Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida thinks Sony and Nintendo should keep the PS5 and Switch 2 generations going for as long as possible. His reasoning is that console hardware has become more expensive, players have limited budgets, and many owners may not feel an urgent need for more power. This is his view—not an announcement or confirmed roadmap from either company.
Why does Yoshida think the current generation can last?
In an interview published by The Verge in late September 2026, Yoshida argued that rising costs could make companies less eager to introduce a new console generation soon. He said: “people have finite you know budget and it feels like PC and consoles the components very specific to these devices have increased the price.” The Vergecast transcript and VGC’s coverage report his comments.

Higher costs and finite budgets
Yoshida tied the prospect of pushing back new launches to increased component and manufacturing costs. If new hardware becomes more expensive to make, that pressure could also affect what buyers would have to pay. He did not cite a specific component-price increase or console price forecast.
His other point is affordability: people who already own a system that meets their needs may choose to keep using it rather than spend on a replacement. Yoshida put it this way: “People who have systems like PS5, Switch 2 or good enough PCs, probably will be happy to play games on them, and not necessarily consider replacing them.” VGC reported the remark.

He sees little urgent demand for more power
Yoshida also said he does not think players or developers are broadly demanding a more powerful system right now. As Nintendo Life reported, he said he did not think “lots of people are asking for ‘more power, we need more power’” or that developers were asking for better hardware.
That is Yoshida’s assessment, not a measurement of player or developer demand. Likewise, his claim that people are happy with PS5 and Switch 2 is an opinion; the cited interview does not provide a satisfaction survey.

What did he say about Xbox?
Yoshida contrasted Sony and Nintendo’s position with Xbox, which he described as trying to change the competitive landscape through new hardware and business models. In his view, Xbox’s next move is especially consequential, while Sony and Nintendo have room to continue selling their current-generation systems. VGC’s account of the interview covers that comparison.

Does this mean PS6 or Nintendo’s next console has been delayed?
No. Yoshida was offering an opinion about why Sony and Nintendo might keep the current generation running longer; neither company announced a delay in these comments. The immediate case he made was about costs and consumer affordability, not a confirmed technical cancellation or schedule change. Insider Gaming likewise notes that his statement is not an official roadmap.

For players, the practical takeaway is limited but useful: Yoshida believes PS5, Switch 2 and capable PCs can remain good-enough gaming systems for years. His comments do not establish when a successor will arrive, what it will cost, or whether every player or developer shares his view.
