There is no single right sleeping place for every dog. Let your dog’s comfort, your sleep, household health needs, and any safety or behavior concerns guide the choice: sharing your bed can work for some households, a separate bed in your room is a practical middle ground, and a crate is appropriate only when your dog is comfortable there.
How to choose where your dog sleeps
Start with what happens at night, not with a rule about where dogs “should” sleep. Does your dog settle and stay comfortable? Do you sleep well? Can your dog get on and off the sleeping surface safely? Does the arrangement create a health, hygiene, or behavior concern?

- Choose the bed if you and your dog both rest comfortably and there is no guarding, allergy, mobility, or other safety concern.
- Choose a separate surface in your room if you want your dog nearby but not on the mattress.
- Choose a crate when it serves a practical purpose and your dog has been introduced to it positively and remains relaxed inside.
Bed access is a household choice, not a dominance test. Tufts veterinary behaviorist Nicholas H. Dodman says most dogs can sleep in their owners’ beds when both prefer the arrangement. The claim that letting a dog onto the bed makes it dominant over people relies on outdated dominance framing, not a sound reason to prohibit bed-sharing. Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, “Sleeping with Dogs” (August 19, 2021).
Should my dog sleep in my bed?
Bed-sharing can be reasonable when both of you sleep well and your dog is comfortable and safe on the bed. It is not automatically harmful, but it is not the best fit for every dog or person.

When it may work
- Your dog settles without guarding the bed or a person.
- Neither of you is regularly woken by movement, snoring, or changes in sleeping position.
- Your dog can get on and off safely, or you have suitable steps or a ramp.
- Allergies, cleanliness, and parasite prevention are manageable for your household.
When to choose another surface
Keep a dog off the bed if it guards the bed or a person, or if it startles and may bite when disturbed. VCA advises withholding bed access from dogs that forcefully guard until the behavior has been addressed; ask your veterinarian about appropriate help. A dog with pain or mobility difficulty may struggle to climb, and a supportive bed at floor level can be a safer, more comfortable choice.
Consider allergies and what a dog may bring onto bedding, including dander, pollen, and dust. Fleas, ticks, and certain intestinal parasites are additional possible exposures. Talk with your dog’s veterinarian about parasite prevention. VCA also notes particular infection concerns for very young, very old, and immunocompromised people. What the sleep study found—and what it did not
A 2017 Mayo Clinic Proceedings study monitored 40 healthy adults without sleep disorders and their dogs over seven nights. Human sleep efficiency was lower when a dog was on the bed rather than in the room, with a reported difference of P=.003. The authors concluded that having a dog in the bedroom may not disrupt human sleep, while the dog’s position mattered. This small, one-week study does not establish that all dogs disrupt sleep or that bed-sharing is harmful for everyone. Its reported mean sleep-efficiency figures—81% for people and 85% for dogs—describe that study sample, not universal benchmarks. Mayo Clinic Proceedings study indexed by PubMed, “The Effect of Dogs on Human Sleep in the Home Sleep Environment” (2017).
Should my dog sleep in my room?
A separate dog bed in your bedroom is a useful compromise: your dog can sleep close to you without sharing the mattress. It can also suit a dog that prefers a cool floor or moves between sleeping spots during the night. For a dog with mobility problems, use a comfortable ground-level surface rather than requiring it to climb.

Proximity is not the same as bed-sharing. If the goal is to keep your dog nearby while protecting your sleep, personal space, or bedding, try a dog bed beside your bed and observe whether both of you settle comfortably.
Should my dog sleep in a crate?
A crate is a management tool, not a universal requirement or a cure for distress. When introduced gradually with positive reinforcement, it can provide a safe place and help with house-training, preventing unsupervised destructive behavior, travel, hospitalization, or emergencies. Some dogs do not tolerate confinement. Do not make a crate the default sleeping place for a dog showing significant distress.

Set up a crate that fits and suits your dog
Your dog should be able to stand without ducking, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Cornell identifies size, material, and durability as the main selection factors. Choose based on your dog’s size and chewing behavior as well as how and where the crate will be used.
- Wire: Often foldable and may include a divider. A divider can let a puppy use a larger crate sized for its expected adult size while keeping the usable area appropriate as it grows.
- Plastic: Has solid walls but can be cumbersome to store.
- Fabric or mesh: May work for some travel or short-term uses, but may not withstand a puppy or a dog that chews.
A cover is optional; Cornell advises leaving one or two sides open. A crate in the bedroom is one location to consider for a dog that is comfortable crated and whose people want it nearby. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Riney Canine Health Center, “Dog crates: When to use them and how to pick one” (accessed October 7, 2026).

Introduce the crate positively
- Make the crate inviting with treats, toys, and bedding, and build up your dog’s comfort gradually.
- Meet your dog’s exercise and elimination needs before and after time in the crate.
- Do not use the crate as punishment or confine your dog for extended periods without opportunities to move and meet its needs.
- Watch your dog’s response rather than assuming it will become comfortable with time.
If your dog cannot relax in a crate, consider a pen, dog run, small room, or safely barricaded area instead. VCA Animal Hospitals, “How to Crate Train Your Dog” (edited July 22, 2019).

Change the plan if your dog seems uncomfortable or the arrangement is unsafe. Confinement distress can include excessive barking or other vocalizing, pacing, panting, eliminating, drooling, panic, crate destruction, or self-injury. Cornell says a dog showing excessive stress when confined or left alone should not be forced to remain crated alone. Persistent distress warrants a conversation with your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional.
Sleeping in a human bed should not be treated as a cause of separation anxiety, and a crate should not be treated as its cure. For dogs that panic, resist entering, destroy the crate, or injure themselves, the American Animal Hospital Association’s case guidance describes alternatives such as a pet sitter, home day care, or hospital boarding for observation and protection. American Animal Hospital Association, “Sample case: canine separation anxiety” (May 10, 2019).
