The iPad mini 8 has not been officially announced in the reporting available here. A December 18, 2025, Tom’s Guide report described OLED and an A20 Pro chip as possible upgrades, not confirmed specifications. If you need a compact tablet now, assess the currently available iPad mini on its own merits; wait only if you are comfortable postponing a purchase for a successor whose timing and features remain uncertain.
What “got even better” means—and what is actually known
The headline points to a rumored next-generation Apple iPad mini, not an announced product. Tom’s Guide’s December 18, 2025 report identified the iPad mini 7 as the current model in its discussion and said a successor might bring an OLED display. It also raised the possibility of an A20 Pro chip. Neither feature was presented as an Apple-confirmed specification, and the report did not establish that the iPad mini 8 was available to buy.

The chip claim has an additional uncertainty: the report attributed it to leaked internal code reportedly shared by tipster Kang on Weibo. That is indirect rumor sourcing, not an Apple statement or a verified product specification. The OLED claim should likewise be treated as reported expectation rather than confirmation. Should you buy an iPad mini now or wait?
| Your situation | More practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need a compact tablet soon | Consider the iPad mini currently sold in your region | A rumored successor has no confirmed release timing or final specifications. |
| Your current tablet works and an OLED screen matters to you | Waiting may make sense | OLED was reported as a possible upgrade, but it has not been confirmed; waiting carries no guarantee that the feature will arrive. |
| You are mainly hoping for a performance jump | Wait for official chip details and comparable testing | The A20 Pro mention is leak-based, and the report establishes no performance gain. |
| Price or availability is decisive | Check current local listings before deciding | The report does not verify today’s official lineup, price, or regional availability. |
What to verify before you buy
- Model and availability: Confirm Apple’s current lineup and which iPad mini model is sold in your country. The report’s identification of the iPad mini 7 reflects its own context, not a verified current listing for every region.
- Price: Check the current regional price from an official or reputable retailer; no current price is established here.
- Display and size: Compare the specifications of the device you can buy with your needs. Do not treat OLED on a successor as settled.
- Performance: Use official chip specifications and comparable independent tests once a successor is real. The rumor does not support a speed estimate.
- Timing: Do not plan around the report’s speculative launch windows as if they were current forecasts. No release date is confirmed by the cited report.
How to read the iPad mini 8 rumors
There are two separate questions: whether Apple will release a successor with these features, and when it might do so. The cited report establishes neither. It describes OLED as an expected or rumored change and the A20 Pro as a further possibility; it gives no basis for predicting how much brighter, faster, or longer-lasting a future model would be. Until Apple announces a device and publishes specifications, treat those details as unconfirmed rather than as reasons to assume a particular buying outcome.
