There is no universal yes-or-no answer. A U.S.-dollar investor can use a currency-hedged international fund to reduce some exchange-rate exposure, but the hedge can also reduce gains when foreign currencies rise, add transaction costs and leave residual risk. The right choice depends first on whether the fund owns international stocks, international bonds or both, then on the fund’s stated policy and the role it plays in your overall portfolio.
Read the current prospectus before deciding. Check the benchmark, currencies and share of assets the fund intends to hedge, the instruments it uses, expenses, counterparty exposure and the risks the hedge does not address. An “international” label alone does not tell you whether a fund hedges.

What currency risk means for a U.S.-dollar investor
When an international mutual fund owns securities priced in euros, yen, pounds or other currencies, your return in dollars reflects two moving parts: the local-market value of the securities and the exchange rate between those currencies and the dollar. A foreign stock can rise in its home market while the dollar strengthens enough to reduce or even erase that gain when translated into dollars. The reverse can also happen: a weaker dollar can increase the dollar value of unchanged foreign holdings.

Exchange rates can be volatile. The SEC-filed summary prospectus for Vanguard Total International Bond ETF says currency values may be affected by interest rates, inflation, government surpluses or deficits, monetary policy and currency controls. Those forces can move independently of a company’s earnings or a bond issuer’s credit quality.

Currency exposure is not automatically a defect. Some investors want the diversification and potential return effects that come from holding assets in several currencies. Others prefer their international allocation to track the underlying stock or bond markets without as much currency variation against the dollar. Hedging is a way to change that exposure, not a way to make the investment risk-free.
How a currency hedge works
A fund generally hedges by entering contracts whose value moves opposite to the foreign-currency exposure it is trying to offset. The Vanguard Total International Bond ETF summary prospectus filed in 2026 says the fund seeks to hedge foreign-currency exposure primarily through foreign-currency exchange forwards. A forward sets an exchange rate for a future transaction; gains on the contract can offset losses caused by an adverse currency move, while losses on the contract can offset gains from a favorable move.
The objective is usually to reduce, not eliminate, currency effects. The same prospectus states: “It generally is not possible to perfectly hedge the risk posed by foreign currency exposure.” A fund may hedge only selected currencies, only a portion of its assets, or only at scheduled intervals. The contract’s timing, pricing and size may not match the fund’s actual holdings exactly.

Hedging can therefore change the pattern of returns rather than guarantee a better result. If foreign currencies fall against the dollar, an effective hedge may cushion the translation loss. If foreign currencies strengthen, the hedge can give up some of the currency-related gain. Neither outcome is a forecast; it is the mechanical trade-off of offsetting exposure.
Stocks and bonds require different starting assumptions
Do not generalize from an international bond fund to an international stock fund. Currency policy can serve a different portfolio purpose in each asset class.
| Exposure | Why currency may matter | What a hedge can change | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| International stocks | Share prices, dividends and currencies all affect dollar returns. Currency movement is one component of a volatile equity allocation. | It can reduce the currency portion of the result while leaving company, market, country and sector risks. | Does the fund intend to hedge at all? Which currencies and what portion of exposure? Is the benchmark hedged or unhedged? |
| International bonds | Currency swings can be large relative to a bond’s expected income and price movement, especially when local yields are low. | It can make the allocation behave more like a dollar-based bond holding, but interest-rate, issuer and country risks remain. | Is currency hedging a central objective? Which instruments are used, and how often are positions reset? |
| Mixed-asset funds | The stock and bond sleeves may follow different currency policies. | One sleeve can be hedged while another remains unhedged, changing the portfolio’s actual currency mix. | Read each underlying fund description rather than relying on the mixed fund’s name. |
The Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral prospectus risk disclosure dated October 31, 2025 describes currency risk for foreign equities and the effects of exchange-rate changes, along with broader foreign-market and emerging-market risks. By contrast, the SEC-filed Vanguard LifeStrategy Moderate Growth Fund summary prospectus filed in 2025 says its foreign bonds are hedged by Vanguard to minimize foreign-currency exposure while its foreign stocks retain currency exposure. That is an example of fund-level variation, not a rule for every balanced fund.

What to inspect in a fund prospectus
Use the current prospectus and the fund’s portfolio or shareholder materials. Work through these items in order:
- Identify the asset sleeve. Confirm whether the fund owns stocks, bonds, or both. A policy designed for foreign bonds may not apply to the stock portion.
- Find the benchmark. Note the index name and whether it is currency-hedged. Comparing a hedged fund with an unhedged benchmark can make normal currency differences look like manager skill or failure.
- Read the objective and strategy language. Look for “seeks to hedge,” “may hedge,” “intends to hedge,” or language saying the fund normally leaves currency exposure unhedged. “May” gives the manager discretion; it does not promise a fixed hedge ratio.
- Check the currencies and coverage. The documents should indicate which currencies are targeted and whether the fund seeks to hedge all, most or only part of the exposure. If no percentage or currency list is stated, treat the coverage as fund-specific rather than assuming a full hedge.
- Identify the instruments. Forwards are one common tool. The prospectus may also describe futures, swaps or other derivatives. Instrument choice affects liquidity, settlement and counterparty exposure.
- Review costs. Look beyond the stated expense ratio for transaction costs, bid-ask effects, collateral requirements and the effect of rolling contracts. The prospectus may describe these risks without providing a single annual currency-hedging figure.
- Read the risk section. Look for imperfect hedging, derivative risk, counterparty default, leverage, liquidity and the possibility that a hedge loses value.
- Compare the policy with your portfolio. Add the fund’s likely currency exposure to other international holdings, including workplace retirement funds and balanced funds. Two apparently different funds can leave you with the same unhedged currencies.
Hedged and unhedged outcomes in plain examples
Assume a fund owns foreign securities and the securities’ local prices do not change during a period. If the foreign currency falls 8% against the dollar, an unhedged investor would generally see a currency-related decline of roughly that magnitude before fees and other effects. A sufficiently matched hedge could offset much of that decline, but the result would be reduced by contract costs, timing differences and any portion left unhedged.
If the foreign currency instead rises 8%, the unhedged holding would generally receive a currency-related boost. A hedge designed to offset that movement would lose value and give up much of the boost. The examples isolate currency; real funds also experience price changes, income, rebalancing and expenses.

| Scenario | Unhedged fund | Hedged fund | What can prevent a perfect offset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foreign currency weakens against the dollar | Currency translation tends to reduce the dollar return. | The hedge may cushion the translation loss. | Partial coverage, contract timing, pricing differences and costs. |
| Foreign currency strengthens against the dollar | Currency translation tends to add to the dollar return. | The hedge may reduce that currency-related gain. | Same implementation differences and the cost of maintaining contracts. |
| Foreign market falls | Market loss remains, plus or minus the currency effect. | Market loss remains; a hedge addresses currency, not the security decline. | Equity, bond, country, issuer and derivative risks are separate. |
The costs and risks a hedge does not remove
The 2026 Vanguard Total International Bond ETF prospectus warns that hedging transactions can increase transaction costs and create counterparty risk. If a counterparty cannot fulfill its contractual obligation, the fund could face an additional loss. A hedge can also create collateral and liquidity demands, and derivatives may behave differently from the exposure they are intended to offset.
Currency hedging does not protect against:
- an equity-market decline or a company’s poor results;
- bond price losses caused by rising interest rates;
- issuer default, credit deterioration or missed payments;
- political, regulatory or economic events in a country or region;
- emerging-market liquidity and market-structure risks;
- sector concentration, benchmark construction or security-selection decisions; or
- the fund’s own fees, trading expenses and operational errors.
Hedging can also introduce basis risk: the contract may reference a currency amount, maturity or rate that does not line up with the fund’s holdings. A fund that rebalances daily, monthly or at another interval can have different exposure between adjustments. Prospectus language is the best place to determine how the manager handles those gaps.
When a hedge may fit your portfolio
You may value a more dollar-like bond allocation
Investors using international bonds for income, ballast or a lower-volatility part of a portfolio may prefer less currency variation. A fund that explicitly hedges its foreign bonds can better match that objective, although it still carries interest-rate, credit, country and derivative risks.
Best Value
You may want the diversification of unhedged stocks
International stocks are already a volatile growth allocation. Leaving currency exposure open can provide an additional source of diversification because foreign currencies do not always move with U.S. stocks. That benefit is not guaranteed, and an unhedged position can also increase short-term dollar volatility.
You may need consistency with an existing allocation
If another account already contains a large unhedged international-stock position, adding a hedged stock fund may reduce your portfolio’s total currency exposure. Conversely, adding an unhedged fund to a portfolio dominated by hedged foreign bonds may restore some currency diversification. Make the decision at the portfolio level, not from one fund’s label.
Your time horizon and spending currency matter
A U.S. investor expecting to spend dollars soon may be less comfortable with a large currency swing than an investor saving for a long-term goal who can tolerate interim variation. A future expense in a foreign currency changes the analysis because unhedged exposure may partially match that liability. The fund’s policy still matters; a hedge may not cover the exact currency or date of your spending need.

- Assuming “international” means unhedged. Some funds hedge, some do not, and some hedge only selected sleeves.
- Assuming “hedged” means fully protected. Coverage, timing and contract performance can leave residual exposure.
- Using a bond-fund conclusion for stocks. The desired role of currency in a bond allocation can differ from its role in equities.
- Comparing returns without matching benchmarks. A hedged index and an unhedged index measure different exposures.
- Ignoring implementation costs. Expense ratios do not necessarily show every cost of rolling and settling derivatives.
- Treating a hedge as market insurance. It targets currency movement, not losses from stocks, bonds, issuers or countries.
- Relying on an old prospectus. Policies, benchmarks and permitted instruments can change; use the current filing and shareholder documents.
A practical decision checklist
Before buying or switching an international mutual fund, write down the answer to each question:
- What job is this holding meant to do: growth, income, diversification or liability matching?
- Is the exposure international stocks, international bonds or a combination?
- What benchmark does the fund track, and is that benchmark hedged?
- Does the fund require, intend or merely permit hedging?
- Which currencies and what proportion of assets are targeted?
- Which derivatives or other instruments implement the policy?
- What transaction, counterparty, liquidity and residual currency risks are disclosed?
- How will this fund’s policy change the currency exposure of your entire portfolio?
- Can you tolerate the possibility that an unhedged currency gain disappears—or that a hedge reduces one?
If the documents do not answer a material question, contact the fund sponsor or a qualified financial professional rather than filling the gap with an assumption. The reviewed SEC filings establish that policies differ by fund and asset class; they do not establish a universal hedge ratio or a guaranteed return advantage.
Bottom line
Hedge currency risk when it serves a defined portfolio purpose, not because hedging is presumed to improve returns. For international bonds, reducing currency swings may fit an investor seeking a more stable, dollar-oriented allocation. For international stocks, retaining some unhedged exposure may support diversification, while a hedge can be reasonable when dollar volatility is a priority. In either case, the decision should follow the fund’s current prospectus, implementation details, costs and your overall exposure—not the word “international” on the label.
