The chain alternates left-hand and right-hand cutters, and each group must be filed so it cuts evenly. Sharpen all cutters facing one direction first, then reverse the saw, guide bar, or chain setup and sharpen the cutters facing the other direction.
Why both sides of the chain must be sharpened
A chainsaw chain has two alternating cutter directions. The left-hand cutters remove wood from one side of the kerf, while the right-hand cutters remove wood from the other. If one group remains dull, shorter, or filed at a different angle, the chain can cut unevenly, wander through the wood, or pull the saw toward one side.

That is why Husqvarna, STIHL, and Oregon describe sharpening as a two-stage job: complete every cutter on one side, then turn the setup and complete the cutters facing the opposite direction. Sharpening only the visible cutters on one side is not a complete chain maintenance procedure.

How to sharpen both sides
- Secure the saw and chain. Engage the chain brake and wear protective gloves. For more stable work, secure the guide bar in a suitable vice or use another fixation method that prevents the chain from moving unexpectedly.
- Identify the chain specification. Select the round file and filing guide made for the chain’s pitch and gauge. A file that is too large or too small changes the cutter profile and can prevent the guide from controlling the correct depth.
- Set the filing position. Husqvarna specifies that the file should sit at 90 degrees to the filing-guide rollers. The horizontal filing angle is commonly between 25 and 35 degrees, depending on the chain type, so follow the specification for your exact chain rather than assuming one angle fits every model.
- File the first cutter direction. Start with every other cutter—the cutters whose top plates face the same direction. Push the file smoothly away from your body through the cutter, using consistent strokes. Keep the cutter lengths and angles as even as possible.
- Reverse the setup. Turn the saw, guide bar, or chain arrangement so you can file from the opposite direction without twisting the file. The filing-guide orientation changes for left-hand and right-hand cutters.
- File the remaining cutters. Sharpen every cutter facing the opposite direction with the same file size, angle, and controlled stroke pattern. Stop when both groups have a consistent sharp edge and similar cutter lengths.
- Inspect and adjust the depth gauges. Place the matching depth-gauge tool over the chain and check the rakers in front of the cutters. If they are too high, the cutters cannot take an adequate bite; if they are filed too low, the chain can grab aggressively and vibrate. Lower them only to the height specified by the chain manufacturer.
Which way should you file left- and right-hand cutters?
File one cutter direction from one side of the bar, then turn the setup and file the opposite direction. The important point is not a universal left-versus-right hand rule; it is maintaining the guide’s intended orientation for the cutter you are working on. A guide designed for the left-hand cutters may need to be flipped or repositioned for the right-hand cutters.

Using this chainsaw blade sharpener, you just need to set the grinding angle & you can easily cycle through the chain knowing that each tooth will be sharpened precisely at the same angle & depth to a razor-sharp finish every time.
- Fast Results: This outdoor power chainsaw sharpener tool has adjustable speed settings, allowing for a clean and precise finish on each tooth of the chain. Quality bearings are used in the design of the motor which means that the cutting disc operates at a high level of stability and accuracy. This saves you time, fuel, and wear and tear on your chainsaw.
- Accuracy: A dulled chain causes the chainsaw user to lean onto the chainsaw tool and press the wood to be cut more firmly, this is not safe and will ultimately lead to an accident. Sharp Pebble electric chain saw sharpener will have your chain sharpened within few passes. This will put less pressure on the chainsaw engine, which in turn ensures that your tool will last longer.
Trying to reach both directions without reversing the setup often causes an inconsistent angle or encourages filing toward yourself. Reposition the saw or bar instead of forcing an awkward stroke.
Do you need to sharpen the rakers too?
Yes, inspect the depth gauges whenever you sharpen the cutters. The rakers control how deeply each cutter enters the wood, so cutter sharpening without depth-gauge maintenance can gradually change the chain’s cutting behavior.

Husqvarna says depth-gauge adjustment is commonly needed about every third or fifth cutter-sharpening session under normal wear, but that is only a general interval. Abrasive dirt, frequent contact with soil, heavy use, and the amount removed from the cutters can require earlier adjustment. Use the matching gauge and the chain’s specified setting rather than removing a fixed amount by guesswork.
Choosing a file or sharpening kit
Match the tool to the exact chain specification first. The useful differences between kits are whether they include the correct round file, whether the guide controls the filing angle and depth-gauge height, and whether a flat file and depth-gauge gauge are included for complete maintenance.

| STIHL 2-in-1 filing guide | Holder, two round files, flat file, and built-in guide | Sharpening cutters while checking the depth-gauge relationship in one guided tool |
| Chain-specific round file and guide | Components depend on the selected chain specification; kit contents not stated | A minimal setup when you already own a suitable flat file and depth-gauge gauge |
Do not buy by chainsaw brand alone. Confirm the chain’s pitch and gauge, then select the file diameter and guide intended for that exact chain model.
Why a chainsaw may cut crooked after sharpening
- Only one cutter direction was sharpened: the dull group is still resisting the cut.
- Left and right cutters have different lengths: the longer or sharper side removes more wood and steers the saw.
- Filing angles do not match: one side enters the wood differently from the other.
- The guide was held inconsistently: changing the file height or angle from tooth to tooth creates an uneven chain.
- Depth gauges were ignored: unequal or excessive raker height changes how aggressively individual cutters engage.
To correct the problem, inspect both cutter groups, identify the shortest or most damaged cutter, and use it as the length reference for the rest. Recheck the filing-guide orientation on each side, then inspect the depth gauges with the matching tool.

Safety checks before cutting
- Wear protective gloves while handling the chain.
- Keep the chain brake engaged or clamp the bar securely before filing.
- Use smooth strokes away from your body; never force a file through a cutter.
- Replace or repair the chain if cutters are cracked, severely damaged, or no longer have usable top-plate length.
- After sharpening, verify that the chain moves freely by hand with the brake released, while keeping gloves on and the engine off.
The practical rule to remember
Sharpening is finished only when every left-hand and right-hand cutter has been treated, the cutter lengths and angles are consistent, and the depth gauges have been checked. Complete one direction, reverse the setup, complete the other, then inspect the rakers before returning the chain to work.
