For a .com or another supported generic top-level domain (gTLD), enabling the registrar’s privacy or redaction service is usually sensible. You remain the registered name holder while substitute contact details are displayed. For a .IN domain, do not assume the same switch is permitted: .IN policy requires true, accurate registrant information and publicly displays contact data other than the billing contact. NIXI warns that proxy registrations, privacy protection or inaccurate data can lead to suspension or deletion.
The short answer for domain owners in India
Whether you should enable WHOIS protection depends first on the domain extension, not on your physical location. India-based owners of .com, .net and other gTLDs should check whether their registrar and the specific TLD support a privacy or redaction service. If supported, choose a service that leaves you as the registrant of record and supplies a functioning forwarding address for abuse reports, renewal notices and legal requests.

Owners of .IN domains should follow the .IN Registry’s publication and accuracy rules instead of trying to conceal ownership. The registry states: “Registrants must provide true, accurate contact information.” It also says: “As per standing policy, the contact data will displayed in the .IN WHOIS, except for the Billing contact data, which is not displayed.” A registrar’s generic “WHOIS privacy” toggle cannot override that registry policy.

Privacy service and proxy service are different
Registrars and hosting companies sometimes use “WHOIS privacy,” “domain privacy,” “redaction” and “proxy” as if they meant the same thing. Under ICANN’s explanation, they have materially different legal and operational effects.
| Feature | Privacy service | Proxy service |
|---|---|---|
| Registrant of record | You remain the registered name holder. | The proxy provider is listed as the registrant of record. |
| Public contact details | Alternative reliable contact information is displayed instead of some personal fields. | Provider contact information is displayed, subject to the provider’s terms and the TLD’s rules. |
| Control and legal responsibility | Your registration rights remain tied to you, while the service forwards communications. | The provider has the registrant’s formal rights and responsibilities and may have to respond to disputes or legal demands. |
| Reliability requirement | The forwarding address must work and reach you promptly. | You depend on the provider to forward notices and cooperate when required. |
| Availability | Only where the registry and registrar permit it. | Only where the registry and registrar permit it; some registries prohibit it. |
For a supported gTLD, a privacy service is generally the less disruptive choice because you remain the registrant. Before accepting it, read the registrar’s current terms: determine which fields are masked, whether the service is automatic or optional, how forwarded messages are handled, and what happens if the service is discontinued.
What .IN policy requires
Accurate data is mandatory
The .IN Registry, operated through NIXI, requires registrants to submit true and accurate contact information. Do not enter a registrar’s address, a made-up telephone number or another person’s details merely to avoid public display. The registry’s policy is about the actual registrant data, not just the text shown in a public lookup.
Most contact data is displayed
Under the standing .IN WHOIS policy, contact data is displayed publicly except for billing contact data. That means a .IN lookup can continue to show the registrant’s name, organization or address fields even when a registrar advertises privacy for other extensions. The exact screen and field labels can change as registry systems are updated, but the underlying publication rule remains the controlling requirement described by the registry.

Proxy or privacy attempts can create enforcement risk
NIXI advisories warn that inaccurate registrant information, proxy registrations and privacy protection can trigger suspension or deletion. A suspension can interrupt a website, email service, DNS records and domain transfers. Deletion can make recovery difficult or impossible once the name is released under the registry’s procedures. This is why a .IN owner should not treat a privacy toggle as a harmless experiment.
The .IN Registrar-Accreditation Agreement dated 28 April 2022 also requires registrars to maintain updated WHOIS data and accurate contact fields. Your registrar may therefore ask you to verify or correct information even after registration.
How gTLD rules limit, but do not eliminate, exposure
ICANN’s privacy and proxy guidance distinguishes the public display from the registrar’s underlying records. A privacy service can replace publicly visible personal details with reliable alternatives, but it does not erase the registration data held by the registrar. A proxy arrangement changes who is recorded as registrant and therefore changes the parties’ rights and responsibilities.
ICANN’s Registration Data Policy also provides mechanisms for publication limits and lawful disclosure requests. A court, law-enforcement agency, intellectual-property complainant or another authorized requester may be able to seek registration data through the applicable process. The exact route depends on the TLD, registrar, requester and legal basis. Consequently, domain privacy reduces casual exposure and automated harvesting; it is not a promise that your identity can never be obtained.

Decision table: which action fits your domain?
| Your situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own a .com or another gTLD and the registrar offers a privacy service that keeps you as registrant. | Enable it after reviewing the forwarding and disclosure terms. | It can limit public exposure while preserving your registration status. |
| You own a .com or another gTLD but the feature makes the provider registrant of record. | Use it only after understanding dispute, transfer and legal-notice consequences; prefer a true privacy service where available. | A proxy changes formal rights and responsibilities. |
| You own a .IN domain. | Use your real, current registrant details and do not rely on proxy or privacy protection. | .IN policy requires accurate data and displays contact data except billing information. |
| Your registrar offers one privacy switch for several extensions. | Check the extension-specific terms before activating it. | A feature valid for .com may be unavailable or non-compliant for .IN. |
| You cannot receive forwarded email or registrar notices. | Do not enable, or immediately correct, the service. | Missed verification, abuse or renewal messages can lead to suspension or loss of the domain. |
How to enable privacy safely on a supported gTLD
- Identify the extension and registry rules. Confirm whether the name is .com, another gTLD or a country-code domain such as .IN. Read the registrar’s current terms for that exact extension; do not rely on the label shown in the account dashboard.
- Confirm which service is being offered. Look for wording that says you remain the registered name holder. If the provider becomes registrant of record, treat it as a proxy service and evaluate the different legal and transfer implications.
- Read the field-level disclosure list. Establish whether the service masks your name, organization, street address, email address and telephone number, and whether any fields remain public under registry policy.
- Test the forwarding channel. Send a test message to the public contact address and verify delivery to an inbox you monitor. Check spam folders and set an alert so forwarded abuse or legal notices are not overlooked.
- Record renewal and verification procedures. Save the registrar’s instructions for changing contact data, responding to verification requests and recovering access if forwarding stops. Keep a current personal email address on the registrar account even if a public address is masked.
- Review after transfers or policy changes. Privacy status can change when a domain is transferred, when a registrar changes its service, or when registry rules are updated. Recheck the public record and account settings after each event.
What to do with a .IN domain instead
Use a real registrant identity
Register the domain in the name of the person or legal entity that actually owns it. For a company, use the company’s correct legal details and an address and telephone number that the company controls. For an individual, use accurate personal details rather than a disposable identity. Keep evidence of ownership and registrar correspondence in a secure account.
Limit exposure outside WHOIS
Because the registry can display .IN contact data, reduce risk through operational controls rather than false registration details: use a dedicated domain-management email address, restrict access to the registrar account with multi-factor authentication, and avoid publishing unnecessary personal information on the website itself. These measures do not change what the registry displays, but they can reduce the consequences of public exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMonitor the public record
Check the .IN WHOIS output after registration, a contact update, a registrar transfer or a policy change. If a field is wrong, correct it through the registrar promptly. Do not attempt to replace it with proxy data. Keep the billing contact distinction in mind: billing information is not displayed under the standing policy, while other contact data may be.

Why your .IN information is still visible
- Registry policy controls the outcome. A registrar’s privacy product cannot override the .IN Registry’s publication rule.
- The service may cover only selected extensions. Many dashboards show one control for multiple domains even though each TLD has separate rules.
- You may be seeing cached or different records. WHOIS services can update at different times. Compare the registrar’s record with the registry-authorized lookup and allow for normal propagation before assuming a malfunction.
- Billing is the exception, not a blanket redaction. The .IN policy excludes billing contact data from display but does not promise that all other fields are hidden.
If a registrar claims that privacy is active on your .IN name, ask support which registry rule authorizes the masking, which fields are hidden and whether the setting changes the registrant of record. Request the answer in writing and retain it with your domain records. If the explanation conflicts with NIXI’s published policy, use the registry rule as the safer compliance baseline.
Operational risks people overlook
Missed notices
Privacy services commonly rely on forwarding. An unreachable forwarding address can prevent you from seeing abuse complaints, transfer confirmations, verification demands or renewal reminders. A domain can remain technically active while a time-sensitive notice goes unanswered, then be suspended later.
Ownership and transfer disputes
With a privacy service, you remain the registrant, which generally makes ownership evidence and transfers more straightforward. With a proxy, the provider is the recorded registrant and may have to authorize a transfer or respond to a dispute. Read the provider’s procedure before using a proxy for a business-critical name.
False confidence
Masked public data can reduce scraping and unsolicited messages, but it does not protect a compromised registrar account, an exposed website database or an email address published elsewhere. Use strong, unique credentials, multi-factor authentication and least-privilege access in addition to any WHOIS setting.
Best Value
Stale contact records
Changing jobs, phone numbers, offices or email providers without updating the registrar account creates a compliance and recovery problem. The obligation to keep data accurate applies even when a privacy service is enabled for a supported gTLD.
Practical examples
An Indian freelancer with a .com portfolio
The freelancer can normally enable a registrar’s privacy service if the registrar and .com policy permit it. The freelancer should remain the registrant, verify the forwarding address, retain the real contact data in the registrar account and understand that lawful disclosure remains possible.
An Indian retailer using a .IN storefront
The retailer should register the legal business details, keep the company email and phone number monitored, and accept that the .IN WHOIS may display the contact data except for billing information. Entering a registrar’s substitute details to hide the owner creates the exact accuracy and enforcement risk NIXI warns about.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A startup with both .IN and .com names
Manage the domains separately. A privacy setting enabled for the .com name does not establish that the .IN name is eligible. Maintain an extension-by-extension inventory showing the registry rules, registrant identity, public fields and forwarding test date.
Bottom line for India-based registrants
Enable privacy on a supported gTLD when the service masks public contact details without taking away your status as registrant, and only after confirming that forwarding works. Do not use a proxy or substitute information to hide ownership of a .IN domain: the .IN Registry requires true, accurate data and publicly displays contact information other than billing data, while NIXI warns that privacy, proxy registration or inaccurate records can lead to suspension or deletion. For every extension, keep contact details current, monitor registrar messages and treat privacy as exposure reduction—not anonymity.
