Should You Move Your AI Workloads Off CoreWeave? A Practical Decision Guide for 2026

Do not move every AI workload off CoreWeave by default. Keep workloads there when its available GPUs, integrated tooling, network and storage performance, and committed rates produce a lower measured total cost than alternatives. Diversify or migrate when you need broader regions or compliance controls, lower provider concentration, stronger bargaining power, or a demonstrably better cost and reliability profile elsewhere.

The safest decision is incremental: benchmark one portable workload, price data movement and engineering labor, validate operations on a second cloud, and expand only when production measurements support the change.

What the decision actually involves

“Move off CoreWeave” is rarely a single yes-or-no infrastructure change. An AI company may run pre-training, fine-tuning, batch inference, online inference, evaluation, data preparation and research clusters with very different requirements. A GPU price that is attractive for a long training run may be poor for latency-sensitive inference once networking, storage, idle capacity and support are included.

Evaluate each workload against the same questions:

  • Can the required GPU generation and memory be obtained when the job is scheduled?
  • What is the achieved output per dollar: tokens, samples, training steps or completed requests?
  • How much engineering work is required to reproduce the job on another provider?
  • What are the practical costs and time for moving datasets, checkpoints, images, logs and secrets?
  • Can the application meet its availability, latency, data-residency and recovery objectives?
  • Would a second provider materially reduce operational or negotiating risk?

A migration is justified by a measured improvement in those outcomes, not by a lower advertised hourly GPU rate alone.

What CoreWeave offers—and what can tie you to it

CoreWeave’s 2025 Form 10-K describes customers using its platform for AI model training, agentic AI and inference, agent development and specialized workloads. Its integrated stack includes purpose-built object and file storage with GPU-local caching, CoreWeave Kubernetes Service, Mission Control for security and observability, runtime acceleration, and SUNK (Slurm on Kubernetes) for large research clusters.

Those layers can remove substantial platform-engineering work. A team can obtain a scheduler, Kubernetes environment, storage path and monitoring rather than assembling and tuning each component independently. The trade-off is dependency: deployment manifests, storage behavior, telemetry, identity integrations, scheduler extensions and operational runbooks may contain provider-specific assumptions.

Inventory those assumptions before deciding. A workload that uses standard containers, Kubernetes APIs, Slurm and portable data formats is easier to relocate than one that relies on custom images, proprietary acceleration libraries, undocumented networking rules or a single-provider monitoring pipeline.

Measure Reported figure When reported Why it matters to a customer
Data centers 43 December 31, 2025 Indicates a multi-site footprint, but you still need to verify the regions and GPUs available to your account.
Active power More than 850 MW December 31, 2025 Shows energized capacity at that reporting date; it is not a workload-level availability commitment.
Contracted power Approximately 3.1 GW December 31, 2025 Represents planned or contracted capacity and may not be immediately usable for your model.
Remaining performance obligations $60.7 billion December 31, 2025 Signals substantial committed business; it can also indicate how much capacity is tied to long-term contracts.
Weighted-average committed-contract duration Approximately five years December 31, 2025 Long commitments can secure supply but may outlast a model, product or GPU generation.
Active power 1.5 GW CoreWeave Q2 2026 earnings release A later company-reported figure; compare its definition and date with the 2025 filing before using it for planning.
Contracted power Approximately 3.7 GW CoreWeave Q2 2026 earnings release Forward capacity can be affected by construction, equipment, power and supply-chain constraints.

CoreWeave says customers generally obtain capacity through multi-year take-or-pay contracts, while on-demand access is also available. A commitment can be valuable when utilization is predictable and GPU supply is tight. It becomes risky when demand is uncertain, a newer GPU generation changes the economics, or your contract limits the ability to shift volume.

Questions to ask about a commitment

  • Is the capacity tied to a specific GPU model, site or delivery date?
  • What happens if the model’s memory, interconnect or software requirements change?
  • Can unused capacity be exchanged for another SKU or region?
  • What service levels, credits and termination assistance apply if capacity is late or unavailable?
  • Who owns and can export your data, images, checkpoints, logs and derived artifacts?

How to compare the real cost

CoreWeave’s pricing page separates on-demand, spot and inference prices by GPU SKU. When checked in 2026, the listed NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 configuration was $42.00 per hour on demand and $10.50 per hour for the listed inference price; spot capacity was shown as unavailable for that SKU. Other Blackwell and RTX PRO configurations had different prices and availability. These are time-sensitive list prices, not a workload benchmark or a quote for your contract.

Cost component What to measure
Accelerator Equivalent GPU generation, memory, interconnect and achieved tokens, samples or steps per dollar.
Utilization Booked time versus useful compute; include queue delays, data stalls and idle replicas.
Storage Capacity, read/write throughput, request charges, snapshots, checkpoint retention and GPU-local caching behavior.
Network Inter-GPU traffic, cross-zone or cross-region transfer, private links and data egress.
Commercial terms On-demand, reserved or committed rates, minimum spend, take-or-pay exposure and support fees.
Interruption risk Spot preemption frequency, restart time, checkpoint interval and lost-compute cost.
Platform labor Engineering hours for deployment, observability, security controls, upgrades and incident response.
Migration Data staging, transfer, validation, dual running, retraining and rollback.

Calculate total cost per accepted result, not cost per GPU-hour. For training, include completed tokens or validated checkpoints. For inference, include successful requests at the required latency and error rate. Run the same code, dataset slice, precision, batch size and acceptance tests on each candidate provider. Record queue time and throughput over enough runs to expose variability.

Can you run the same Kubernetes or Slurm jobs elsewhere?

Usually, the compute job can be made portable, but “the same job” is not automatic. Container images, CUDA and driver compatibility, persistent-volume semantics, node labels, networking, identity, secrets, logging and scheduler behavior can differ even when both environments expose Kubernetes.

CoreWeave’s Q2 2026 release announced Interconnect, initially beginning with Google Cloud; SUNK Anywhere, which lets teams use SUNK across their AI-cloud portfolio; and cross-cloud LOTA with Zero Egress Migration for near-local data access and reduced data-transfer friction. These features are intended to help enterprises balance performance, reliability and cost across clouds. Confirm current availability, supported regions, contractual terms and technical limits before making them part of an architecture.

A staged portability procedure

  1. Containerize the workload. Pin the operating system, CUDA, framework and inference or training dependencies. Build the image reproducibly and store it in registries accessible to both environments.
  2. Express infrastructure as code. Define clusters, node pools, storage, networking, identities, secrets and policies in reviewable configuration rather than console-only settings.
  3. Standardize scheduling. Keep Kubernetes manifests and Slurm scripts separate from provider-specific queue names, node labels and accelerators. Document every required exception.
  4. Choose an independent checkpoint format. Test exporting and restoring checkpoints, tokenizer files, optimizer state and metadata without relying on a proprietary filesystem feature.
  5. Replicate a representative dataset. Move enough data to measure transfer time, integrity checks, permission handling and read throughput. Include the largest files and the worst-case access pattern.
  6. Recreate observability. Verify metrics, logs, traces, GPU health, cost attribution and alert routing. A job is not portable if operators cannot diagnose it elsewhere.
  7. Run acceptance tests on both clouds. Compare throughput, latency, convergence, queue time, failure recovery and output quality under the same inputs and software versions.
  8. Test rollback and deletion. Stop traffic, restore a checkpoint, revoke credentials and remove temporary copies. Record the time and any residual data or cost.

Reliability, security and counterparty checks

CoreWeave’s filings identify intense competition, power outages or shortages, supply-chain and capacity constraints, higher power costs, security incidents or service interruptions, financing needs, customer credit risk, pricing pressure and the possibility that customers choose larger established vendors. The filing describes the market as “intensely competitive and rapidly evolving.” Those are disclosed business risks, not proof that the service is unreliable; they are prompts for customer due diligence.

Request evidence before production

  • Measured availability and recovery data for the exact region, GPU class and service you will use.
  • Incident-notification timelines, maintenance practices, service-credit rules and recovery objectives.
  • Capacity-delivery dates, substitution rights and GPU-refresh plans for committed contracts.
  • Data-export procedures, egress treatment, termination assistance and deletion certificates.
  • Identity integration, audit logs, vulnerability response and compliance attestations required by your industry.
  • Financial and operational plans for power, hardware supply and expansion; treat forward-looking capacity or backlog statements as planning inputs, not guarantees.

Which alternatives should you evaluate?

CoreWeave’s SEC filing names Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM, Microsoft Azure and Oracle as general-purpose-cloud competitors, and Lambda and Crusoe as smaller AI-focused competitors. The right comparison depends on your workload and procurement constraints rather than on a universal provider ranking.

Evaluation axis Evidence to collect
Performance GPU generation, memory, interconnect, storage throughput, queue time and achieved tokens per dollar.
Economics On-demand and committed rates, spot interruption behavior, storage, egress, support and migration labor.
Portability Kubernetes and Slurm compatibility, image support, APIs, data formats, observability and rollback.
Reliability Regional redundancy, incident history, maintenance practice, service credits and recovery objectives.
Enterprise fit Identity, compliance, procurement, support coverage, geographic reach and contractual protections.
Counterparty risk Capacity delivery, financing, customer concentration and exposure to power or equipment constraints.

Do not present a provider’s published GPU rate as an apples-to-apples result. The available materials do not establish a workload-specific benchmark across these providers. Your own controlled run is the evidence needed for a migration decision.

When a two-provider strategy is worth the overhead

Keeping a second provider warm can reduce concentration risk and preserve negotiating leverage, but it creates duplicated images, policies, monitoring, skills and incident procedures. It is most defensible when an outage would threaten revenue, when regulatory or geographic requirements demand separation, when capacity is frequently constrained, or when a second provider offers a materially different GPU or pricing profile.

Choose the right level of redundancy

  • Portable standby: replicate images, infrastructure code and a recent checkpoint; run a scheduled restore test.
  • Warm capacity: maintain a small ready cluster, mirrored observability and tested traffic-switching procedures.
  • Active-active: split production traffic or training jobs continuously; use only when the operational benefit exceeds duplicated cost.

Define ownership for failover, data synchronization, DNS or routing changes, credential rotation and customer communication. A second contract without a tested recovery runbook is not meaningful resilience.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Segment workloads. Separate long training, bursty experiments, batch inference and latency-sensitive serving.
  2. Select one portable pilot. Choose a job with clear acceptance tests and limited data-transfer complexity.
  3. Measure baseline performance. Capture utilization, queue time, throughput, latency, storage and network behavior on CoreWeave.
  4. Model the full switch cost. Include transfer, egress, dual running, engineering, support, contract commitments and interruption risk.
  5. Run the same pilot elsewhere. Hold software, data, precision and acceptance criteria constant.
  6. Review operational evidence. Test failures, checkpoint restore, monitoring, access control and rollback.
  7. Negotiate with facts. Use measured cost and capacity data to seek better terms or decide that diversification pays for itself.
  8. Expand selectively. Move only workloads whose measured economics, reliability or compliance outcome is better; leave others in place.

Bottom-line decision rule

Stay on CoreWeave when its GPU access and integrated platform produce the best measured result and your contract matches the time horizon of your models. Diversify when concentration, regional coverage, compliance, capacity uncertainty or bargaining power matters more than a narrow compute-rate advantage. Move a workload only after a controlled benchmark proves that the improvement survives data-transfer, platform-labor, support and recovery costs.
