Should You Buy or Rent Your Router From Your Internet Provider?

Neither buying nor renting is always cheaper or better. Check your provider’s monthly equipment charge, confirm which devices your plan requires, and compare the rental cost over the time you expect to keep service with the full price of compatible equipment. Renting may include support or maintenance; buying can avoid recurring equipment charges but puts compatibility, setup, and replacement on you.

What you may need: a router, modem, or gateway

A router shares an internet connection with devices on your home network. A modem connects cable internet service to that network. A gateway combines modem and router functions. The right equipment depends on your internet technology and provider; a router alone does not replace a required cable modem or gateway.

For example, Cox says customers need a separate router if their modem does not include one, and allows customers to purchase a modem certified for its network. Some Xfinity fiber communities can use a third-party router. These are provider- and location-specific examples, not general rules. Check your own plan and service address.

How to decide whether buying or renting makes sense

Compare the complete cost and responsibilities for your situation rather than relying on a generic estimate. FCC broadband-label materials identify equipment requirements, whether equipment is included in the base price, and applicable monthly rental or lease charges as information providers must disclose. Start with your current plan label and bill; the fee and included equipment can vary by provider and plan.

Factor Rent from your provider Buy your own
Cost Use the actual monthly equipment charge and how long you expect to pay it. Include the full up-front price of compatible equipment and any recurring provider equipment charges that still apply.
Compatibility The provider supplies equipment for its service, but check what is included in your plan. You must confirm the device is accepted for your service address, technology, and speed tier.
Support and maintenance Terms vary. Some providers describe equipment maintenance or include additional equipment such as a mesh router. Support can be limited. Mediacom, for example, says it is not obligated to support or repair customer-owned equipment.
Setup and troubleshooting Ask what setup help and troubleshooting the provider offers for rented equipment. Ask how to activate the device and whether the provider will troubleshoot it; you may need to configure it yourself.
Replacement and upgrades Check the provider’s terms for equipment replacement and what happens if your service changes. You are responsible for repairs or replacement, and a future speed upgrade may make the device unsuitable.

There is no universal rental fee or break-even period. To compare costs, multiply your actual monthly equipment charge by the number of months you expect to keep service, then compare that total with the up-front cost of equipment approved for your plan. Factor in differences in support, maintenance, and replacement responsibility rather than treating the lowest dollar total as the only consideration.

Check compatibility before buying

  1. Identify what your plan requires. Check whether your service uses a modem, router, or combined gateway, and note which devices are already included.
  2. Check your provider’s current equipment list. Confirm approval for your exact service address and plan. Cox and Xfinity provide compatibility guidance; ARRIS also advises checking the provider list and subscribed speed tier.
  3. For cable internet, verify the modem. It must be approved and support your subscribed speed. ARRIS warns that an incompatible modem may fail to connect or impair performance.
  4. Read the equipment charges. Check your broadband label and bill to see whether equipment is included in the base price or billed separately, and whether the charge applies to a router, modem, or gateway.
  5. Ask about support and activation. Find out how to activate customer-owned equipment, what the provider will troubleshoot, and who handles repair or replacement.
  6. Recheck when your service changes. Before upgrading speed or replacing a device, verify that it remains compatible with current provider requirements.

When renting is the more practical choice

Renting may be worthwhile if the provider’s fee is acceptable to you and the rental terms include support, maintenance, or equipment that would otherwise require a separate purchase. Those benefits are not guaranteed: Shentel describes normal equipment maintenance and a mesh router with its rental modem, while other providers may offer different terms. Read the terms for your account before deciding.

When buying may fit better

Buying may suit you if your provider approves equipment that meets your plan’s requirements, you are comfortable handling setup and troubleshooting, and the up-front cost compares favorably with the rental charge over your expected service period. Check whether a separate modem is needed; a router by itself may not connect cable service.

Questions to ask your provider

  • Which equipment does my plan include, and do I need a separate modem, router, or gateway?
  • What is the current monthly charge for renting each device, and is any equipment included in the base price?
  • Which customer-owned models are approved at my address and speed tier?
  • How do I activate my own equipment, and what troubleshooting support is available?
  • Who handles repairs or replacement, and could a planned speed upgrade require different equipment?
