Should You Buy the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is a worthwhile upgrade only if its brighter display, larger battery and outdoor tools solve a problem for you. It keeps the 47 mm rugged-watch design and starts at $699.99 in the US before trade-in. For existing Ultra owners, casual exercisers and buyers who need dependable multi-day battery life, the case is harder to make.

What changed in the Galaxy Watch Ultra2?

Samsung kept the Ultra’s 47 mm format but revised its internals and case. The company lists an 800 mAh battery—35% more capacity than the previous Ultra—a display rated up to 5,000 nits, a case 12% thinner, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite platform. These are Samsung specifications and comparisons, not independent performance measurements. The result is an updated large watch, not a smaller or fundamentally redesigned one. Samsung’s US product page lists the current specifications.

Samsung also says its Marine band is 26% lighter than the previous band. TechRadar cited a 25% figure, so the exact comparison may depend on the band or configuration; the practical point is that Samsung presents the new band as lighter. Samsung’s July 31, 2026 first look describes the revision.

How much does it cost?

Samsung US lists the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 from $699.99 before trade-in, as of October 7, 2026. That is a US snapshot, not a guaranteed price in other regions or at every retailer. TechRadar reported launch prices of $699.99 in the US, £649 in the UK and AU$1,299 in Australia, and said the US and UK launch prices were $50 and £50 higher than the original Ultra’s launch prices. Local prices and promotions can change, so check the price for your country before buying. Samsung’s US listing is the source for its current US starting price.

Does the battery last long enough?

Samsung rates the watch for up to 60 hours with always-on display, but independent results differ. TechRadar reviewer Matt Evans reported 60 hours with always-on display enabled during five days and four nights of use. Android Central reviewer Nicholas Sutrich said his watch barely reached two days and took about two hours to charge from empty. Those are individual review results, not a promise or a controlled head-to-head test; your screen, GPS, sleep tracking and workout settings affect runtime. TechRadar’s review and Android Central’s September 10, 2026 review provide the contrasting accounts.

For a long run or route, Samsung estimates up to 16 hours for GPS/GPX route workouts when Exercise power-saving mode is enabled. That is a mode-specific estimate, not a general GPS battery figure or a substitute for checking the watch’s charge before setting out. Samsung’s product page gives the qualification.

Is it comfortable and readable?

At 47 mm, the Ultra2 remains a large watch. Its thinner case and lighter band may improve wearability, but neither changes its overall size; try it on if you have a smaller wrist or dislike bulky watches. Evans found it more comfortable than its predecessor in his review. Samsung rates the display at up to 5,000 nits, a peak specification intended to aid visibility in bright conditions; it does not mean the display stays at that brightness in all circumstances.

Is it a good watch for trail running?

The Ultra2 has more to offer trail runners than a typical smartwatch. Samsung’s Trail Run functions include elevation, climbing progress and cumulative ascent and descent. The watch also supports loaded GPX routes with turn-by-turn guidance. Sutrich praised its trail navigation, app multitasking, gestures and Running Coach. These features make it a credible option for runners who want Wear OS apps and route guidance in one device, though the available reviews do not establish that it replaces a dedicated sports watch for every athlete.

For runners whose main priorities are training tools and sports-focused features, TechRadar points to the Garmin Forerunner 970 as an alternative. A less expensive, standard Galaxy Watch may make more sense for casual exercise; TechRadar specifically judged the smaller Galaxy Watch9 a better value for that use. Those are reviewer recommendations rather than direct test results proving one watch is best for every runner.

Can you use it for diving?

Samsung describes the Ultra2 as EN13319 certified, rated 10 ATM and IP69K, and highlights advanced dive features developed with Mares. The Mares app is required for those functions. Samsung specifies recreational scuba use only, up to 40 metres, and says not to use the watch for diving below that depth. Certification and water-resistance ratings do not establish suitability for every dive profile or replace dive training and professional equipment. Check the current app and regional requirements before relying on the feature. Samsung’s product information sets out the stated limits.

Which health features work with your phone?

Phone compatibility matters if you are buying the Ultra2 for health tools rather than general smartwatch functions. Android Central reported that some of the watch’s best health features are limited to Samsung-phone owners and criticized blood-pressure setup and food logging. Samsung markets sleep-apnea risk detection as FDA-cleared, but it is risk detection—not a diagnosis—and availability or eligibility may depend on region, phone and software. Confirm current Samsung requirements for the specific features you intend to use before buying; do not assume every feature works with every Android phone.

Evans found some readings generally accurate after warm-up, but his optical heart-rate test initially ran about 20 bpm below an Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Polar H10 before moving closer after roughly 15 minutes. His body-composition result was initially far from an industrial scale reading, then moved closer after hydration and technique changes. These are one reviewer’s observations, not medical validation or evidence that the watch will match another device for you. TechRadar also said it had not yet logged enough nights to assess features calibrated over seven-day averages.

Should you upgrade from the original Ultra?

The upgrade brings meaningful capacity and comfort changes on paper, but the same 47 mm concept remains. Consider upgrading if the thinner case, brighter-rated screen, newer platform or extra battery capacity addresses a specific frustration and the price fits your budget. If your current Ultra already meets your needs, the supplied reviewer evidence does not establish a must-have improvement that makes replacement worthwhile.

Who should buy it—and who should skip it?

  • Buy it if you use a Samsung phone, want a premium Wear OS watch, and will make use of the trail guidance, large display or recreational dive functions.
  • Consider another option if you mainly need a watch for casual workouts: TechRadar says the smaller, cheaper Galaxy Watch9 is better value for that purpose.
  • Look at a specialist sports watch if training features matter more than Samsung’s app ecosystem; TechRadar names the Garmin Forerunner 970 as a runner-focused alternative.
  • Skip the upgrade for now if you own the original Ultra, are satisfied with it and cannot point to a specific Ultra2 improvement you need.
  • Check compatibility first if ECG, blood pressure or sleep-apnea risk detection is central to your decision. Android Central favors the Pixel Watch 5 in its Wear OS recommendations, while recognizing the Ultra2’s appeal to Samsung-phone owners and people prioritizing trail running or diving.

In short, the Ultra2 is a stronger fit for Samsung users who want one large, rugged smartwatch for everyday use and occasional outdoor activities than for buyers seeking the best value, a smaller case or predictable multi-day runtime.
