Compare status, routes, targets, scoring chances and league scoring—not just the word “backup,” a favorable matchup or one recent touchdown. There is no player-specific answer without your league rules, roster, waiver options and current-week injury information.
How to decide between your backup and a waiver-wire tight end
Work through the decision in order. A backup can be the better start if he is likely to run routes and receive targets; a streamer is useful only if he is actually available and has a better expected role this week. Treat floor as a function of opportunity and ceiling as a function of scoring chances, not as a guaranteed formula.

1. Confirm who is available and expected to play
Check the latest injury report, inactive list, depth-chart changes and the usual starter’s status. A backup’s opportunity can change sharply if the starter is active, inactive or limited. Do not rely on an earlier-week assumption when lineups lock.

2. Compare routes and target opportunity
Look at expected snaps and routes, recent targets and target share, and whether the player is part of the passing plan. A route count can show involvement, but routes without targets do not establish a dependable floor; few routes and few targets make a role harder to trust. Compare both players using the same recent period and account for changes in personnel or game context.
The Week 2, 2026 NFL Fantasy article cited Mayer’s 23 routes and seven team-leading targets in Week 1 as evidence for his conditional opportunity. It also noted that Kenyon Sadiq had three targets on 12 routes, a smaller opportunity despite an early score. Those one-week figures illustrate why role and production should be assessed separately; they are not current projections.
3. Distinguish a repeatable role from a scoring spike
Recent catches, yards and fantasy points are useful context, but ask how they happened. Production supported by repeated routes and targets is more informative about expected involvement than a touchdown or unusual game script on its own. Red-zone use can raise a player’s ceiling, but touchdown access is volatile when the underlying opportunity is thin.

NFL Fantasy’s Week 4, 2026 waiver article ranked Juwan Johnson first among its waiver targets. It reported consecutive double-digit fantasy performances to open the season, followed by eight catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns in Week 3; the article said he had reached the No. 3 fantasy tight end position through Sunday. It also questioned whether Kenyon Sadiq would maintain his breakout volume. 4. Account for competition and team context
Check whether another tight end or several established receivers compete for targets, and consider the quarterback and team passing context. A player may have routes but a limited share of the offense; a red-zone role matters more when there is a realistic path to targets there. 5. Use matchup as a tiebreaker
Opponent performance against tight ends can help separate two otherwise similar options, but it cannot substitute for evidence that a player will be on the field and involved. Combine matchup with expected routes, targets and team context rather than treating a defensive ranking as a guarantee.

6. Apply your league’s scoring and roster rules
In PPR, receptions affect the comparison differently than in standard scoring; a tight-end-premium format can change it further. Check roster rules, waiver availability and whether adding a streamer costs a useful roster spot or waiver priority. Weekly advice cannot settle those trade-offs without your league’s settings.
A quick comparison checklist
For each candidate, compare the same factors before setting your lineup:
- Expected availability, snaps and routes.
- Recent target volume and share, plus whether the role appears likely to persist.
- Red-zone involvement and touchdown opportunity.
- Competition from teammates and the team’s passing context.
- Opponent matchup, used alongside role rather than in place of it.
- Your scoring format, waiver options and need for a safer floor or a higher-upside result.
Give greater weight to a role you can reasonably expect to continue than to one unusually productive game. If the evidence is unclear, the uncertainty itself matters: do not assume that a backup’s role grows unless the starter’s status or recent usage supports that expectation.
What the dated examples can—and cannot—tell you
The cited NFL Fantasy examples demonstrate how to weigh availability, routes, targets, touchdowns and competition. They do not establish who to start in a later week, a league-wide success rate or a general projection. For a live lineup choice, verify that week’s injury and inactive information and compare the players actually on your roster or waiver wire.
