Should You Take Down Your Bird Feeder During an Avian Flu Outbreak?

Usually, no. If you feed wild songbirds and do not keep chickens, ducks, geese or other domestic poultry, current guidance does not call for taking down a feeder solely because H5N1 avian flu is circulating. Cornell Lab of Ornithology guidance says transmission to songbirds and other typical feeder visitors has been low, and Audubon experts say feeders are not currently a major risk. Keep the feeder clean and follow any local or state wildlife instructions.

If you keep domestic poultry, remove wild-bird feeders and waterers or put them where wild birds cannot reach the flock. The main documented concern is wild birds carrying virus into a poultry area, not evidence that an ordinary feeder is driving human infections.

What the current evidence says about feeders and H5N1

Avian influenza is a broad family of viruses. The concern in current outbreaks is highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), including H5N1, which has affected wild birds, domestic poultry and some mammals. A feeder can bring birds together, so the sensible question is which birds are gathering there and whether they can contact a domestic flock.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s feeder guidance describes documented transmission in songbirds and other typical feeder visitors as low compared with waterfowl and some other wild birds. A Cornell-linked summary placed songbirds and similar feeder visitors at about 3% of reported wild-bird cases at the time of that guidance. That is an approximate surveillance proportion, not a permanent infection rate: testing intensity, migration and viral behavior can change the figure.

Audubon’s expert summary similarly said feeders do not pose a major current risk for ordinary bird-feeding households, while stressing routine cleaning and attention to local and state wildlife authorities. The same summary cited USDA APHIS surveillance totaling more than 12,000 detections in wild birds since 2022. That number is a cumulative count of detected cases, not the percentage of wild birds infected and not a measurement of feeder transmission.

There is no controlled study establishing that a normal backyard feeder causes H5N1 infection in people. Taking down a feeder may reduce bird congregation, but it should not be presented as a proven way to protect household members from infection. The clearest evidence-supported benefit of removing feeders is preventing wild birds from mixing with domestic poultry.

Use this decision guide before you touch the feeder

Your situation Recommended action Why
You feed wild birds, keep no poultry, see no unusual illness, and have no local removal order Keep the feeder up, clean it routinely, and monitor official updates National guidance does not recommend removal solely because H5N1 is circulating; typical songbird transmission has been low
You keep chickens, ducks, geese, quail or other domestic poultry Remove wild-bird feeders and waterers, or move and shield them so wild birds cannot approach the flock Wild birds can carry HPAI into a poultry area through direct contact, droppings, contaminated surfaces or shared water
Your state, county or local wildlife agency has issued a feeder-specific advisory Follow that geographically specific instruction, even if it is stricter than general national guidance Local agencies may be responding to a concentration of cases or a species-specific event
You see several sick or dead birds around the feeder Stop handling the birds, keep people and pets away, and contact the relevant wildlife or animal-health authority for instructions Visible illness changes the practical risk and may require reporting or targeted precautions

When deciding, weigh five facts together: whether you own poultry, which species are visiting, whether sick or dead birds are present, what local agencies have announced, and whether you can maintain a reliable cleaning routine.

If you do not keep poultry: how to keep feeding safely

Check for a local advisory first

General guidance is a baseline, not a substitute for a local order. State wildlife departments and animal-health offices can respond to a cluster in a particular county, wetland or species. Check their current notices when an outbreak is reported nearby and again if you observe unusual mortality. If a local instruction says to remove feeders, comply for the period and area specified.

Keep the setup away from obvious contamination

Place feeders where spilled seed and droppings can be cleaned rather than accumulating. Do not position them beside a pond, poultry enclosure or other place where wild waterfowl congregate. If a feeder repeatedly attracts geese, ducks, gulls or other large wild birds, consider moving it to a location that favors the small songbirds you intend to feed.

Make cleaning a routine, not an emergency response

Clean feeders regularly, especially when wet seed, mold, droppings or a buildup of hulls is visible. A routine reduces the amount of organic material that can contaminate a surface and makes it easier to notice a sick bird. Wear disposable gloves for the job and wash your hands immediately afterward, even if the feeder appears clean.

Pause feeding when the situation changes

If multiple birds become ill or die at the feeding area, stop handling the feeder and seek instructions from your wildlife or animal-health authority before cleaning or restarting it. Do not assume that a familiar species is unaffected simply because it is a songbird; surveillance can change and any bird can be infected.

If you keep chickens or other domestic poultry

Remove the attractants

USDA APHIS advises eliminating wild-bird feeders and waterers because doing so helps reduce the chance that wild birds will mingle with a flock and transmit HPAI virus they carry. Remove seed, suet, nectar and birdbaths from the poultry area rather than leaving an empty feeder that still attracts birds. Store or dispose of feed so wild birds cannot reach it.

Separate the flock from wild birds

If a feeder must remain elsewhere on the property, put substantial distance between it and the coop or run. Use fencing, netting, covered housing and closed gates to prevent wild birds from entering poultry spaces. Keep domestic birds from sharing ground, water or feeding equipment with wild visitors. These measures are part of a broader USDA biosecurity approach; a feeder alone is not the only pathway.

Protect equipment and people moving between areas

Use poultry-dedicated footwear and clothing where practical, clean equipment before it enters the coop, and avoid carrying seed containers or tools from a wild-bird feeding area into the flock’s enclosure. Follow your state veterinarian’s or USDA APHIS’s current instructions if an outbreak is detected in your area. The rule applies to backyard flocks as well as commercial poultry: any type of bird can be infected with and spread avian influenza virus.

Know when to call for help

Sudden deaths, a sharp drop in egg production, respiratory signs, neurologic signs or unusual behavior in a flock warrant prompt contact with a veterinarian or state animal-health authority. Do not move apparently exposed birds to another property while waiting for advice.

How to clean a bird feeder during an H5N1 outbreak

The agencies cited in current guidance emphasize regular cleaning, gloves and handwashing rather than a special consumer “antiviral” product. Use a disinfectant only as its label directs; the label determines the required concentration, contact time, ventilation and whether rinsing is needed.

  1. Prepare a controlled cleaning area. Keep children and pets away. If possible, clean outdoors or in a utility area, away from food preparation and domestic poultry. Do not clean while birds are actively crowding the feeder.
  2. Put on disposable gloves. Avoid touching your face, phone, door handles or other clean objects while wearing them.
  3. Empty and disassemble the feeder. Discard wet, moldy or visibly contaminated food. Do not sweep or blow dry debris, which can create dust or splashes.
  4. Wash off organic material. Scrub ports, perches, seams, trays and the inside of the tube or hopper with detergent and water. A dedicated feeder-cleaning brush can reach narrow openings; keep it separate from kitchen utensils.
  5. Apply a suitable disinfectant according to its label. Observe the full contact time. Never mix products, and avoid spraying toward birds, people or the ground where they feed.
  6. Rinse when the label requires it and let every part dry completely. Moisture left in a feeder encourages mold and bacterial growth. Reassemble only when there is no residual cleaner that could contact seed.
  7. Replace food with a fresh, dry supply. Do not top up old seed. Clean the ground or tray area so hulls and droppings do not build up.
  8. Remove gloves safely and wash your hands. Wash with soap and water immediately after the task. If the feeder was near a poultry enclosure, change or clean footwear and clothing before entering the flock area.

There is no universal interval that fits every feeder, climate or bird density. A feeder exposed to rain, high humidity or heavy traffic needs attention more often than a dry, lightly used one. The practical trigger is visible buildup, spoiled food or an advisory from your local agency.

What to do if you find a sick or dead wild bird

Do not handle it bare-handed

Do not pick up an obviously sick or dead bird, and do not let children or pets approach it. Keep dogs and cats away from carcasses and from areas contaminated by droppings. Moving the bird can spread contamination and may interfere with agency sampling.

Report before attempting cleanup

Contact your state wildlife agency, state animal-health office or the USDA reporting line for instructions. Tell them the location, number of birds, species if known, and the signs you observed. Agencies may ask for a photograph, specific disposal method or temporary closure of the feeding area. Follow their directions rather than improvising.

Protect yourself if an authority directs you to move a bird

Use the protective equipment and disposal method the authority specifies. Keep gloves, bags and tools away from food and poultry equipment, and wash hands thoroughly afterward. If you develop illness after close contact with a sick or dead bird, tell a health-care professional about that exposure.

What taking down a feeder can and cannot accomplish

It can reduce contact with a domestic flock

For a poultry owner, removing a feeder or waterer eliminates an artificial reason for wild birds to enter the same space as chickens, ducks or geese. That is why USDA APHIS makes feeder removal part of wild-bird exclusion and biosecurity advice.

It does not sterilize a yard

Wild birds can still cross a property, perch on roofs, visit natural water and leave droppings. Removing one feeder is therefore one control measure, not a guarantee that virus cannot reach a flock.

It is not established human protection

No controlled study identified in the available guidance shows that ordinary backyard feeders drive H5N1 infections in people. If your concern is personal exposure, the evidence-based precautions are to avoid sick or dead wildlife, keep pets and children away, use gloves for cleaning, wash hands and follow public-health instructions.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Assuming all birds carry the same risk: Waterfowl and some other wild birds have shown more documented infection than typical songbirds. Identify the visitors and watch local surveillance instead of relying on a blanket label.
  • Leaving a birdbath in a poultry run: Shared water can attract wild birds. Remove it or place it where wild birds and domestic poultry cannot meet.
  • Cleaning with bare hands: Put on disposable gloves first, then wash hands after removing them.
  • Using a homemade chemical mixture: Follow one disinfectant label exactly; never mix cleaners or create sprays and dust around birds.
  • Ignoring a local order: A county-level advisory can be more specific and more current than general national guidance. Follow the local instruction.
  • Continuing to feed around repeated mortality: Stop and report unusual illness or deaths before resuming. The species pattern and local situation may have changed.
  • Overstating a surveillance number: The approximately 3% songbird figure and the more-than-12,000 wild-bird detections are dated surveillance observations, not lifetime risk estimates or proof that feeders caused infections.

How to keep your decision current

Avian-flu detections, affected species and agency recommendations are volatile. Recheck USDA APHIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and your state wildlife or animal-health agency when conditions change. Give priority to a local instruction that names your county, species or type of feeder. If no such instruction exists, the practical distinction remains straightforward: households without poultry can generally continue feeding with good hygiene, while poultry owners should prevent wild-bird access to feeders, waterers and the flock.
