If that host loses power, crashes, or becomes unreachable, it may take both the monitored service and the notification route down. Keep the monitor—and, for critical alerts, the delivery path—outside that failure domain. ntfy can still be a good choice for self-hosted notifications; it simply should not be the sole watchdog for its own host.
Why does running ntfy on the monitored server create a blind spot?
A notification system can report a failure only if enough of its own components remain available to detect and deliver the alert. When ntfy and the service it monitors share one machine, a total host failure can disable both. The same problem can arise if the home network or power fails and the monitor, ntfy server, and internet connection all depend on that environment.

This is a shared-failure problem, not a special defect in ntfy. ntfy’s documentation describes its hosted service as “Best effort”; its terms say the hosted service does not promise guaranteed uptime or a specific SLA. Those statements concern ntfy’s hosted service, not every self-hosted setup. Self-hosting gives an operator more control, but a single self-hosted machine is still a single failure domain. Which parts of the alert path can fail?
An alert has to pass through several links: a failure must be detected, a message must be published, the notification service must be reachable, the client must receive it, and someone must notice. A successful check of one link does not establish that the whole chain works.

- Host or power failure: A monitor on the same host may stop along with the service. A UPS can mitigate some brief power interruptions, but not a host crash, a long outage, an internet failure, or a broken notification route.
- Home internet or router failure: ntfy may work locally while being unreachable from outside. A probe from an external network can detect that reachability problem; the alert still needs a path that does not rely on the failed connection.
- Proxy or WebSocket misconfiguration: A reverse proxy can prevent clients from connecting correctly. ntfy’s troubleshooting guidance covers the
behind-proxysetting and WebSocket support. It also notes that a403 Forbiddenresponse for one subscribed topic can disrupt a combined subscription request, leaving topics reconnecting. See ntfy troubleshooting. - Mobile push dependencies: Self-hosted iOS instant delivery has additional requirements. ntfy documents forwarding poll requests to an upstream server connected to APNS/FCM. Without
upstream-base-url, delivery can take hours depending on the phone’s state. If iOS displays “New message,” the phone may be unable to reach the self-hosted server to retrieve the message content. Details are in ntfy configuration and known issues. - Temporary client disconnection: A client that is offline may be able to retrieve cached messages after reconnecting, depending on the cache configuration and window. This is not a guarantee of real-time delivery.
- Unnoticed notification: Device permissions, device state, browser behavior, and human response all matter. A message being published does not prove that it appeared prominently on a device or was acted on.
What do ntfy’s health checks and message cache tell you?
Health endpoint and metrics
ntfy provides a preliminary GET /v1/health endpoint. Its documentation says to treat a non-200 response or a JSON response with healthy: false as unhealthy. This tells a checker about the service at the time of the request; it does not prove a particular phone received an alert.
ntfy can also expose Prometheus metrics for dashboards and alerts. Secure access to metrics because they may reveal sensitive information. A scrape or alert that runs only on the monitored host cannot independently report that host’s total failure. See ntfy configuration.

Container checks and cached messages
The official Docker installation example includes an optional health check against /v1/health and persistent storage for the message cache. A container check can identify an unhealthy process while its environment is operating; it is not external uptime monitoring.
ntfy’s FAQ and publishing documentation describe message caching as enabled for 12 hours by default, to help with restarts, polling, and temporary client network disruption. Disabling the cache can mean disconnected subscribers miss messages. Caching may help a client recover messages after connectivity returns, but it does not keep an unavailable server online or make that server capable of reporting its own outage. How should you arrange monitoring for a home ntfy server?
- Keep ntfy on the home server if it suits your needs, but treat it as a notification component—not its own independent watchdog. Self-hosting may be useful for privacy and control, while leaving the operator responsible for maintenance and delivery troubleshooting.
- Run an external monitor outside the home server, preferably outside the home network. Have it check a public health endpoint or another meaningful service. ntfy’s examples show integrations with Uptime Kuma and UptimeRobot; those examples establish integration, not any particular monitoring guarantee.
- Choose an alert route that survives the failure being monitored. If an outage alert goes only through the same ntfy instance that has become unreachable, it still shares the failure. For critical alerts, use a separate provider, infrastructure, or route.
- Check both service health and outside reachability. A health-endpoint check asks whether ntfy reports itself healthy. An external probe asks whether that probe can reach the endpoint. Neither proves that a person’s phone displayed and surfaced the message.
- Test a real notification end to end. Confirm that the monitor detects the condition, the alert is delivered through the intended route, the device receives it, and a person notices it. Repeat the test after changing a proxy, network, client, or push configuration.
- Use caching and power backup for the problems they can address. Preserve ntfy’s cache storage if recovery after restarts matters. A UPS may cover brief power loss when sized for the server and relevant network equipment, but it does not address network, software, or push-delivery failures.
How do you troubleshoot delayed or missing mobile notifications?
First establish where the failure occurs: server health, network reachability, client connection, push delivery, or device presentation. For a self-hosted iOS setup, check the configured base-url and upstream-base-url, confirm that the phone can reach the server, and verify proxy and WebSocket behavior. Then check notification permissions and test receipt on the actual device. A successful server-side publish is not an end-to-end delivery test.
If a client was temporarily offline, cache settings determine whether it can retrieve missed messages within the configured window. That recovery behavior should not be treated as a prompt outage alert or a substitute for an independent monitor.

Is self-hosting or hosted ntfy the better fit?
The decision is not simply hosted versus self-hosted. Consider which failure domains you need to separate, how much control and maintenance you want, and what delivery behavior your clients require.

The ntfy FAQ also gives a historical account of its hosted service running on one DigitalOcean droplet without scale-out or redundancy. That is a dated description of the hosted service at the time the FAQ was written, not a statement about every self-hosted deployment or a measured uptime percentage.
