Often—but only when the older phone’s actual price, remaining software support, battery condition, and warranty make it a better deal for your needs. A one-year age gap alone doesn’t determine value. Compare the exact models and purchase conditions, then decide whether the newer phone’s specific upgrades matter enough to pay for.
Start with the deal, not the model year
Compare the same storage capacity and condition: new against new, or renewed against renewed. Include tax, required plan or carrier terms, trade-in conditions, financing costs, and warranty coverage. A headline discount can shrink or disappear once those details are included.

There is no dependable universal discount for last year’s flagship, and one generation’s value gap does not predict another’s. Check current listings for the exact model, region, storage tier, and seller. A phone sold new, a certified renewed phone, and a privately sold used phone are different offers even if they share a model name.

Decide whether the newer model’s changes matter to you
Compare the phones feature by feature rather than assuming that the newest one is substantially better—or that the older one is effectively identical. Focus on the differences you will notice during your intended ownership:

- Performance: chipset, demanding games or apps, and how long you expect to keep the device.
- Cameras: sensor hardware, ultrawide or telephoto changes, and software features you actually use.
- Screen and battery: display changes, battery life, and charging, including wired and wireless speeds.
- Software features: any new capability that is important to you, as well as the older model’s remaining update support.
For example, Android Central’s comparison describes the Galaxy S26 Plus as bringing a newer chipset, refreshed design, and faster wireless charging, while characterizing the S25 Plus as retaining strong performance, cameras, software support, and battery life. That is a model-specific comparison, not a guarantee about today’s prices or a verdict for every buyer. Read Android Central’s Galaxy S26 Plus versus S25 Plus comparison.
Another example shows why “newer” does not mean “better in every respect.” Android Authority’s February 2026 comparison describes a $500 price-gap example between the Galaxy S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra and argues that the newer phone’s day-to-day differences may not justify that gap for many buyers. It notes a newer SoC and improved ultrawide camera on the S25 Ultra, while the S Pen lost Bluetooth support present on the S24 Ultra. The price is an example in that article, not a market-wide discount, and its value judgment is the authors’ analysis. Read Android Authority’s S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra analysis.
Count the software support you will actually have left
Update support is tied to the manufacturer’s stated start date, not the date you buy the phone. A discounted older device therefore does not get a fresh support period when it changes hands. Look up the exact model’s current policy from its manufacturer and check that the remaining period covers how long you plan to keep it.

Samsung Galaxy S series
Samsung’s US Galaxy S-series guide states that the S24 series receives seven years of OS and security updates. It lists four years of OS updates and five years of security updates for the S23, S22, S21, S20, and S10 series. Because the page also contains dated lineup language, use it for these stated support terms cautiously and verify the exact model’s current policy with Samsung. The figures apply to the US guide, not automatically to every region. Check Samsung’s US Galaxy S-series guide.
If it is used, assess the battery and repair risk
A low price may not be a bargain if a battery replacement or other repair is imminent. Check battery health where the device exposes it, ask about repair history, and get the seller’s condition description, return terms, and warranty in writing. Price a plausible repair before deciding, rather than treating a used phone’s battery as equivalent to a new one.
Apple’s battery figures are design targets under ideal conditions, not a test or guarantee for an individual used iPhone. Apple says iPhone 14 and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; iPhone 15 and later are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 cycles. Actual capacity depends on use and charging.

Check an iPhone’s battery information
On iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later, Battery Health can show maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacture and first-use dates, and a replacement recommendation. On iPhone 11–14, check Battery Health & Charging for battery-health information. Apple also notes that aging can cause longer app launches, lower frame rates, slower processing, reduced wireless-data throughput, dimming, lower speaker volume, and, in extreme cases, temporarily disabled camera flash or other camera features. See Apple’s battery and performance guidance.

As Apple puts it, “All rechargeable batteries are consumables and have a limited lifespan—eventually their capacity and performance decline so that they need to be replaced.” A displayed health figure helps assess risk; it does not reveal every issue with a device.

New old stock
A last-generation phone sold new may offer a straightforward warranty and unused battery, but check whether the seller is authorized, the device is compatible with your carrier and region, and the return window and warranty are clear.
Certified renewed
Samsung’s US Certified Re-Newed program page says its phones receive a certified new battery, genuine Samsung parts, a 147-point quality inspection, and a one-year limited warranty. It lists a 15-day return period, subject to restocking fees. These are terms on Samsung’s US program page; do not assume they apply to other regions, sellers, or renewed products. Review Samsung US Certified Re-Newed terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsed from an independent seller
This may have the lowest asking price, but the buyer may have less recourse and more uncertainty about battery wear, repair history, and condition. Make the price reflect those risks and the remedies actually offered by the seller.
A newer mid-range phone
Do not limit the choice to two flagship generations. A newer mid-range model may be a better fit if it offers the features you need and stronger purchase protections or longer remaining support than an older used flagship. Compare specific models, not category labels. Tech Advisor also identifies modern mid-range phones as a meaningful alternative when weighing a used flagship’s support, battery, and repair costs. Read Tech Advisor’s guide to buying an old flagship.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before you choose
- Match the offers: Confirm model, storage, condition, region, carrier compatibility, and whether it is locked or unlocked.
- Calculate the total price: Include tax, financing, trade-in requirements, and any carrier or plan conditions.
- Identify the feature trade-off: Write down which newer-model changes you would actually use and what you would give up by choosing the older phone.
- Verify remaining support: Use the manufacturer’s current policy for that exact model and count from the stated start date.
- Check battery and condition: Review available battery information, repair history, warranty, return window, and likely repair costs.
- Compare ownership horizon: Make sure the available support and purchase protection suit how long you expect to keep the phone.
- Compare a third option: Check a newer mid-range phone or a manufacturer-certified renewed model if either offers a better balance of price, features, support, and recourse.
