Use Google Ads AI only as a controlled test, not an automatic upgrade. AI Max for Search can broaden query matching and tailor ad text or landing pages, while Performance Max can generate text and images for asset groups. Both can save production time, but neither comes with a guaranteed conversion lift. Your decision should depend on how much control you need over queries, copy, destinations, bidding, and policy review.
Google’s current documentation describes intended capabilities rather than an independently verified performance advantage. Start with a measurable experiment when your conversion goals and bidding setup provide reliable signals, then inspect search terms, assets, landing pages, and business outcomes before expanding use.

What Google Ads AI includes
Two different products are often grouped under the phrase Google Ads AI. They should be evaluated separately.
AI Max for Search campaigns
AI Max combines search-term matching with asset optimization in a standard Search campaign. Search-term matching uses broad-match, asset-based, and landing-page-based technology to find additional queries. Asset optimization includes text customization (formerly called automatically created assets) and final URL expansion. Google also documents controls for location-of-interest targeting, brand inclusions and exclusions, URL inclusions and exclusions, and negative keywords. See Google’s explanation of how AI Max works.

Generative assets in Performance Max
Performance Max has a separate tool that can generate text and images for an asset group. You can review and select suggested assets during campaign creation, but availability depends on eligibility and may vary by account. The documented generative-asset workflow is currently described for the United States at Google’s Performance Max help page. Generative assets are not the same feature as AI Max for Search.
What AI Max changes in a Search campaign
AI Max can alter three parts of delivery: which queries qualify, which text combinations appear, and which page receives a click.
Broader search-term matching
The system can match a query using campaign keywords, ad assets, and relevant content on your landing pages. This is intended to find additional demand and improve relevance, but Google does not publish a universal percentage increase in conversions, revenue, or efficiency. Actual value depends on your account’s query mix, conversion tracking, offer, and bidding signals.

Text customization
When enabled, Google generates candidate headlines and descriptions for responsive search ads. It uses context such as your domain, landing pages, existing ads, and ad-group keywords. You can preview examples and provide text guidelines, including excluded terms or other restrictions. Review every claim, qualifier, trademark reference, and tone choice before allowing a generated asset to serve. Details are in About text customization in Search campaigns.
Final URL expansion
Final URL expansion can select a page on your domain that appears more relevant to a query instead of always sending traffic to the URL entered in the ad. Text customization is required for final URL expansion. This flexibility can help when a site has strong, well-organized product or service pages, but it reduces certainty about the destination for each impression.
Controls you retain
AI Max is not a single blind automation switch. Google documents several campaign and ad-group controls, although their interactions matter.
- Brand inclusions and exclusions: define whether branded demand is included or excluded according to the campaign configuration.
- URL inclusions and exclusions: limit or prevent use of particular site sections when URL-based expansion is active.
- Location-of-interest targeting: target people showing interest in a location, subject to the campaign’s location settings.
- Negative keywords: block known irrelevant or unsafe queries. Google’s FAQ says AI Max respects negative keywords; review match behavior and search-term reports rather than assuming every unwanted variation is covered.
- Text guidelines: provide restrictions for generated headlines and descriptions.
- Reporting and exclusions: inspect search terms, assets, and landing pages, then exclude unsuitable queries or destinations.

Why advertisers consider it
Potentially more relevant reach
AI Max can use additional signals from queries, ads, and landing pages to discover demand that a tightly curated keyword list misses. This is most useful when the business can serve several closely related intents and has landing pages that clearly explain each offer. It is less attractive when a query must map to one tightly controlled message or regulated destination.
Faster creative iteration
Text customization supplies draft headlines and descriptions that a team can evaluate instead of writing every variation from scratch. The time saving is a production benefit, not proof that the generated copy will outperform expert-written copy.
Destination flexibility
Final URL expansion can route different queries to different pages on the same domain. A large site with accurate navigation and strong page-level conversion paths may benefit; a site with outdated, duplicate, or low-quality pages may send visitors somewhere unhelpful.
More diagnostic data
AI Max reporting exposes search terms, keyword relationships, asset combinations, and landing pages. These views let you identify irrelevant demand, remove unsuitable generated assets, and exclude pages that do not support the campaign objective. Google describes the available reports in About reporting in AI Max for Search campaigns.

Eligible accounts can run an AI Max experiment against a control campaign before applying settings broadly. A controlled comparison is preferable to changing every campaign at once because it preserves a reference point for conversion volume, value, cost, and lead quality.
Important limits and interactions
Final URL expansion can override pinned-copy expectations
If expansion chooses another relevant page, pinned responsive-search-ad assets may not be respected. Google also says pinning is not respected when URL inclusions are supplied. If a legal disclaimer, offer wording, or brand phrase must remain in a fixed position, check these settings together and test the actual combinations before launch.
Turning off AI Max disables its feature set
Google says switching AI Max off disables all AI Max features; its FAQ gives brand exclusions as an example of a setting that is disabled. After changing the main toggle, recheck campaign settings instead of assuming individual controls remain active.

Manual CPC prevents AI Max search-term matching
Google states that Search Term Matching does not work with Manual CPC and relies on automated bidding signals. This is a documented compatibility limitation, not a blanket instruction to change bidding. Change bidding only when your conversion data, budget, and business constraints support that decision.

Generated assets are not automatically safe or approved
For Performance Max, Google says generated or suggested assets are not guaranteed to be approved under Ads Policy. It instructs advertisers to verify accuracy, avoid misleading content, and check policy and legal compliance. Google also warns that generated-image tools can produce inaccurate or offensive material. Human review is therefore part of the workflow, not an optional polish step.
Experiments are not available for every campaign
The AI Max experiment flow excludes some configurations, including campaigns with shared budgets, portfolio bidding strategies, or active experiments. Eligibility can vary, so confirm the experiment option in the account before designing a test around it. See About AI Max experiments.
How to decide whether AI Max fits your campaign
- Define the business outcome. Confirm the conversion actions, value rules, lead-quality feedback, and attribution window that bidding will use. If the primary goal is not measured reliably, more automated matching can simply produce more poorly evaluated traffic.
- List non-negotiable controls. Record brand exclusions, URL boundaries, negative-keyword requirements, location rules, and any pinned copy that must appear. Treat these as acceptance criteria for the test.
- Audit the site. Check that pages are current, indexable, accurate, and clearly aligned with the services or products advertised. Final URL expansion can expose weak pages that were previously hidden from paid traffic.
- Confirm bidding compatibility. If the campaign uses Manual CPC, AI Max search-term matching will not operate. For automated bidding, verify that conversion signals are sufficient for the chosen strategy rather than changing bids solely to enable AI Max.
- Start with a limited test. Use the experiment workflow when the campaign is eligible. Keep budget, geography, audience settings, and conversion definitions stable enough to make the treatment and control comparable.
- Preview and review assets. Inspect generated headlines, descriptions, images, claims, prices, dates, and destinations. Remove anything inaccurate, off-brand, discriminatory, or legally risky before it can serve.
- Monitor reports and business quality. Review search terms, asset combinations, landing pages, conversions, conversion value, cost, and downstream lead quality. Do not judge the feature on click-through rate alone.
What to monitor after launch
Google recommends waiting at least two weeks after enabling AI Max before making changes such as adding negative keywords. Treat that as Google’s setup guidance, not a universal statistical rule: a high-spend campaign may collect evidence quickly, while a low-volume campaign may need longer.
- Query intent: classify new searches as valuable, ambiguous, irrelevant, or prohibited.
- Destination quality: check that expanded URLs answer the query, load correctly, and preserve analytics and consent behavior.
- Asset safety: verify factual claims, required disclosures, spelling, tone, and policy status.
- Conversion quality: compare qualified leads or completed transactions, not just form fills or visits.
- Spend distribution: look for unexpected concentration in branded, low-margin, or weakly converting areas.
- Exclusion effectiveness: confirm that negative keywords, URL exclusions, and brand settings are producing the intended boundaries.
AI Max versus a conventional Search setup
| Decision factor | Conventional controls | AI Max for Search |
|---|---|---|
| Query discovery | Primarily the keyword and match-type structure you build | Broader search-term matching using keyword, asset, and landing-page signals |
| Ad copy | Assets supplied and edited by your team | Supplied assets plus optional text customization that generates candidates |
| Landing page | Usually the final URL selected in the ad | Optional final URL expansion can select another relevant page on the domain |
| Brand and URL boundaries | Configured through standard campaign controls | Brand inclusions/exclusions and URL inclusions/exclusions are available, with interactions to verify |
| Pinned RSA assets | More predictable when expansion features are off | Pinning may not be respected with final URL expansion or URL inclusions |
| Manual CPC | Supported as a bidding choice | Search Term Matching does not work with Manual CPC |
| Evidence of performance | Use the campaign’s own reports and history | Use reports and, when eligible, an AI Max experiment; no universal lift is established |
Performance Max generated assets: a separate risk review
When creating a Performance Max asset group, generated text and images can provide starting options. Review them in the creation flow and treat each as untrusted content until checked against the source page and legal requirements.

- Check names, logos, people, locations, and before-and-after representations for permission and accuracy.
Policy and legal checks
- Verify restricted-category rules, disclosure requirements, trademark use, and local advertising law.
- Do not assume that Google’s generation step means an asset has passed review; Google explicitly says approval is not guaranteed.
- Keep a record of who approved each asset and when, especially for regulated or sensitive offers.
A dated capacity change worth knowing
Google’s April 9, 2025 Google Ads and Commerce Blog announcement says the campaign-level negative-keyword limit for Performance Max increased from 100 to 10,000. That is a product-capacity figure, not evidence that campaigns will perform better. Read the announcement at More goals and image controls coming to Performance Max.
Common failure modes and fixes
Traffic rises but qualified conversions fall
Segment the new search terms and landing pages, then exclude irrelevant intent and weak destinations. Check lead-quality or revenue data before deciding whether broader reach is worthwhile.
Required copy disappears
Review text customization, final URL expansion, URL inclusions, and pinning together. If fixed copy is essential, disable the conflicting expansion setting or keep the campaign structure that provides the required control.
Brand traffic or competitor queries consume budget
Use the documented brand inclusion or exclusion controls and negative keywords, then verify the result in search-term reporting. Turning off AI Max may also disable related AI Max settings, so recheck the campaign after any toggle change.
Generated image or text is rejected
Replace it with a verified asset, correct the claim or depiction, and check the relevant Ads Policy and legal requirements. Do not repeatedly resubmit materially inaccurate content.
The experiment option is missing
Check for shared budgets, portfolio bidding strategies, or another active experiment. If the campaign is ineligible, use a carefully matched before-and-after analysis with stable conversion definitions, clearly labeling the result as observational rather than randomized.
Verdict
AI Max for Search is worth a measured trial when you want broader query discovery, can tolerate less deterministic copy and destination selection, and have reliable conversion signals plus time to inspect reports. Keep it off when pinned assets, fixed landing pages, or strict query boundaries are more important than incremental reach.
Performance Max generative assets can accelerate drafting, but they should be treated as suggestions requiring factual, policy, brand, and legal review. Google’s materials establish available controls and workflows, not a guaranteed return. The safest operating model is a limited experiment, explicit exclusions, human approval, and decisions based on qualified business outcomes.
