Usually, no. You do not need to clear every optional quest before a game’s final mission, but you should identify quests that affect the ending, disappear at a story checkpoint, or unlock rewards you care about. Games handle the finale differently: some restore free exploration after the credits, some return you to a pre-finale save, and some endings deliberately end access to the world.
Before entering a mission that displays a point-of-no-return warning, make a separate manual save, read exactly what the warning says, and check a current missables guide for your specific game, platform, edition, and patch. If you cannot verify the consequences, postpone the finale rather than assuming every side quest will remain available.

Why there is no universal answer
“Side quest” describes optional content, not a single technical category. One quest may be a self-contained errand that remains available indefinitely. Another may change a companion’s fate, unlock an ending route, provide an item needed for a later objective, or vanish when the story crosses a regional checkpoint. Treating all optional missions as interchangeable is the quickest way to miss content that matters to you.

The final mission also does not always mark the same kind of transition. A game can temporarily take control away from the open world, reload your pre-finale state after the credits, create a post-game exploration state, or end the protagonist’s story with no return to unfinished activities. The title of the mission is less important than the game’s save and progression rules at that moment.

Four questions determine the risk
- Quest lockout: Does starting this sequence close missions, vendors, companions, or regions?
- Ending impact: Can an optional quest alter an ending, add an ending route, or supply context that will not appear elsewhere?
- Post-game access: Will the game return you to the world, offer free roam, or deliberately stop the story?
- Recovery: If you skip something, can you restore a manual save, replay the mission, use New Game Plus, or revisit the content in another mode?
How to read a point-of-no-return warning
A warning is a signal to investigate, not a universal promise that everything becomes permanently missable. Read each sentence carefully. “You will not be able to complete certain quests” is different from “you will be unable to return to this area,” and both differ from a warning that simply says the next sequence is long.
Temporary lockout
Some finales place you in a linear mission or a restricted area. You cannot explore while the sequence is active, but the game later restores your normal world state. In that design, entering the finale may be safe for unfinished work, provided you are willing to wait until the credits or a post-mission checkpoint.
Permanent missability
Other checkpoints resolve characters, destroy locations, or advance the calendar. When that happens, an unfinished quest can disappear permanently in the current playthrough. A warning may mention this directly, but some games communicate the change through story events instead, which is why a current, game-specific guide is valuable.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An ending that closes the story
A particular ending can intentionally prevent a return to the pre-finale world. In that case, “I will do it after the ending” is not a safe assumption even if other endings allow free exploration. The only reliable answer comes from the exact ending route and checkpoint you are entering.

Choose what to finish according to your goal
You do not have to pursue a completionist standard if your priority is simply seeing the conclusion. Decide which outcomes matter, then spend your remaining time on the quests that support them.
| Player goal | Prioritize before the finale | What can usually wait | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| See the story ending soon | Quests explicitly tied to an ending, companion outcome, or required route | Unrelated errands and collectibles | Missing a scene or ending variation you would have wanted |
| Understand character arcs | Companion and faction missions, especially those with unresolved decisions | Resource-gathering tasks and repeatable activities | Character context may be absent from the finale |
| Earn a specific reward | Any quest that grants the item, ability, upgrade, or currency you need | Rewards with no use for your chosen build | Entering the finale underpowered or without a preferred tool |
| Complete the game in one run | Every quest listed as missable before the relevant checkpoint | Only content confirmed to remain available afterward | Permanent loss of a quest, region, or achievement opportunity |
| Finish quickly, then explore | Only high-impact quests and a separate manual save | Anything a post-game guide confirms can be completed later | The game may not provide the post-game state you expected |
A pre-finale checklist that works across games
- Make a separate manual save. Use a new slot rather than overwriting your normal autosave. Label it with the mission or checkpoint name so you can recognize it later.
- Read the on-screen warning in full. Do not dismiss it from memory. Note whether it mentions quests, areas, activities, a long sequence, or an inability to return.
- Inventory unfinished content. Open the quest log, map, companion menus, faction screens, and any region-specific objectives. Write down the missions you would regret losing.
- Check each important quest in a current guide. Search for the exact game, mission name, platform or edition when relevant, and current patch behavior. A general “all games” answer cannot identify your individual missables.
- Separate ending-sensitive quests from ordinary errands. Finish missions that can change an ending, unlock a route, settle a companion decision, or provide essential equipment before low-stakes activities.
- Check regional checkpoints. A late-story transition can close one zone before the advertised final mission. Confirm whether every region remains accessible through the next chapter.
- Decide where to stop. If the guide confirms post-finale access, proceed when ready. If the consequences are unclear, finish the content you value or keep the manual save and test the transition.
What different games demonstrate
The following examples show why advice must remain game-specific. They are not rules that can be transferred to every role-playing game or open-world title.
Cyberpunk 2077: a warning plus ending-sensitive missions
A guide for Cyberpunk 2077 describes an on-screen “Point of No Return” warning before the finale. It also notes that certain side missions can affect the ending, while other activities can be left undone without changing the conclusion. That means the right response is not “finish everything”; it is “identify the missions that influence the ending, then decide whether the rest is worth doing now.”
Phantom Liberty’s Tower ending: an intentional stop
CD PROJEKT RED Support gives a narrower example involving the Tower ending in Phantom Liberty. It says that returning to the Point of No Return after that ending would create “an uncanny narrative experience,” so the game allows V’s story to end and provides no rewards during that epilogue. This statement applies to that ending and epilogue, not to every ending in Cyberpunk 2077 or to other games. If you want to continue unfinished activities, make the decision before entering that route.

Final Fantasy XVI: a story checkpoint can remove earlier quests
A Final Fantasy XVI guide reports that a late-story checkpoint makes some earlier side quests unavailable, while post-story free roam and replay options preserve access to other content. The important distinction is between the quests closed by that checkpoint and the content the game intentionally leaves for after the story. Do not assume that the existence of free roam means every earlier mission survives.
Avowed: regional content can close before the finale
For Avowed, guidance recommends completing outstanding side missions in Dawnshore and Emerald Stair before entering the underground Godless Ruin during “Ancient Soil.” It also recommends saving before the Garden if you want to see the ending first and then return to unfinished quests. This is a useful pattern: the dangerous transition may occur inside a late quest, not at a mission simply labeled “final.”
Horizon Forbidden West: exploration after the final mission
A guide for Horizon Forbidden West reports that players can continue exploring and complete side quests after the final mission. In a game with that structure, postponing ordinary optional content is generally practical, although quests tied to a particular story state can still have their own conditions. Confirm the individual quest before relying on the broad post-game behavior.
How to identify the side quests worth doing first
Look for explicit ending language
Prioritize quests described as affecting the ending, unlocking an ending, determining a companion’s fate, or changing a faction’s final state. Guides may label these “ending requirements,” “branching choices,” or “missable before the finale.” Read the quest-specific instructions rather than relying on a guide’s headline.

Resolve companion and faction decisions
Unfinished companion missions often contain decisions that the final sequence assumes you have made. Faction quests can also alter who appears, which locations are friendly, or which rewards become available. If a character or faction matters to your preferred conclusion, complete its chain before the relevant checkpoint.
Do not confuse collectibles with story requirements
Collectibles, crafting materials, repeatable contracts, and optional combat challenges are usually lower priority unless you need their rewards. A guide that lists them beside ending-sensitive missions does not mean they carry equal consequences. Classify each item by story impact, reward value, and whether the guide confirms later access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Save management and recovery options
A separate save is the simplest protection against an irreversible transition, but it is not a guarantee that every game supports convenient restoration. Some titles keep multiple manual slots; others rely heavily on autosaves that may be overwritten after a major decision.
- Keep the pre-finale slot untouched. Do not use it for ordinary exploration after starting the finale.
- Use a second slot for experiments. If you want to test whether a warning is temporary, preserve the original first.
- Watch for automatic overwrites. A post-ending save can replace the only return point if you continue without checking.
- Record the exact checkpoint. Note the quest, location, and decision that created the save; this makes it easier to follow a guide later.
- Check replay systems. Mission replay, chapter select, New Game Plus, or a post-game state may restore some content, but they may not reproduce every choice or reward.
If you already started the final mission
The game still lets you leave
Back out immediately, create a manual save, and inspect the quest log for newly unavailable objectives. If the game allows fast travel or ordinary exploration, use that access to complete the high-priority missions first.
Best Value
You are locked into a long sequence
Continue only if you have confirmed that the game restores access afterward or you are comfortable postponing the remaining content. Avoid assuming that a long mission is the final mission; some games place additional checkpoints inside it.
The ending has already closed access
Check whether the title offers a post-game save, chapter replay, or New Game Plus. If none exists, your pre-finale manual save is the practical recovery route. Without such a save, a second playthrough may be the only way to see missed content.
You cannot find a reliable answer
Stop at the next safe opportunity and search for the exact mission and checkpoint in a current guide. Include the game’s edition and platform when they can affect behavior. Avoid using an old list that predates a major story expansion or a guide written for a different release.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “point of no return” means permanent loss. It may describe a temporary finale lockout, so verify what happens after the credits.
- Assuming post-game free roam restores everything. A game can preserve exploration while still removing individual quests or rewards.
- Finishing every quest without checking consequences. Some companion or faction missions can alter the ending you wanted to see.
- Overwriting the only safe save. Keep a separate slot before entering the checkpoint.
- Following a guide for the wrong version. Expansions, editions, patches, and platforms can change quest availability.
- Letting completionism delay the story indefinitely. If only ordinary errands remain and your priority is the ending, proceed with a protected save.
A practical rule for your next finale
Finish every side quest only when you are pursuing a full completion run or when a game-specific guide identifies those quests as missable or ending-sensitive. Otherwise, complete the optional missions you value, protect your progress with a separate save, and verify the exact checkpoint before starting the finale. The game’s warning and its documented post-ending behavior—not a universal rule about side quests—should determine when you move on.
