Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—if the app comes from the developer’s authentic distribution channel and macOS’s checks do not report a serious problem. Apple calls the App Store the safest place to get Mac software, but legitimate apps are also distributed directly by their developers. For those downloads, Gatekeeper checks the developer’s identity, whether the code has been altered, notarization status, known malware indicators and certificate revocation before asking for your approval. Those checks reduce risk; they do not prove that an app is harmless, well-designed, private or suitable for your Mac.
What the App Store protects you from—and what direct downloads require you to do
The App Store is Apple’s preferred source because Apple applies its store review and signing processes and can remove an app if a problem is discovered. Direct distribution is not automatically unsafe. Many developers distribute software from their own websites because they need a different update system, offer utilities that do not fit the store’s rules, or provide enterprise and professional tools.

The trade-off is responsibility. With a direct download, you must establish that the website really belongs to the developer, read the warning macOS displays, and stop when the warning indicates malware, revoked authorization or tampering. Gatekeeper is a screening layer, not a verdict on the developer’s business, privacy practices, reliability or future behavior.

How Developer ID signing, notarization and Gatekeeper fit together
Developer ID identifies the signer and detects later changes
Software distributed outside the App Store can be signed with an Apple-issued Developer ID certificate. macOS uses that signature to establish that the package came from an identified developer and has not changed since it was signed. A valid signature does not mean Apple endorses the developer, has reviewed the app’s design or guarantees that the software is safe.
Notarization is an automated Apple scan
A developer can submit the software to Apple’s notary service. Apple describes that service as an automated system that scans for malicious content and code-signing issues. If the submission passes, Apple creates a notarization ticket. The developer can staple the ticket to the software, and Apple also publishes the ticket online so Gatekeeper can recognize the result when the app is first installed or opened.
Apple’s developer documentation states plainly: “Notarization of macOS software is not App Review.” Notarization therefore should be read as evidence that the submitted build passed Apple’s automated checks at that point—not as a promise that every feature is trustworthy or that the app will remain safe after a future update.

Gatekeeper makes the first-open decision
When you open a downloaded app, plug-in or installer, Gatekeeper evaluates the developer identity, notarization information and whether the item has been altered. It also checks for known malware and certificate revocation indicators, then requests user approval before the first opening. Gatekeeper works alongside other macOS protections, including XProtect; it is not the entire security model.

What “notarized by default” means in Apple’s version guidance
Apple’s user guidance says macOS Catalina (10.15) and later require notarization by default for downloaded software. Apple’s developer documentation describes narrower, category-specific rules: beginning with macOS 10.14.5, software signed with a new Developer ID certificate and new or updated kernel extensions must be notarized to run; for macOS 10.15, software built after June 1, 2019 and distributed with Developer ID must be notarized. These rules vary by software category and macOS release, so do not treat them as a claim that every executable, plug-in or installer has identical requirements.
Use this decision test before downloading
- Start with provenance. Type the developer’s known domain yourself or reach it from the developer’s verified documentation. Do not rely on a prominent sponsored result or a download button on an unrelated mirror.
- Match the product and publisher. Check that the product name, developer name, version and system requirements agree across the download page, release notes and the app’s documentation. A lookalike name or unexpected spelling is a reason to stop.
- Prefer a current build. Look for a recent release that supports your macOS version and is signed and notarized. If the developer offers an App Store build, compare the publisher identity and version rather than assuming the two packages are identical.
- Read the first warning exactly. “Cannot check for malicious software,” “developer cannot be verified,” “not notarized,” “damaged,” and “will damage your computer” do not mean the same thing.
- Consider the computer’s ownership. On a work or school Mac, ask the administrator before installing or overriding anything. Mobile-device-management policy can remove the choice or enforce an App Store-only rule.
- Check the app’s permissions and purpose. A valid signature cannot tell you whether a utility needs more access than its job requires. Decline permissions that are unrelated to the feature you intend to use.
What each macOS warning means and what to do
| Alert or symptom | What Apple says it indicates | Recommended response |
|---|---|---|
| “Apple cannot check [app] for malicious software” | macOS could not complete its usual verification for that download | Contact the developer, look for an updated version or an App Store alternative. Override only after independently verifying the source and file. |
| Developer cannot be verified / app is not notarized | macOS cannot verify that the app is free of malware | Prefer a current signed and notarized build or another app. Treat an override as an exceptional, informed decision. |
| “App will damage your computer” or similar malware warning | Known malicious content may have been detected, or the developer’s authorization may have been revoked | Do not override. Quit, remove the download and investigate through the developer’s authentic support channel or your administrator. |
| “App is damaged” or “has been modified” | The package may be corrupted, broken or changed after signing | Delete it, redownload from the authentic developer source and contact the developer if the warning persists. Do not bypass it merely to get the app running. |
| Only App Store apps are allowed | The Mac’s Security & Privacy setting is restricting sources | On an unmanaged Mac, review the source setting and the developer’s identity. A management profile may control or hide this option. |
A warning about missing verification is materially different from a warning that macOS has detected malware or revoked authorization. The first may reflect an incomplete distribution process; the second is a stop signal.
How to use “Open Anyway” safely on an unmanaged Mac
Apple documents an exception route for a user who is certain the app is trustworthy and has not been tampered with. The control appears only after you have tried to open the app once.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the downloaded app. If Gatekeeper blocks it, close the alert.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the Security section. After the failed opening attempt, macOS may show an Open Anyway button for that app.
- Select Open Anyway, review the follow-up warning and confirm only when you have checked the developer, download source and file integrity as far as the developer documents them.
macOS saves an exception for that app. This does not turn off every security feature, and it does not make an unverified program trustworthy. It records your decision to proceed with that specific item. If the button is absent, the Mac may be managed by an administrator, the policy may prohibit the app, or the warning may represent a condition that should not be bypassed.

Verification habits that reduce the chance of installing a fake
Use the developer’s own release path
Navigate to the developer’s domain directly, confirm the product page belongs to the same organization named in the documentation, and read the installation instructions. Avoid “download” buttons that lead through unrelated advertising pages or request an unexpected browser extension, profile or installer.
Compare identity and version details
Before opening the file, compare its product name, version number and developer name with the release notes. If the developer publishes checksums or a signed verification procedure, follow those instructions. A checksum can show that a file matches the publisher’s release; it does not by itself prove that the publisher is honest, so use it together with the authentic download path.
Treat unusual access requests as a separate decision
Gatekeeper’s result concerns code identity and known security indicators. It does not judge whether an app’s request for Accessibility, Full Disk Access, screen recording, microphone, camera, contacts or administrator privileges is proportionate. Grant the minimum access needed, and revisit it in System Settings > Privacy & Security if the app’s behavior changes.
Keep a recovery path
Save important files before testing unfamiliar system utilities, keep a recent backup, and know how to uninstall the app using the developer’s instructions. If a warning changes after an update, stop using the app and reassess the new build rather than assuming the earlier approval still applies.

Why notarization and signing are not guarantees
- They are point-in-time checks. A notarized build can later receive an update with different behavior; each update should come from the same verified source and be evaluated on its own.
- They do not equal human review. Apple explicitly distinguishes notarization from App Review.
- They focus on defined security signals. Known malware, certificate status and code-signing integrity are not the same as privacy quality, accessibility, stability or business ethics.
- They cannot establish your intended use. A legitimate developer tool may be appropriate for a developer and unsuitable for a child’s shared Mac or a regulated workplace.
- They do not override policy. An organization can block software even when it is correctly signed and notarized.
Apple says Gatekeeper’s checks for known malware and certificate revocation are not combined with information about Apple users or devices, are not used to learn what individuals use, and that IP addresses associated with Developer ID certificate checks are not logged. Those are Apple’s stated practices; they do not change the need to evaluate the app and its permissions.
When direct distribution is reasonable—and when to choose the App Store instead
Direct distribution is reasonable when
- the download is on the developer’s authentic domain;
- the developer identity and product details match the documentation;
- Gatekeeper reports a normal identified-developer and notarization result, or the developer clearly explains an expected limitation;
- the requested permissions fit the app’s purpose;
- you can obtain updates and support from the same trusted source.
Prefer the App Store when
- an equivalent current version is available there and you do not need a direct-distribution feature;
- you want Apple’s store review, centralized updates and removal mechanisms;
- you cannot confidently distinguish the developer’s real site from a mirror or advertisement;
- the direct download repeatedly produces an unexplained verification warning.
Do not proceed when
- macOS says the app will damage your computer or reports known malicious content;
- the package is repeatedly reported as damaged or modified after a fresh download;
- the download source is a file-sharing page, crack repository or lookalike domain;
- the app demands unrelated privileges and the developer cannot explain why;
- an administrator or school/work policy forbids the installation.
Common situations and the safest next move
A long-established utility has no App Store listing
That fact alone is not evidence of malware. Verify the developer’s domain, confirm the current release supports your macOS version, check the signature and notarization warning, and read the permissions request. If Gatekeeper presents only a missing-verification warning, contact the developer for a current build before considering an override.
The download worked yesterday but now says it is damaged
Delete the copy and redownload from the authentic source. A partial download, corruption or a change after signing can produce that warning. If a fresh copy produces the same result, stop and ask the developer; do not repeatedly force it open.

Best Value
The Open Anyway button is missing
Check that you attempted to open the app once and are looking in System Settings > Privacy & Security. If the control still does not appear, a management profile or stronger policy may be enforcing the block. Ask the administrator instead of trying to defeat the policy.
A practical checklist for every outside-the-Store install
- Authentic developer domain confirmed
- Product, publisher and version match the developer’s documentation
- Current macOS compatibility checked
- Developer ID and notarization status considered
- Exact Gatekeeper warning read, not dismissed
- No malware, revocation or tampering warning present
- Permissions are proportionate to the app’s purpose
- Backup and uninstall instructions available
- Work or school administrator consulted when applicable
- Future updates will come from the same verified source
The safest default is to use the App Store when it provides the software you need. Installing outside it is a defensible choice when provenance is clear, Gatekeeper’s checks do not raise a serious warning, and you are prepared to evaluate the developer and permissions yourself. Never treat notarization or an “Open Anyway” button as a guarantee of safety.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a notarized Mac app mean Apple approved it?
No. Apple describes notarization as an automated scan for malicious content and code-signing issues and explicitly says it is not App Review.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I bypass a warning that says an app will damage my computer?
Do not bypass that warning. Apple says it can indicate known malicious content or revoked authorization; remove the app and investigate through the developer or an administrator.
Why can’t I see Open Anyway in Privacy & Security?
The button appears after a first failed opening attempt on an unmanaged Mac. A management profile or organization policy can hide or control the setting.
