Should You Keep Mowing Your Lawn in October? A Lawn Expert Explains When to Stop

Yes—keep mowing in October while the grass is actively growing and conditions are mild. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says grass continues growing above 7°C, so an autumn cut may still be necessary. Raise the cutting height slightly from summer, remove no more than one-third of the blade, clear leaves and wait whenever frost, saturated soil or unsafe conditions make mowing damaging.

Why October mowing may still be necessary

“According to a lawn expert, gardeners need to continue mowing through October — because mild fall temperatures allow grass to keep growing,” Tom’s Guide reported in 2026. The advice reflects a condition-based approach rather than a calendar deadline: if your lawn is producing visible growth and the ground is firm enough to support a mower, leaving it uncut can create long, floppy grass before winter.

The RHS says grass continues to grow when temperatures remain above 7°C and recommends mowing when necessary during mild weather. That threshold is RHS guidance, not a universal rule for every grass species, climate or lawn style. Coastal areas, sheltered gardens and warmer regions can need later cuts than cold, exposed sites.

How to decide whether to mow this October

What you see What to do
Grass is still lengthening and the surface is dry and firm Mow as needed, using a higher autumn setting.
Frost is visible or the lawn is frozen Do not mow or walk on it; wait until it has thawed and dried.
Soil is saturated, muddy or rutted easily Postpone mowing to avoid compaction and wheel damage.
Leaves are covering the turf Remove or mulch them so they do not block light and smother the grass.
Growth has stopped and cold weather is persistent Stop mowing until spring growth resumes.

There is no reliable nationwide “last mowing date.” Growth, frost and local weather should determine the final cut.

Set a higher autumn cutting height

Use a slightly higher setting than you used in summer. For an ordinary domestic lawn, the RHS gives a spring-and-autumn target of about 4 cm. Treat that as a practical RHS reference rather than a universal specification: grass type, shade, soil, mowing frequency and the finish you want all affect the suitable height.

Never remove more than one-third of the grass height in a single pass. If the lawn has become too long, raise the deck and make a second cut several days later instead of scalping it at once. Removing more than one-third can stress the plants, leave excessive clippings and expose soil to colder, wetter conditions.

Clear leaves before they damage the lawn

Autumn leaves reduce light and can hold moisture against the turf. On a small area, rake them regularly. On a larger lawn, a battery leaf blower can make collection quicker; the RHS describes battery models as quieter, greener and better for air quality than petrol blowers.

When mulching leaves works

You can mulch a light layer of dry leaves with a mower if the machine is designed for mulching and the pieces are chopped finely enough to fall between the blades of grass. Make several shallow passes rather than trying to process a thick blanket. If shredded leaves remain visible as a mat, collect them instead. Heavy coverage should be removed, not left on the lawn for the winter.

Collecting versus mulching

  • Mulch: suitable for a thin, dry layer and a mower with a proper mulching function.
  • Collect: preferable when leaves are wet, deep, diseased, or blocking most of the turf.
  • Rake or blow first: useful when leaves have gathered in corners, around beds or along edges the mower cannot reach.

Safe October mowing technique

  1. Check the forecast and lawn surface. Wait for frost to thaw and for wet ground to dry.
  2. Remove sticks, stones and dense leaf piles before starting.
  3. Set the mower higher than its summer setting; the RHS reference for a typical domestic lawn in spring and autumn is about 4 cm.
  4. Mow only enough to remove up to one-third of the blade.
  5. Overlap passes slightly, avoid sharp turns on soft ground and stop if wheels begin to sink or leave ruts.
  6. Clear clippings from paths and inspect the mower before storing it.

Sharp blades give a cleaner cut. Dull blades tear the tips, which can leave a ragged, discoloured finish that is especially noticeable as growth slows.

When should you stop mowing for winter?

Stop when the lawn is no longer growing enough to justify cutting, or when repeated frost and wet weather make mowing unsafe. Do not schedule the final cut by a fixed date. In a mild October, more than one cut may be needed; in a colder location, the last cut may arrive earlier.

The final practical cut should leave the grass at the autumn height rather than extremely short. Cutting too low removes too much leaf area before winter and can expose the crown and soil. Conversely, leaving a long, wet canopy can encourage matting and disease. Aim for an even, moderate height and remove heavy leaf cover.

Choosing equipment for autumn jobs

For a small lawn, the RHS describes an electric lawn mower as lightweight and suitable. Corded models avoid battery charging but require safe cable management; battery models are more convenient around trees and beds but need charged batteries and storage. Compare lawn size, cutting-height range, mulching and collection options, noise, emissions, storage space and maintenance before buying.

For leaf cleanup on larger lawns, a battery leaf blower avoids petrol fumes and is generally quieter. Rakes remain inexpensive and precise for borders and small patches. Whichever tool you use, do not operate it on frozen or waterlogged turf, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wet-weather limits, blade adjustment and battery storage.

Common October mowing mistakes

  • Stopping by the calendar: October does not automatically end the mowing season.
  • Cutting too short: a low summer setting can stress grass before winter.
  • Removing half the height: apply the one-third rule and make gradual reductions.
  • Mowing frost: frozen blades and crowns can be damaged by both wheels and cutting action.
  • Ignoring leaves: a continuous leaf layer blocks light and can smother turf.
  • Working on saturated soil: mower wheels compact soil and leave ruts that persist into spring.

The practical answer

Keep mowing in October if your grass is still growing and the lawn is thawed, dry and firm. Use a slightly higher cut—about 4 cm for the ordinary domestic lawn described by the RHS—remove no more than one-third at a time, and keep leaves from forming a blanket. End mowing when growth and weather conditions, not a predetermined date, tell you the season is over.
