Should You Have Both Ethernet and Wi‑Fi at Home?

For most homes, yes. Keep both Ethernet and Wi‑Fi available through one properly secured router. Wi‑Fi serves phones, tablets, laptops, smart-home equipment and other devices that move or are difficult to cable. Ethernet is preferable for stationary devices—such as desktop PCs, game consoles, televisions, workstations and network storage—when predictable latency, consistent connectivity or dependable local transfers matter.

They are complementary access methods, not competing internet services. Your maximum internet speed is still constrained by your broadband plan, router, switches, cabling and device capabilities.

Ethernet and Wi‑Fi solve different problems

Consideration Ethernet Wi‑Fi
Mobility Requires a cable, so it suits fixed equipment. Best for devices that move around the home.
Consistency and latency Generally more predictable for a cabled device. Can vary with signal strength, interference, congestion and placement.
Installation Needs cable runs, usable ports and sometimes a switch. Usually works wherever the router’s radio coverage reaches.
Coverage Available wherever a cable can be routed. Depends on router placement, walls, distance and radio conditions.
Security exposure A cabled link avoids wireless transmission for that device, but still depends on a secure router and endpoint. Requires correctly configured wireless encryption and radio-security settings, plus secure router and devices.

A typical home router performs both jobs: it connects to the broadband modem or service termination and provides wired LAN ports alongside a wireless network. You do not need separate internet subscriptions for the two connection types.

Which devices should use Ethernet?

Stationary, latency-sensitive equipment

Connect a desktop computer, game console, smart television, streaming box or work computer by Ethernet when a practical cable route exists. The wired link removes one source of variable radio delay and interference. This is particularly useful for real-time gaming, video calls, remote desktop sessions and large transfers between local devices.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

High-throughput local devices

Network-attached storage, a home server or a desktop that regularly moves large files can benefit from a stable wired path. Ethernet does not automatically make an internet connection faster; it can, however, make transfers within your home network more consistent when the router, ports, cable and devices support the required speed.

Devices near the router or a network switch

If a device remains in one room, a short cable is often the simplest way to avoid wireless dead spots. When the router’s built-in ports are full, an Ethernet switch can add ports, provided it is compatible with the network’s speed and power requirements.

Which devices should stay on Wi‑Fi?

Mobile personal devices

Phones, tablets and laptops need Wi‑Fi because their location changes. Wireless access also suits devices used in several rooms, where permanent cabling would be inconvenient or unsafe.

Small and hard-to-wire smart-home devices

Many sensors, cameras, speakers and appliances are designed around wireless connectivity. Place the router or additional access points to provide reliable coverage rather than assuming every device should be wired.

Temporary or flexible setups

Guest devices, short-term work areas and equipment that may be rearranged are usually easier to support wirelessly. A wired connection is not an improvement if the cable creates a trip hazard or cannot be routed securely.

Is Ethernet better than Wi‑Fi for gaming and streaming?

For a fixed gaming console or PC, Ethernet is generally the more predictable choice because Wi‑Fi conditions can change with interference, distance and other active devices. That can reduce variation in latency, but it cannot overcome a slow broadband plan, congestion outside your home or an overloaded game server.

Streaming video usually works over either connection when coverage and capacity are adequate. A wired link can help a television or streaming box that sits in a weak-signal area; otherwise, well-positioned Wi‑Fi may be sufficient. Test the actual device location before rewiring the house.

Does Ethernet improve Wi‑Fi speed?

No. Plugging one device into Ethernet does not increase the wireless capacity of the router or the speed supplied by your internet provider. It can improve that device’s own stability and may reduce wireless airtime usage if the device no longer occupies the radio link. Other Wi‑Fi clients still depend on the router’s wireless hardware, configuration, coverage and interference environment.

Is wired internet safer than Wi‑Fi?

Ethernet avoids sending the cabled device’s traffic over radio, but it is not a complete security solution. The International Telecommunication Union notes that home networks using wired or wireless transmission face threats similar to those affecting other networks. A compromised computer, insecure router or malicious device can still expose a wired connection.

The Federal Trade Commission describes a home Wi‑Fi network as a wireless router sending a signal through the air and calls the router central to Internet-of-Things privacy. Its consumer guidance recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, unique administrator and Wi‑Fi passwords, router software updates, disabling remote management, turning off WPS and UPnP when appropriate, using a guest network and keeping the router firewall enabled.

CISA similarly recommends WPA3 Personal, changing default administrator credentials and the default SSID, disabling WPS, and considering router placement and transmission power because wireless signals can extend beyond the home’s walls. NIST’s IR 8425A, published in September 2024, emphasizes router cybersecurity for homes that depend on smart-home IoT devices and remote-work equipment.

How to set up a combined home network

  1. Secure the router first. Replace default administrator credentials, install current firmware, select WPA3 Personal when all important devices support it (otherwise use WPA2 Personal), and set a unique Wi‑Fi password.
  2. Place the router thoughtfully. Position it centrally and away from major obstructions. If coverage remains poor, use compatible access points or a mesh system rather than simply increasing transmission power without considering signal leakage.
  3. Wire fixed devices. Run suitable Ethernet cables to stationary, latency-sensitive or high-transfer equipment. Secure the cable route and avoid bending or pinching the cable.
  4. Connect wireless devices. Join mobile and hard-to-wire equipment to the secured Wi‑Fi network. Put visitors and, where supported, less-trusted smart-home equipment on a guest or separate network.
  5. Disable unnecessary exposure. Turn off remote administration, WPS and UPnP when you do not need them. Keep the router firewall enabled and update every connected device.
  6. Check the result at the device. Test coverage, latency and reliability where each device is actually used. Move an access point or add a cable when the measured problem is coverage or radio interference, not the broadband service.

When a single connection type may be enough

A small apartment with mobile devices and strong coverage may function entirely on Wi‑Fi. Conversely, a wired-only network can work for a desk-based setup, but it becomes inconvenient as soon as phones, tablets, visitors or wireless appliances are added. Maintaining both gives each device the connection that fits its location and purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need separate internet service for Ethernet and Wi‑Fi?

No. A single home router normally provides both wired Ethernet ports and Wi‑Fi from the same broadband connection.

Should my TV and PC be plugged into Ethernet?

If they stay in one place and a safe cable route is available, Ethernet is often the more consistent option. Use Wi‑Fi when cabling is impractical and coverage is reliable.

Can Ethernet fix slow internet service?

Only if wireless conditions were the limiting factor for that device. Ethernet cannot raise the speed supplied by your broadband plan or remove congestion beyond your home.
