Should You Enable Automatic Device Locking with Bluetooth Proximity?

Enable supported proximity locking as a backup if you sometimes walk away without locking your device. Keep an idle timeout and lock it manually when needed.

Usually, yes—as a backup. If you sometimes leave your computer unlocked when you walk away, enable a supported proximity-lock feature, but keep a reasonable idle-lock timeout and lock the screen yourself when you leave. Bluetooth proximity is an imperfect safety net, not a guarantee.

What Bluetooth proximity locking does—and does not do

On Windows, Dynamic Lock uses the Bluetooth signal from a paired phone. When that signal weakens beyond a threshold, Windows locks the PC if it is idle. Microsoft describes it as an additional barrier: it does not replace manually locking the computer. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lock documentation covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The signal is not a tape measure. Dynamic Lock relies on relative Bluetooth RSSI readings, which can change with the environment; a particular signal threshold does not translate to a universal distance in feet or meters. The result can be delayed or vary between rooms and setups.

When enabling it makes sense

Turn it on if you use a supported Windows PC and paired phone, and you sometimes step away without remembering to lock the screen. It can reduce the time a computer is left open to someone nearby. NIST identifies unattended, unlocked devices as a physical-access and privacy risk and lists proximity-based auto-lock among possible countermeasures: NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue, PHY-4.

  • Keep your normal idle-lock setting: Bluetooth locking only helps when its conditions are met.

  • Test the behavior in the places where you use the PC. A signal that works reliably at home may behave differently in an office or public space.

Choose the feature that matches the device and behavior

Feature What it does Important limitation
Windows Dynamic Lock Locks an idle Windows PC when the signal from its paired phone weakens past a threshold. Bluetooth signal varies by environment; the PC must be idle.
Windows 11 Lock on Leave Uses a presence sensor on supported hardware to lock when a person leaves. Requires the sensor to observe a Present-to-NotPresent transition; power requests such as video or an ongoing call can prevent locking.
Android Extend Unlock Keeps an Android phone unlocked longer in selected conditions, including connection to a trusted Bluetooth device. This is the opposite behavior from locking a PC when a phone moves away; a trusted Bluetooth connection may be imitated.

Set up Windows Dynamic Lock

  1. Pair your phone with the PC over Bluetooth in Windows Bluetooth settings.
  2. On Windows 11, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. On Windows 10, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  3. Under Dynamic lock, select the option to allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you are away.
  4. Walk away with the paired phone and check that the PC locks after the signal drops and the PC is idle. Do not assume a particular distance or delay.

Microsoft documents a default signal policy that may allow movement around an average-size office or cubicle without triggering a lock. Its RSSI values are relative, so administrators should test policy settings in each environment rather than treating a threshold as a fixed distance. For most users, the practical advice is to use the default behavior and verify it locally.

How Windows 11 Lock on Leave differs

Lock on Leave is a separate, sensor-based option for Windows 11 devices with supported presence-sensing hardware; it does not use Bluetooth phone proximity. Microsoft says the sensor must detect a transition from Present to NotPresent. If the display wakes while you are outside the sensor’s view, the system may not lock until it detects that transition again. Power requests, including video playback or an ongoing call, can also prevent locking, and a more aggressive screen timeout takes precedence. Details are in Microsoft’s Lock on Leave documentation.

Microsoft lists engineering benchmarks for this presence-sensing design: maximum leave latency under 15 seconds, average leave latency under 5 seconds across three trials, and false-positive and false-negative targets below 5%. These are design targets under the documented measurement setup—not field results and not effectiveness figures for Bluetooth Dynamic Lock.

Android’s trusted-device option is not a proximity lock

Android Extend Unlock, formerly Smart Lock, can keep a phone unlocked while it is connected to a trusted Bluetooth device such as a watch or car speaker system. It does not lock the phone when that companion device moves away. Google advises against choosing a device that is always with the phone, such as a Bluetooth keyboard or case, and warns that a Bluetooth connection could be imitated and that range varies by device and environment. See Google’s instructions for choosing when an Android phone can stay unlocked; menu steps vary by device.

NIST’s AUT-6 Android Smartlock Device Spoofing entry also describes the risk that a spoofed trusted device could keep an Android phone unlocked. Its entry cites a 2016 secondary source, so this is a threat consideration—not evidence of how often current Android implementations are exploited. It concerns a stay-unlocked feature and should not be read as evidence of a Dynamic Lock bypass.

What to do if it does not lock consistently

  • Check that it is enabled and the phone is paired. Revisit Dynamic Lock in Sign-in options and confirm the intended phone remains paired over Bluetooth.
  • Allow for idle behavior. Dynamic Lock does not lock merely because the phone moves away; the PC must also be idle.
  • Test in your actual environment. Bluetooth signal readings are relative and can change with surroundings. Do not tune settings around an assumed number of feet.
  • Keep a dependable fallback. Use a reasonable idle timeout and manually lock the PC whenever you leave it unattended.

Do you need to buy anything?

No purchase is established as necessary. The Windows Bluetooth feature uses a phone paired with the PC, while other options depend on supported operating-system features and hardware. The cited guidance does not establish that a generic Bluetooth adapter, smartwatch, or security key is required or sufficient to enable proximity locking.
