 2025. You also need an accepted Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate, or equivalent, with at least 12 months remaining when your refresher course starts.
What replaced the SIA door supervisor top-up course?
The replacement is the Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Refresher). This is the qualification now used for renewing an SIA door supervision licence in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.

Scotland uses a separate qualification title at SCQF level. When booking, select the award for the nation where you will use the qualification rather than assuming that an English, Welsh or Northern Irish award automatically covers Scotland.
The former “top-up” qualification was linked to the transition to updated 2021 training. It is no longer the current renewal route. The SIA’s current guidance says top-up qualifications are not accepted for this refresher pathway.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The refresher award does not replace your original licence-linked qualification. For renewal, you must hold both the new refresher award and the door supervision qualification already linked to your licence.
When did the rule change?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1 October 2024 | The SIA introduced mandatory door supervisor refresher training. |
| 1 April 2025 | Refresher training became compulsory for door supervisor licence renewals. |
| 11 August 2026 | The SIA stopped accepting BIIAB qualifications granted on or after this date. BIIAB awards granted before the cutoff remain acceptable under the stated policy. |
These dates matter if you are comparing an older certificate with a new course. A certificate described by a provider as “top-up” is not enough by itself; check the exact award title and its award date.
Do you need refresher training to renew your licence?
You need the refresher award when you are renewing an SIA door supervisor licence under the current rules. Start by confirming that the licence is actually due for renewal and that your application is for door supervision, not a different security role.

- Your existing SIA door supervisor licence is approaching renewal.
- You still hold the original licence-linked door supervision qualification.
- You can provide an accepted EFAW certificate or equivalent with at least 12 months’ validity remaining from the first day of the refresher course.
- You are booking the qualification for the correct UK nation.

The refresher course is an additional renewal requirement. It does not convert another licence category into door supervision, and it is not a substitute for the original qualification.

First-aid requirement before the course
You must normally show evidence of an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate or an accepted equivalent when you register. The certificate must remain valid for at least 12 months from the start date of the SIA refresher training, not merely on the day you book.
What the first-aid certificate must cover
The SIA’s first-aid rules require the training to include responding to life-threatening bleeding and opening airways. Practical elements should be delivered and assessed face to face. A certificate that omits required practical content, or one that expires too soon, can prevent you from starting the refresher course.
If your certificate is close to expiry
- Calculate the date 12 months after the planned first day of refresher training.
- Compare that date with the expiry date printed on your EFAW certificate.
- If the certificate expires earlier, complete an accepted EFAW or equivalent course before registering for the refresher.
- Send the certificate to the provider during registration and ask them to confirm acceptance in writing.
Do not rely on a provider’s general statement that “first aid is required.” Ask whether your particular certificate and awarding body meet the EFAW rules, including the face-to-face practical requirement.

Which refresher qualification applies in each nation?
| Where you will use the qualification | Current refresher award | Awarding organisations listed by the SIA |
|---|---|---|
| England, Northern Ireland and Wales | Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Refresher) | BIIAB, Highfield Qualifications, Laser Learning Awards, Pearson, Qualifications Network (QNUK), and SFJ Awards |
| Scotland | SCQF-level refresher award for door supervisors | BIIAB and Highfield listed in the SIA’s May 2026 Get Licensed publication |
The SIA’s May 2026 list includes BIIAB, but the later policy cutoff takes precedence: BIIAB qualifications granted on or after 11 August 2026 are not accepted. A BIIAB certificate issued before that date remains treated differently, so check the award date rather than relying on the provider’s current advertising.

Qualification names can look similar. Before paying, ask the provider to state the complete award title, the nation it covers and the awarding organisation that will issue the certificate.
How to check that a training provider is approved
The SIA does not run refresher courses and does not directly approve, vet or receive provider fees from training companies. Approval is handled by the awarding organisation that issues the qualification.
- Use the SIA’s provider search as a starting point to find potential courses.
- Ask each provider for its exact awarding organisation and the full refresher qualification title.
- Contact that awarding organisation through its official channel and confirm that the provider is approved for the relevant award and nation.
- Ask the provider to confirm the assessment method, first-aid evidence rules, course dates and total fee in writing.
- Keep the confirmation, booking receipt and certificate details with your licence records.
A provider appearing in a search result is not, by itself, proof that it is approved for every refresher award it advertises. Approval can be qualification-specific and may change, so verify the exact course you intend to attend.

| Check | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification acceptance | Is the complete refresher award title correct for my nation? Which organisation issues it? If it is BIIAB, when was the award granted? | An old top-up or a qualification for the wrong nation may not meet the renewal requirement. |
| Provider approval | Can the awarding organisation confirm this provider is approved for this award? | The SIA does not directly approve providers. |
| First aid | Will you accept my EFAW or equivalent, and will it have 12 months left on the course start date? | Insufficient validity can stop registration. |
| Practical arrangements | What are the dates, location, delivery format, assessment arrangements and resit policy? | These details vary by provider and affect whether you can complete the course. |
| Total cost | What is included, and are certificate, assessment or resit charges separate? | There is no universal fee set out in the official guidance. |
Official material does not establish a universal course duration, fee, timetable, delivery format or assessment schedule. Treat those as provider-specific details and confirm them before booking.

Top-up certificate issued under the old route
Do not assume it will renew your licence. The current SIA training guidance no longer accepts top-up qualifications for this refresher route. Ask an awarding-organisation-approved provider to assess your documents against the current refresher award, then book the correct qualification if required.
A BIIAB certificate
Check the award date first. The SIA will not accept BIIAB qualifications granted on or after 11 August 2026. It continues to accept those granted before the cutoff under the stated policy. If the certificate is dated on or after 11 August 2026, choose a currently accepted route instead of relying on the provider’s older course description.

A certificate from another nation
Confirm that it is the award for the nation where the licence will be used. Scotland has its own SCQF refresher title, while England, Northern Ireland and Wales use the Level 2 award title. A similar-sounding certificate is not proof of cross-border acceptance.

A practical renewal process for 2026
- Check your licence. Confirm the expiry date and that you are renewing door supervision.
- Locate your original qualification. The refresher award supplements rather than replaces the qualification linked to your licence.
- Check first aid. Make sure your EFAW or accepted equivalent covers the required content and remains valid for at least 12 months from the planned course start.
- Choose the correct national award. Use the England, Northern Ireland and Wales Level 2 title or the Scotland SCQF title as appropriate.
- Verify the provider. Confirm approval with the awarding organisation, not only with the course seller.
- Check time-sensitive acceptance. For BIIAB, verify that the award date is before 11 August 2026.
- Confirm logistics and price. Get the schedule, delivery method, assessment process, total fee and any resit terms in writing.
- Complete the course and assessment. Keep the certificate and assessment records available for your licence renewal.
- Submit the renewal application. Follow the SIA’s current renewal instructions and provide any evidence requested.
Common mistakes that delay renewal
- Booking a course advertised only as “top-up.” Ask for the current refresher award title before paying.
- Ignoring the first-aid date. A certificate valid today may not have 12 months left when training begins.
- Choosing by price alone. A low fee is not useful if the provider is not approved for the required award.
- Assuming SIA listing equals approval. The awarding organisation controls provider approval.
- Overlooking the BIIAB cutoff. The issue date matters, especially for certificates granted from 11 August 2026 onward.
- Using the wrong national qualification. Check whether the licence will be used in Scotland or in England, Northern Ireland or Wales.
- Expecting a universal course format. Duration, dates, delivery and assessment arrangements are not standardised in the official material.
Why the SIA changed the renewal requirement
The SIA describes mandated entry-level training and licence integrity as important to public safety and public confidence. On 9 July 2026, Tim Archer, the SIA’s Executive Director of Licensing and Standards, said: “Protecting the integrity of the SIA licence and mandated entry-level training that SIA licensed operatives require is essential for both public safety and public trust and confidence in private security.”
That policy position explains why the current process focuses on a named refresher award, evidence of first-aid competence and checks on awarding-body approval rather than acceptance of a generic legacy top-up.
What is and is not fixed by the official rules
The required award titles, the first-aid validity rule, the provider-approval route and the BIIAB cutoff are defined policy points. The following are not universal figures in the official material:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Course duration
- Course price
- Available dates and locations
- Online, classroom or blended delivery for a particular provider
- Assessment timetable and resit charges
- Pass-rate or renewal-outcome statistics
Those details must be checked with the approved provider and, where acceptance is uncertain, with the awarding organisation before enrolment.
Bottom line for a 2026 renewal
Replace the old top-up with the current Level 2 door supervisor refresher award, or the Scotland SCQF equivalent. Enter the course with an accepted EFAW certificate that has at least 12 months remaining, verify the provider through the awarding organisation, and check the BIIAB award-date cutoff. Keep the refresher certificate alongside your original licence-linked qualification when you apply to renew.
