For a business focused on Slovenia, .si is the clearest local signal. For a company serving several European countries or an international audience, .com offers a geographically neutral identity. A qualifying business may also choose .eu to emphasize a European identity, but it does not target a particular country in Google’s geographic framework. None of these extensions guarantees search rankings or customer trust: choose according to your audience, brand, eligibility and site structure.
How .si, .com and .eu differ
| Extension | Best fit | Google’s geographic treatment | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| .si | A business whose identity and main audience are Slovenia-focused | Country-code domain (ccTLD), which is a strong signal that a site is intended for that country | Current Register.si terms, registrar process, name availability and quote |
| .com | A business serving multiple countries or an international audience | Generic top-level domain (gTLD), not tied to a particular country | Name availability, registrar terms and quote |
| .eu | A business that wants a European regional identity and meets eligibility rules | Generic regional TLD for country-targeting purposes | EURid eligibility, name availability and quote |
Google’s guidance on multi-regional and multilingual sites distinguishes country-specific ccTLDs from generic domains. That distinction makes .si the clearest country signal among these options; it does not prevent a .com site from serving Slovenian customers.

Choose according to the customers you need to reach
Choose .si for a Slovenia-first business
A .si address makes the connection to Slovenia explicit to visitors and search engines. It is a sensible fit when most customers, services or operations are centered there. Register.si, the official .si registry operated by Arnes, publishes the applicable domain terms.
Choose .com for a cross-border or international brand
.com is geographically neutral in Google’s classification. It can suit a company that expects to serve customers across several countries or does not want its web address to imply a single national market. A generic domain can still host Slovenian-language pages or country-specific sections; the address alone does not determine who the site serves.

Consider .eu if the European identity matters
.eu is a regional branding option, not a Slovenia-targeting shortcut. Google treats it as generic for country-targeting purposes, and registration is subject to EURid eligibility criteria. It may be appropriate when the business wants a European identity and qualifies to register.
How much does the extension affect search visibility?
Google describes a ccTLD as a strong signal of the country a site is intended for. A .si domain therefore gives a more explicit Slovenia signal than .com or .eu. This is a signal, not a ranking guarantee: choosing .si by itself does not ensure better positions, and choosing .com does not prevent a business from reaching Slovenian searchers.
For a site serving more than one language or country, make the page-level targeting clear. Google recommends distinct locale-specific URLs and signals such as hreflang annotations or sitemaps. Its international-site guidance describes country-specific domains, subdomains and subdirectories as possible structures, each with different maintenance and targeting trade-offs. Pick a structure your team can maintain consistently rather than relying on the extension to explain every page.
What to check before registering
Confirm the rules and eligibility
- Register.si’s terms, published and effective on 15 November 2024, specify a minimum domain length of two characters and a maximum of 63, along with rules for allowed characters and hyphens. Review the current terms before registering.
- Register.si says holders submit requests through a registrar. Its registration guidance also describes a return window conditional on the domain remaining inactive. Confirm the current process and conditions with the registry and registrar before relying on that window.
- The reviewed .si rules do not establish a general Slovenian-residency requirement. Do not assume one either way without checking the current terms. More generally, ccTLD policies vary by registry; ICANN advises registrants to consult the relevant country-code domain manager.
- EURid’s .eu eligibility rules cover qualifying organisations established in EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, and individuals who meet the published residence or citizenship criteria. Verify that the registrant qualifies before choosing .eu.
Compare the actual name and total cost
Availability and quoted prices depend on the exact name and registrar, so check them at the time you are ready to register. Do not assume one extension is always cheaper. The European Union’s domain-name guidance notes that costs vary with the registration period and associated services, such as hosting. Compare like-for-like registration and renewal prices, as well as any services bundled into the quote.
Rank #3
Keep the business in control
Register.si says the holder’s information must be accurate and current, and the holder should have direct access to the registration contact email. Where appropriate, register the domain in the business’s name, use an email account the business controls, keep contact details current and retain access to the registrar account. A domain registered through a third party can be difficult to manage if the business cannot access the account or email used for registration.

A practical decision
- Identify your main market. If the business is Slovenia-first, start with .si. If it is cross-border or international, consider .com. If a European regional identity is central and the registrant qualifies, consider .eu.
- Check whether the desired name is available with registrars for the extensions that fit your audience and brand.
- Compare current registration and renewal terms for the same period and services; include any eligibility or administrative requirements.
- Plan the site structure. For multiple locales, use clear locale-specific URLs and language or regional signals rather than expecting the top-level domain to do that work.
- Register and maintain control. Use accurate holder details and an email and registrar account the business can access.
