A market rally alone is not a sound reason to replace a long-term investment plan or increase its stock allocation. First check whether the rally has pushed your portfolio away from its intended asset mix. If it has, rebalancing can restore the risk level your plan was built to carry. Separately, review the plan if your goal, time horizon, financial situation or tolerance for losses has changed.
This is general educational information, not an individualized investment recommendation. Tax rules, account restrictions and suitable allocations depend on your circumstances and country.

A rally changes prices, not automatically your plan
A rally is a period in which markets or particular asset categories rise. It does not, by itself, change when you need the money, how much loss you can withstand, or what the money is for. Those personal facts are the foundation of an asset-allocation decision.
The SEC’s Beginner’s Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing cautions that investors generally should not change asset allocation simply because one category has recently outperformed. Its example is increasing the proportion of stocks because the stock market is hot. That is a performance-based reaction, not a plan-based decision.

SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing
Moving completely to cash after a rise creates a second risk: trying to decide when to get back in. Investor.gov warns that “jumping totally out of the market and trying to time the market may not be the best long-term investment strategy.” A rally can continue after an investor exits, while a later decision to re-enter may be delayed by fear or uncertainty.

- What is the goal? Retirement, a home purchase, education and a short-term reserve have different requirements for liquidity and loss tolerance.
- When will the money be needed? A goal that is approaching generally has less time to recover from a large decline than one several decades away.
- How much volatility can you tolerate? Consider both your financial ability to withstand losses and your willingness to remain invested during them.
- Has your financial situation changed? Income, debt, emergency savings, insurance, dependents or a major windfall can alter the amount of risk that is appropriate.
If one of these factors has materially changed, the target allocation may need a genuine review. That is different from changing the target merely because stocks, bonds or another category had a strong month or year.
2. Has market performance moved the portfolio away from its target?
Compare current weights with the allocation you selected for the plan. A rally in one category can make that category a larger percentage of the portfolio even when you have not bought more of it. Rebalancing means bringing the weights back toward the chosen targets; it does not mean guessing which asset will rise next.
For example, suppose a plan was designed around 60% stocks and 40% bonds. If stocks rise sharply and the portfolio becomes 80% stocks and 20% bonds, the investor now has more stock exposure than the plan intended. The 60% and 80% figures are an illustration of portfolio drift, not a recommendation or a published market statistic.
What rebalancing after a rally actually does
Rebalancing restores the portfolio’s intended risk profile. It may require reducing an overweight category, increasing an underweight category, or both. The objective is risk control, not return maximization. Vanguard summarizes the purpose this way: “The purpose of rebalancing is to manage risk, not maximize returns.”

There is no universal drift percentage or schedule that fits every investor. The appropriate trigger depends on the plan, account type, costs and the consequences of selling. The main implementation choices are:
| Approach | How it works | Points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sell the overweight category and buy the underweight category | Trade existing holdings until the portfolio is near its target mix. | In a taxable account, selling an appreciated holding can create a taxable gain. Trading fees and other costs may also apply. |
| Use new money for the underweight category | Direct deposits or new investments toward the category that has fallen below target, without selling the overweight holding. | This can reduce immediate selling and may be practical when regular contributions are large enough to close the gap. |
| Redirect ongoing contributions | Change the investment instructions for future contributions until weights move back toward target. | It may take time, and the portfolio can remain outside its target during that period. |
| Direct dividends and interest to an underweight category | Use portfolio cash flows to move the mix gradually. | The effect depends on the size and frequency of distributions. |
| Take planned withdrawals from an overweight category | When cash is being removed, withdraw from the category that is above target instead of selling proportionally. | Withdrawal rules, account restrictions and tax treatment vary by account and jurisdiction. |
These are options, not automatic instructions. A tax-advantaged account may make trading less immediately taxable than a taxable account, but it can still have investment menus, withdrawal or contribution rules. Check the account’s terms and the tax treatment where you live before placing an order.
When and how often should you review the portfolio?
Investor.gov discusses both periodic reviews and percentage-drift triggers. Vanguard describes an annual rebalance as a practical approach for many investors, while also cautioning against checking so often that normal market noise drives repeated trades. Neither source establishes a single schedule that is right for everyone.

Threshold review
Set a written rule that prompts a review when a category moves a specified distance from its target. A threshold can limit unnecessary trades, but the percentage should be chosen as part of the plan rather than improvised after a rally.
Event-driven review
Review sooner when a major personal event changes the plan’s assumptions: a nearer goal, a new dependent, a large change in income or debt, a retirement date, or a substantial change in your willingness or ability to accept losses. This is a plan review, not merely a rebalancing transaction.
A practical rebalancing process
- Write down the target allocation. Include each major asset category and the percentage intended for it. If you cannot state the target, clarify the plan before trading.
- Record current values. Use the latest account balances and calculate each category’s percentage of the total portfolio. Keep accounts that are part of the same goal in the same review.
- Measure the drift. Compare each current percentage with its target and identify which categories are overweight or underweight.
- Confirm that the target still fits. Recheck the goal, time horizon, risk tolerance and financial situation. If those have changed, determine the new target before deciding how to rebalance.
- Choose the least disruptive method that can work. Consider new contributions, redirected contributions, dividends, interest and planned withdrawals before selling appreciated holdings.
- Estimate costs and taxes. Check commissions or other transaction charges, tax consequences of realized gains and any account-specific restrictions. The exact result depends on the account and jurisdiction.
- Place only the trades needed to follow the rule. Do not add a market forecast or a new target simply because recent returns were strong.
- Document the date and result. Record the post-trade weights and the next review trigger so the next decision follows the same process.
How taxes and costs can change the choice
Rebalancing is not free in every account. Selling an appreciated investment in a taxable account can realize a capital gain, and transaction fees or other trading costs can reduce the amount invested. A trade that looks correct on a percentage chart may be unattractive if its tax bill or costs are disproportionate to the amount of drift.
Using new money, changing contribution directions, or allocating dividends and interest can reduce the need to sell. Those methods do not eliminate all tax questions: distributions, account rules and local tax treatment still matter. In a retirement or other tax-advantaged account, the immediate tax effect of a trade may differ, but withdrawal and contribution rules continue to apply.
Best Value
Because tax treatment differs by country, account type and holding period, use the rules that apply to your situation. If the amounts are significant or the account structure is complicated, a qualified tax or financial professional can help you evaluate the consequences before a transaction.
Decision examples
| Situation | Plan-based response | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| The rally leaves the target allocation essentially unchanged. | Continue the plan and follow its normal review process. | A strong market does not prove that the target should be increased. |
| The plan still fits, but one category is materially overweight. | Rebalance toward the existing target using an appropriate mix of sales, new money and cash flows. | Rebalancing is not a prediction that the winning category will fall. |
| A goal is closer, or the investor’s financial situation or loss tolerance has changed. | Review the target allocation itself, then implement any new plan deliberately. | Restoring the old percentages may be inappropriate if the underlying goal has changed. |
| The portfolio is drifted and selling would create a large taxable gain. | Compare the tax and cost impact with alternatives such as future contributions, dividends, interest or planned withdrawals. | “Never sell” is not a universal rule; it is one trade-off among several. |
| The investor is considering moving entirely to cash after the rally. | Separate the emotional reaction from the written plan and consider the difficulty of timing a re-entry. | Cash is not automatically a safer long-term choice for a goal that requires growth. |
Target-date funds and other delegated approaches
A target-date or lifecycle fund generally manages its own allocation and is designed to become more conservative as its stated target date approaches. Holding one can delegate much of the day-to-day rebalancing work to the fund manager.
That feature does not establish that any particular fund is suitable. Check the target date, investment approach, fees, glide path, holdings and how the fund treats accounts held outside it. An investor can still have an overall portfolio that is too aggressive or too conservative if other accounts are not considered.
Common mistakes after a market surge
- Chasing the recent winner: increasing an asset category because it just outperformed changes the plan based on a backward-looking signal.
- Confusing rebalancing with a new allocation: selling enough to restore a target is different from permanently raising or lowering that target.
- Trading on every headline: frequent checks can turn ordinary price movement into unnecessary costs and tax events.
- Ignoring the whole goal portfolio: reviewing one account in isolation can hide the actual allocation across accounts.
- Forgetting cash needs: money required soon may need a different treatment from long-term capital, regardless of the rally.
- Assuming a target-date fund solves every issue: its glide path may not match your goal, and it cannot rebalance assets held elsewhere.
- Skipping documentation: without a written target and trigger, the next rally or decline can produce another improvised decision.
When professional help may be useful
Professional guidance can be valuable when a goal, time horizon, risk tolerance or financial situation has changed and the consequences span several accounts. It may also help when tax effects, concentrated holdings, business interests or complicated withdrawal needs make a simple percentage comparison inadequate.
Ask any adviser to explain the assumptions, costs, tax considerations and rebalancing policy in plain language. The SEC’s investor education material supports seeking professional help when appropriate, but no outside professional can remove market risk or guarantee a result.
A disciplined answer to the rally question
Start with the written plan, not the market chart. If the plan still matches your life and the rally has caused allocation drift, rebalance according to a preselected method and review schedule. If your life has changed, revisit the target allocation itself. If neither is true, changing the investment plan solely because prices rose is usually a reaction to recent performance rather than a reasoned change in risk management.
