Upgrade now if your PC is currently limited by memory, failing hardware, or a time-sensitive workload. Wait if the computer still does what you need and the upgrade is optional. Do not delay a necessary purchase solely on the hope that RAM prices will fall. TrendForce’s latest cited outlook, published September 30, 2026, forecasts higher conventional DRAM contract prices in the fourth quarter and warns that PC memory supply could tighten in 2027. Those are market forecasts, not promises about the retail price of a compatible kit in your country.

The practical decision is local and specific: identify the bottleneck, verify which memory your system supports, compare today’s complete upgrade cost with the value of using the PC while you wait, and set a date or price threshold for reassessment.

What the latest memory-price forecasts actually say

Several 2026 forecasts point to continued component-cost pressure, but none establishes a universal “buy now” date for consumers. The most recent cited forecast is more useful than older projections, yet it still describes the contract market rather than the checkout price of a particular RAM kit.

TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook

TrendForce projected conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. It also projected NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter. The firm said suppliers were continuing to prioritize advanced-process capacity for server products, leaving the overall market undersupplied.

For PCs, TrendForce said original-equipment manufacturers were continuing procurement because they expected tight supply in 2027. It also said PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as manufacturing capacity shifts toward server applications. This suggests that waiting specifically for a broad, guaranteed memory-price collapse is a risky assumption.

Earlier TrendForce forecasts show volatility, not a retail timetable

On July 3, 2026, TrendForce forecast conventional DRAM contract prices up 13–18% quarter over quarter in 3Q26 and NAND Flash up 10–15%. That release described pressure from capacity reallocation and said higher component costs were expected to flow into retail notebook prices.

On February 2, 2026, TrendForce had forecast a much sharper 90–95% quarter-over-quarter increase in conventional DRAM contract prices for 1Q26, with PC DRAM prices expected to rise by more than 100% quarter over quarter. Those were forecasts made at that time, not measurements of the retail price actually paid for a consumer memory kit. The large differences between quarterly projections show why a forecast should inform a decision, not replace one.

Gartner’s broader 2026 estimates

Gartner estimated on February 26, 2026 that combined DRAM and SSD prices could surge 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025 levels. It also projected PC prices to rise 17% compared with 2025, worldwide PC shipments to fall 10.4% in 2026 compared with 2025, and PC lifetimes to increase by 15% for business buyers and 20% for consumers by the end of 2026.

Gartner Senior Director Analyst Ranjit Atwal described the outlook this way: “This is the steepest contraction in device shipments witnessed in over a decade. Higher prices will narrow the range of devices available, prompting buyers to hold on to devices for longer, fundamentally altering upgrade cycles.” That statement and the numbers are Gartner’s February forecasts, not settled year-end results.

Source and date Forecast How to use it
TrendForce, September 30, 2026 Conventional DRAM contract prices +10–15% QoQ in 4Q26; NAND Flash +15–20% QoQ; possible PC DRAM supply decline in 2027 Most current cited direction; does not predict your local retail price
TrendForce, July 3, 2026 Conventional DRAM +13–18% QoQ and NAND Flash +10–15% QoQ in 3Q26 Shows continuing supply pressure and possible pass-through to notebook prices
TrendForce, February 2, 2026 Conventional DRAM +90–95% QoQ in 1Q26; PC DRAM expected above +100% QoQ Earlier forecast; useful for volatility context, not an observed retail result
Gartner, February 26, 2026 Combined DRAM and SSD +130% by year-end versus 2025; PC prices +17%; shipments −10.4% Broader device-market context; all figures are forecasts

Contract prices are negotiated between suppliers and large buyers. A retailer may have inventory purchased earlier, a different regional supply situation, a sale, or a margin change. Consequently, a forecasted increase can coexist with a temporary discount on a compatible kit, and a forecasted easing may never appear at the price or date you need.

Start with the reason you want to upgrade

Market direction cannot tell you whether your computer is holding you back. Classify the purchase before looking for a deal.

You have a measurable performance bottleneck

Upgrade when the current system repeatedly runs out of memory during the work you actually do: large projects, virtual machines, heavy browser sessions, photo or video editing, software development, or demanding games. A memory upgrade is most useful when storage swapping or memory pressure, rather than the processor or graphics card, is the limiting factor.

The existing hardware is unreliable

Repeated crashes, unexplained application errors, failed memory diagnostics, or a module that has stopped working make timing a reliability decision. Delaying can turn an intermittent problem into data loss or an unusable PC. Back up important files before troubleshooting or replacing components.

You need a capability the current platform cannot provide

A required operating-system feature, a workload with a firm deadline, or software that will not run acceptably can justify buying now. In this case, the cost of lost time is part of the upgrade price.

You simply hope prices will be lower

If the computer is adequate and the purchase is discretionary, waiting is reasonable. Set a review date and a maximum acceptable price rather than waiting indefinitely for a prediction to come true.

Confirm that memory is really the constraint

Do not assume every slowdown calls for RAM. Check usage while the problem is occurring.

(Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).
  1. Reproduce the workload. Open the applications, files, game or virtual machines that normally cause trouble.
  2. Observe memory pressure. In Windows, open Task Manager and watch the Memory section while switching between the affected tasks. On macOS, Activity Monitor shows memory pressure; on Linux, tools such as free -h show used and available memory.
  3. Record symptoms. Application crashes, out-of-memory messages, aggressive disk activity while multitasking, and severe slowdowns when memory use approaches the installed capacity are evidence that capacity may be limiting.
  4. Check other components. A nearly full storage drive, thermal throttling, a saturated GPU, malware, or a weak power supply can produce similar symptoms. If memory use is modest when the slowdown occurs, RAM is unlikely to be the first fix.

MSI’s upgrade guidance recommends looking at observed RAM use and symptoms such as application crashes or out-of-memory errors. MSI is a hardware vendor, so treat its capacity recommendations as vendor guidance rather than a universal requirement for every PC.

Verify compatibility before comparing prices

A cheap kit is not a bargain if the system cannot use it. Identify the exact computer or motherboard model and check its manufacturer specification or manual before ordering.

  • Memory generation: DDR4 and DDR5 are different standards and are not interchangeable. A DDR5 kit cannot be installed in a DDR4-only board, and vice versa.
  • Form factor: Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs have different physical designs. All-in-one PCs and compact systems may use specialized or soldered memory.
  • Maximum capacity and slot count: Confirm the board’s supported total capacity and per-slot limit. A system may have fewer upgradeable slots than its total memory capacity suggests.
  • Speed and configuration: Check supported speeds, module types, and whether the system requires matched modules or has restrictions on mixing existing and new sticks.
  • Firmware and operating system: Very large capacities or newer memory modules may require a BIOS update or a 64-bit operating system. Follow the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions before changing firmware.

Only after these checks should you search for a compatible DDR4 or DDR5 desktop kit, laptop memory module, or complete system. If the platform cannot accept the capacity you need, compare the cost of a broader platform upgrade instead of forcing a RAM-only purchase.

Compare buying now with the real cost of waiting

Write down the price of the exact compatible part today, not an advertised price for a different generation or capacity. Then estimate what six or twelve months of continued use is worth to you.

Question Buy now Wait
Performance Immediate relief if memory is the bottleneck No improvement during the waiting period
Price certainty Known local price and return terms today Future retail price is unknown; contract forecasts are not guarantees
Supply risk You secure a compatible part while it is available A preferred capacity, generation or form factor may become harder to find
Useful life More productive months from the current PC Preserves cash and may allow a larger platform upgrade later
Compatibility Must verify the current platform before ordering Waiting may make a future platform change more sensible

Include installation effort, shipping, taxes, the value of your time, and the possibility that a RAM purchase will be stranded if you replace the whole computer soon. A modest kit that solves an urgent problem can be better value than a cheaper kit that arrives after you have already bought a new platform.

Use these scenarios to choose

Buy now: the PC is paging, crashing, or failing

If you have confirmed memory pressure or failing modules and the machine is important for work or study, purchase a verified compatible replacement or expansion when you can afford it. Do not base a necessary repair on a hoped-for future discount.

Buy now: a deadline makes the capacity necessary

When a project, course, client requirement or software deployment needs more memory, the benefit of having a working PC for the intervening months outweighs the possibility of a lower later price.

Wait: performance is acceptable and the upgrade is optional

If your workload runs normally, reliability is good and you are considering an upgrade mainly because prices might change, defer it. Keep monitoring the exact compatible part and reassess on a defined date.

Wait and save for a platform upgrade

A RAM-only purchase is poor value when the processor, graphics card, storage interface or motherboard is the real limit, or when the system is near the end of its useful life. Save toward the complete upgrade that addresses the bottleneck.

If you wait, make the decision measurable

  1. Choose a reassessment date. Six months is a practical interval for a discretionary upgrade; use a shorter interval if supply is already limited or a deadline is approaching.
  2. Set a price trigger. Define the maximum price for the exact capacity, generation and form factor you need. Buy when the compatible part reaches that threshold, rather than trying to identify the market’s absolute bottom.
  3. Track availability as well as price. A lower headline price is irrelevant if the required kit disappears or shipping pushes the total above your budget.
  4. Recheck the bottleneck. Your workload, software and installed memory may change while you wait. Confirm that RAM is still the right upgrade before spending.

How to buy safely when you decide to upgrade

  1. Record the current memory configuration, including capacity, number of modules and DDR generation.
  2. Use the motherboard or PC specification to confirm maximum capacity, slot limits and supported module type.
  3. Prefer a matched kit when replacing or expanding multiple modules, and avoid mixing specifications unless the manufacturer documents support.
  4. Back up important data and shut down completely before opening a desktop. For a laptop or compact PC, follow the service procedure for that exact model.
  5. After installation, confirm that the operating system reports the intended capacity and run a memory test if crashes or errors continue.

Keep the receipt and packaging until the system has been tested. If the PC still slows down after a successful memory upgrade, investigate the processor, graphics, storage, thermals and software rather than buying additional RAM automatically.

The practical verdict

There is no evidence-based universal rule to buy or wait. TrendForce’s September 2026 forecast makes waiting for a guaranteed price drop particularly uncertain: it projects 10–15% quarter-over-quarter conventional DRAM contract-price growth in 4Q26 and sees possible PC DRAM supply decline in 2027. Gartner’s February projections likewise describe a market in which higher component costs could extend replacement cycles, but they remain forecasts.

Make the decision from your PC’s observed limitation, the exact compatible upgrade available in your market today, and the value of using the machine during the delay. If the system is adequate, wait with a price trigger and review date. If memory is genuinely limiting performance, reliability or a required task, buy the compatible solution when it is available instead of treating a forecast as a promise.
