Choose an equal-weight S&P 500 ETF if you deliberately want less dependence on the index’s largest companies and are comfortable with quarterly rebalancing, different sector weights, and potentially higher fees. Choose a market-cap-weighted ETF if you want the conventional, low-cost S&P 500 exposure and accept that the biggest companies will drive more of your results. Neither structure is automatically better. The right choice depends on how much concentration, size, value, momentum, cost, and tax complexity you want in your portfolio.
What the two ETF structures actually own
Both approaches can hold the same 500 companies. The difference is how much of each company the index assigns to the fund.

Market-cap weighting follows company size
The standard S&P 500 is float-adjusted market-cap weighted. A company’s weight reflects its market value and the shares available for public trading. As a result, the largest constituents receive the largest allocations, and their price movements have the greatest effect on the index. S&P Dow Jones Indices says the benchmark contains 500 leading companies and represents approximately 80% of available U.S. market capitalization. See the S&P 500 index description for the provider’s methodology and current facts.

If one constituent grows much faster than the rest, its weight rises without an equal-weight fund needing to sell anything. A market-cap ETF therefore lets winners become larger portions of the portfolio. That is a faithful way to own the market as currently valued, but it also means the fund can become top-heavy when a small group of companies dominates total market value.

Equal weighting resets every constituent to the same target
The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index uses the same constituent list but assigns each stock approximately 0.2% at each quarterly rebalance. The ETF tracking the index makes the trades needed to bring holdings back toward those targets. S&P Dow Jones Indices describes it as “the equal-weight version of the widely-used S&P 500.” Its Equal Weight Index FAQ explains the rebalance process.
Equal weighting does not turn the portfolio into a small-cap fund or remove U.S. large-cap risk. Every holding is still an S&P 500 company. It simply gives a much larger relative allocation to the index’s smaller constituents and a much smaller allocation to its giants.
How the portfolio experience differs
| Decision axis | Equal-weight S&P 500 ETF | Market-cap-weighted S&P 500 ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Initial target | Approximately 0.2% for each constituent after a quarterly reset | Weight varies with float-adjusted market capitalization |
| Concentration | Less exposure to the largest companies | Largest companies have the greatest influence |
| Company-size exposure | Greater relative weight in smaller S&P 500 constituents | More weight in companies that have grown to the largest market values |
| Sector exposure | Can differ materially from the market-cap index | Sector weights reflect constituent market values |
| Style tendencies | Quarterly selling of relative winners and buying of relative laggards creates value and anti-momentum tendencies | No equal-weight reset; exposure follows market values |
| Rebalancing | Quarterly reset toward equal weights | The index is reviewed quarterly, while constituent weights remain market-cap based |
| Fees | Can be higher | Often lower, although the current fund must be checked |
Concentration and diversification are different questions
An equal-weight fund reduces concentration in the biggest names, but that is not the same as guaranteeing better diversification. It still holds one country’s large-cap equities, and all constituents can fall together during a broad U.S. stock-market decline. The benefit is narrower: fewer portfolio dollars depend on the performance of the largest handful of companies.

A market-cap fund can look less diversified by company count even while it accurately represents the market’s aggregate value. If your other accounts already contain substantial positions in the largest U.S. technology or consumer companies, an equal-weight allocation may reduce duplication. If you deliberately want those companies to represent their current economic value, the market-cap structure may be preferable.
Sector weights can change the outcome
Equal weighting is applied to companies, not necessarily to sectors. A sector containing many S&P 500 constituents can receive a larger aggregate allocation than it receives in a market-cap index, while a sector dominated by a few very large firms can receive less. Sector leadership can therefore make one structure outperform the other even when the underlying company list is identical.
Before switching, compare the fund’s current sector breakdown with your complete portfolio. An equal-weight ETF can unintentionally increase exposure to industries in which you already own many individual stocks or sector funds.

Quarterly rebalancing creates value and anti-momentum tilts
At each reset, stocks that have risen relative to their peers are trimmed back toward 0.2%, while stocks that have lagged receive additional purchases. This systematic “sell some winners, buy some laggards” behavior is why S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the index as having value-leaning and anti-momentum tendencies. Those are recurring exposures, not promises of superior returns.
The trades also create implementation costs inside the fund. The effect on your personal tax bill depends on the account, fund distributions, local rules, and your transactions; there is no universal tax advantage established for either weighting method.
Fees and fund implementation matter
The index choice is only part of the decision. Two funds following similar benchmarks can produce different investor results because of expense ratios, tracking difference, bid-ask spreads, securities lending, fund structure, and trading conditions.

| Example fund | Structure | Reported expense figure | Date and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) | Equal-weight S&P 500 exposure | 0.20% total expense ratio | Invesco page data sourced June 30, 2025; verify the current prospectus before investing |
| iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) | Market-cap-weighted S&P 500 exposure | 0.03% expense ratio | Displayed page snapshot with NAV dated September 28, 2026; verify the current prospectus and share class |
Those figures are dated examples, not permanent prices. A difference of 0.17 percentage points is meaningful over long periods, but the cheapest fund is not automatically the best fit if its structure gives you unwanted concentration or if its tracking is poor. Check the latest prospectus, annual report, spread during your normal trading hours, assets, and tracking difference.

Relative returns depend on the market regime. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the equal-weight index beat the standard S&P 500 by about 7% in 2022, attributing the result to its value and anti-momentum tilts. That was one calendar-year outcome, not evidence of a permanent premium or a forecast for the next year.
Equal weighting can benefit when previously smaller or cheaper constituents catch up with market leaders. It can lag when a narrow group of very large companies drives the market higher and continues to expand its market values. A market-cap fund can therefore outperform for extended periods during concentrated leadership, while an equal-weight fund can benefit when performance broadens.
Best Value
When reading long-term charts, check whether figures before an index’s live launch are hypothetical back-tests. S&P Dow Jones Indices warns that pre-launch data can be subject to hindsight, survivor, and look-ahead bias. Treat those numbers as illustrations of a methodology, not as results an investor could necessarily have earned. Its Equal Weight Indices information describes these limitations.
Choose based on the exposure you want
An equal-weight ETF may fit when:
- You want to reduce the portfolio impact of the largest S&P 500 companies.
- You accept greater relative exposure to smaller companies inside the index.
- You understand and want the value and anti-momentum tendencies created by quarterly resets.
- Your existing holdings are already concentrated in the biggest U.S. companies.
- You can tolerate a potentially higher expense ratio and the possibility of lagging during narrow mega-cap rallies.
A market-cap-weighted ETF may fit when:
- You want the conventional S&P 500 exposure used as a broad U.S. large-cap core.
- You prioritize a low stated expense ratio and simple implementation.
- You are comfortable with the largest companies becoming larger portions of the fund after strong performance.
- You do not want an intentional value, anti-momentum, or smaller-constituent tilt.
- You prefer fewer forced trades beyond the index’s normal maintenance.
These are portfolio-design considerations, not individualized investment advice. Your time horizon, risk capacity, other accounts, and need for withdrawals should determine how much U.S. large-cap equity you hold in total.
A practical comparison process before buying
- Map your current exposures. List every U.S. equity fund and major individual holding across taxable, retirement, and workplace accounts. Identify how much of your total portfolio already depends on the largest S&P 500 constituents.
- Compare the live holdings. Review each candidate’s top-10 weights, sector allocations, number of holdings, and recent turnover. Do not assume two funds with “S&P 500” in their names have the same concentration.
- Check current documents. Read the latest prospectus for the expense ratio, index methodology, rebalance schedule, securities-lending policy, distributions, and risks. The dated examples above must be replaced with current figures when you place an order.
- Estimate the tracking cost. Compare the fund’s return with its benchmark after expenses over several periods. A low expense ratio can be offset by trading costs or persistent tracking difference.
- Review trading mechanics. Check the bid-ask spread and average volume during the session in which you expect to trade. Use limit orders when appropriate, particularly for a large order or an unusual market session.
- Assess taxes and account type. In a taxable account, review the fund’s distribution history and your own gains before selling an existing position. In a retirement account, tax treatment differs, but withdrawals and local rules still matter. Ask a qualified tax professional about your circumstances.
- Write a rebalancing rule. Decide in advance whether the ETF is a permanent allocation or a tilt you will review annually. Avoid switching solely because one structure led over the most recent quarter or year.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling equal weight “more diversified” without qualification. It lowers company concentration but remains a U.S. large-cap equity portfolio with correlated holdings.
- Expecting a guaranteed size or value premium. The equal-weight process creates those tendencies; it does not ensure higher returns.
- Using the 2022 result as a forecast. The reported approximately 7% advantage was specific to that year’s conditions.
- Comparing undated fees. Expense ratios change. Record the date, share class, currency, and jurisdiction for every figure.
- Ignoring sector drift. A company-equalized portfolio can make sector bets that are not obvious from the fund name.
- Assuming rebalancing is free. The fund bears trading and implementation costs, which can show up as tracking difference even when the headline expense ratio is low.
- Mixing benchmark and fund results. An index’s return is not the same as an investor’s return after expenses, spreads, taxes, and purchase timing.
Bottom line
Use an equal-weight S&P 500 ETF when reducing mega-cap concentration and accepting a quarterly value/anti-momentum tilt is worth the possible fee and tracking trade-offs. Use a market-cap-weighted ETF when you want straightforward, generally low-cost exposure to the S&P 500 as the market currently values it. Compare the current prospectuses, holdings, sectors, tracking difference, trading costs, and your existing exposures before deciding; the weighting method should serve your portfolio plan rather than a recent performance headline.
