Should You Ditch Your Tablet for a Foldable Phone? What the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold Can and Can’t Replace

Keep the tablet if you depend on its bigger screen for long reading or media sessions, stylus work, or a keyboard-centred workflow. Ditch it if it mostly serves as a portable screen for casual reading, messaging, web browsing, short video and the occasional pair of side-by-side apps. In that case a book-style foldable can cover both devices. The two current examples, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold, both have 8-inch inner screens. That is tablet-like, but smaller than many dedicated tablets.

What an 8-inch inner screen does and doesn’t give you

Samsung lists an 8-inch main display for the Galaxy Z Fold7. Google lists an 8-inch inner display for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Compared with a phone, that is a large jump for reading, maps, spreadsheets and video. Compared with a typical dedicated tablet, it is a compact screen. Eight inches does not make a foldable equivalent to a larger tablet for every task. Drawing, split-screen document work and long video sessions are where the gap shows first.

The main trade is this: you give up some screen area and gain one device in your pocket. That only pays off if you would otherwise leave the tablet at home.

Check the closed phone first

A foldable is your everyday phone before it is a tablet, so the outer screen matters. Samsung lists a 6.5-inch cover display with a 21:9 aspect ratio. Google lists a 6.4-inch outer display. If you can, try typing, browsing and carrying the closed device in a pocket before you commit. If the closed phone feels awkward, you will end up unfolding it for tasks you used to do one-handed on a normal phone.

Side-by-side comparison of the two current examples

Factor Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold
Inner display 8 inches (Samsung) 8 inches (Google)
Cover display 6.5 inches, 21:9 (Samsung) 6.4 inches (Google)
Battery capacity 4,400 mAh (Samsung) Typical 5,015 mAh (Google)
Cellular web-browsing battery test 10 h 44 min (Tom’s Guide) 12 h 16 min (Tom’s Guide)
Measured peak brightness 2,245 nits (Tom’s Guide) 2,566 nits (Tom’s Guide)
Apps on the inner screen Three (Tom’s Guide) Two (Tom’s Guide)
Water and dust rating IP48 (Tom’s Guide) IP68 (Tom’s Guide)
Stylus No S Pen support (Samsung) Not stated
Update commitment Not stated Seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates (Google)

The brightness and battery figures come from Tom’s Guide’s own comparison testing. They are not manufacturer claims and won’t match every usage pattern. Google separately claims 24+ hour battery life, which is a manufacturer figure and not something the independent test reproduced.

Where the foldable can replace a tablet

  • Casual reading and web use. The inner screen is much more comfortable than a slab phone for articles, comics and browsing.
  • Light multitasking. Tom’s Guide reports three apps at once on the Fold7 and two on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. If you routinely keep a chat, a browser and notes visible together, that difference counts.
  • Occasional video. What Hi-Fi? calls the Fold7 a plausible phone-and-tablet replacement for people who want productivity and multitasking. It also notes the premium cost and compromises in picture and sound performance. That is one reviewer’s judgment, not proof that every tablet workflow carries over.
  • Travel. One device and one charger beat two devices, as long as the screen is big enough for what you do on the road.

Where you should keep the tablet

Handwriting and drawing

Stylus support can decide the question. Samsung’s product page states: “Galaxy Z Fold7 does not support S Pen.” Check stylus support on the exact foldable model before you replace a tablet you use for notes, sketching or annotating documents.

Long sessions

If you read, watch or work for hours at a time, a larger tablet is easier on the eyes and hands. A foldable’s inner screen is also your phone’s battery drain, so heavy tablet use competes with the device you need for calls and navigation.

Keyboard-centred work

A tablet with a keyboard case gives you a stable laptop-like setup. A foldable can hold itself up in a half-open position, but an 8-inch workspace is cramped for sustained typing and multiple windows.

Screens larger than 8 inches

If you chose your tablet for a bigger canvas, the foldable’s inner screen will feel like a step down however good it looks.

Battery, charging and durability

In Tom’s Guide’s cellular web-browsing test, the Pixel lasted about 90 minutes longer than the Fold7. The Pixel also has the larger typical battery capacity on paper. Google says it charges to 50% in about 30 minutes, but that requires a 30W USB-C PPS charger or better, sold separately. Check what is in the box in your region.

On durability, Tom’s Guide reports IP68 for the Pixel and IP48 for the Samsung. The Samsung’s rating covers water splashes and immersion less comprehensively than the Pixel’s, and the “4” in the dust position means protection only against larger objects. If you take your tablet to the beach, pool or workshop, that matters. Samsung’s US page describes Samsung Care+ as coverage that can include accidental damage. Confirm plan terms and eligibility in your market. There is no reliable public data here on long-term foldable repair rates or service costs, so factor the cost of a damaged folding screen into your decision as an unknown.

Choosing between the Samsung and the Google model

  • Pick the Galaxy Z Fold7 if three-app multitasking and Samsung’s two-screen One UI software are your priority. Accept that there is no S Pen and the shorter measured battery life.
  • Pick the Pixel 10 Pro Fold if you want the longer browsing result in Tom’s Guide’s test, the IP68 rating and the seven-year update promise, and you can live with two apps on screen.

Neither is a general winner. It depends on which of those differences you will actually feel.

A quick test before you sell the tablet

  1. For one week, note what you actually do on the tablet: reading, video, notes, work, games, kids’ use.
  2. Mark any task that needs a stylus, a keyboard, or a screen bigger than 8 inches. Any one of these points to keeping the tablet.
  3. Handle a foldable in a store and check the closed phone for typing and pocket comfort.
  4. Add up the full cost: the phone, protection plan, any charger sold separately, and what you’d get for the tablet.
  5. If you’re still unsure, keep the tablet for a month after switching before you sell it.

No reliable figures exist on how many tablet owners stop using their tablet after buying a foldable, so your own task list is a better guide than any claim about what most people do.
