What an optional driver update means in Windows 11

You need a device-specific function
You may have a concrete reason to seek a driver, such as enabling a feature required by a particular component or software configuration. Match the update to the exact hardware rather than selecting every item in the list. The driver class can help narrow the choice, but it does not prove that every device in that class needs the package.
The manufacturer identifies that package as compatible
If the PC maker or component maker lists a driver for your exact model and Windows version, that compatibility information is stronger evidence than the mere presence of an item under Optional updates. Microsoft specifically advises checking the hardware manufacturer’s website when Windows Update cannot find an appropriate driver.

How to install an optional driver from Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.

- Restart the computer after installation. Microsoft says to restart even when none of the listed updates explicitly requires a restart.
Read the title before selecting the checkbox. Note the device class, any model wording and whether the entry relates to the symptom or requirement you identified. If the Optional updates page is empty, Windows is not offering a manual driver package at that time. That does not demonstrate that every driver on the computer is current, nor does it create a reason to download an unrelated package elsewhere. It simply means there is no optional driver being presented through that page at that moment.
How to judge whether a listed driver applies to your PC
Start with the device class
Microsoft said in a Windows Insider Blog post dated April 24, 2026, that it added device class information to driver-update titles. Examples described in that announcement include display, audio, battery, extension and HDC classes. Use that label as a relevance clue: a display-class entry is more likely to concern display hardware than an audio-class entry, for example. The label is not proof that the update is required or suitable for every device in that class.
The change may depend on Microsoft’s rollout and the Windows Insider channel, so the wording you see can differ from the wording shown in that announcement. Do not treat the absence of a class label as evidence that an item is irrelevant; use the other identification details and the manufacturer’s documentation.

Look for an actual reason to change the driver

Microsoft Learn describes driver distribution as either Automatic or Manual. For Windows 10 version 2004 and later, manual drivers appear under View optional updates instead of being distributed automatically during a routine Windows Update scan. The manufacturer route is not a reason to download a generic package from an unrelated site. Windows Update offers no driver

You are unsure whether a restart is needed
