Buy iPhone Duo if you will regularly use its 7.6-inch inner screen for side-by-side apps, reading, editing, gaming or hands-free calls. Choose an iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max if you care more about telephoto reach, a familiar slab-phone design, lower cost or established ergonomics. At $2,999 CAD for 256GB at launch, Duo is a premium productivity and display purchase, not a universal upgrade.
Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. Pre-orders open October 16, with availability from October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions; 28 additional markets follow on October 30. Check your local Apple store for the price, taxes, stock and launch date in your country.

What you are buying
iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. It works as a conventional phone when closed and opens into a larger, tablet-like workspace. The 5.4-inch outer display handles quick tasks, while the 7.6-inch inner display is designed for extended reading, video, gaming and multitasking. Apple says the inner panel is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe two screens use the same aspect ratio, so apps and content can move between them with less visual disruption. Duo supports portrait, landscape, seated, standing and closed positions. That flexibility is the product’s central appeal: it can be a pocketable phone, a small reading canvas or a self-supporting screen without carrying a second device.
#1 Best Overall
- [Compatible with iPhone Duo] This Phone Case Only Compatible with iPhone Duo case 7.6 inch.
- [Skin-Friendly] The back of the case is crafted with a skin-touch matte finish, which feels smooth and non-slip in your hand. Unlike glossy surfaces that attract fingerprints and smudges, this matte texture stays clean with minimal wiping, while its soft tactile sensation enhances holding comfort for long periods.
- [Magnetic Craft] The built-in magnetic ring can strengthen the magnetic absorption, empowering the case to be compatible with wireless charger, magnetic car mount, magnetic battery bank, magnetic wallet, and most MagSafe accessories. The perfectly aligned magnets enable wireless charging faster and safer than ever. Wireless charge on with the case on.
- [Shock Protection] Withstanding the rigorous 10-foot military-grade drop test, it builds a solid defense for your device, and can easily resist the damage caused by violent impacts and accidental drops.
- [Precise Cutout] Precise cutout fits the volume buttons, side button, and curves of your device without adding bulk. It is a more lightweight case with a firm and comfortable grip.
Apple CEO John Ternus describes Duo as “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.” That is a product-positioning statement, not an independent test result, but it accurately identifies the buying decision: you are paying for a new form factor and the software built around it.
Price, storage and availability
| Item | What Apple has announced | What to verify locally |
|---|---|---|
| Starting configuration | 256GB | Final regional price, sales tax and financing |
| Canadian launch price | $2,999 CAD for 256GB | Whether your market uses a different currency or price |
| Storage options | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB | Stock and delivery dates for each capacity |
| Pre-orders | October 16, 2026 | Local opening time and retailer availability |

| Additional markets | 28 more markets on October 30, 2026 | Whether your market is in this second wave |
Do not convert the Canadian price mechanically into your currency. Apple’s regional pricing, taxes, import costs and storage premiums can differ substantially. A 2TB model may also change the value calculation for people who shoot large video files, while 256GB is the sensible baseline for most buyers who use cloud storage.
Duo versus iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max
The iPhone 18 Pro models use the same A20 Pro chip, but they serve a different purpose. The table separates confirmed specifications from areas where Apple’s launch materials do not provide a comparable figure.

Display and foldable design
The outer screen
The closed 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display is the quick-access screen for calls, messages, navigation and short tasks. Its smaller footprint should make one-handed use and pocket storage easier than opening the phone for every interaction.
The inner screen
Open Duo to reveal a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. Apple specifies ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On capability and up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness. The same aspect ratio on both screens is intended to make the transition between closed and open states predictable.

- [N52 magnet - for Magsafe accessories compatibility] N52 magnets provide reliable magnetic force with proven, everyday durability. Industry-standard N52 magnets deliver a consistently strong connection, keeping chargers, car mounts, and magnetic accessories securely in place.
- [Full Hinge Protection] Front and rear panels are connected through an integrated PC hinge guard — no loose panels. Unlike standard Fold cases that separate and loosen over time, this design stays securely connected.
- [Slim & Protective] Dual-layer construction fully covers the device, delivering drop protection in a slim profile that adds minimal bulk to the phone. Built for those who want the phone protected.
- [Drop & Camera Protection] Spigen's Air-cushion technology in the corners of the case absorb the impact of everyday drops, and raised edges around the camera keep the lenses elevated off flat surfaces, helping protect against scratches and everyday damage.
- [Compatible with MagSafe Accessories and Fast Wireless Charging] Spigen Tough Armor Pro MagFit for iPhone Duo
The inner panel has a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and make the crease less visible. That wording describes an engineering goal, not a guarantee that the crease disappears in every room. Apple has not supplied independent measurements of crease visibility under different lighting, viewing angles or temperatures. Expect to notice some change in reflections at the fold until long-term hands-on testing establishes how prominent it is in daily use.
Positions that replace a stand
Duo can be used open in portrait or landscape, partly folded while seated or standing, or closed for normal phone use. The partially folded positions are useful for watching a show, following a workout, setting the phone on a table for a call or framing a group video conversation. They are a meaningful advantage over a rigid slab, but they do not make the phone a full iPad replacement for every task: the open area is still smaller than a tablet, and the hinge adds a new mechanical component to protect.
Multitasking in iOS 27
iOS 27 is adapted for Duo rather than merely stretching a phone interface. Split View places two apps side by side. You can move content between them, open two windows of an app such as Safari and save frequently used app pairs.
Practical combinations
- Research and writing: Keep a browser or document on one side and notes or a writing app on the other.
- Travel: Display a boarding pass or map while keeping messages or itinerary details visible.
- Shopping and comparison: Read specifications on one side while recording decisions or checking a list on the other.
- Content work: Review footage, scripts or reference images while editing in a second pane.
- Communication: Keep a call or chat visible while consulting a calendar, document or web page.
Saved app pairs matter if you repeat the same workflow. A reader who opens Split View once a month will not capture much value; someone who uses two-app layouts every workday may save enough context switching to justify the premium.
StandBy without a charger
StandBy can run on either display without charging. That lets Duo act as a clock, information panel or ambient screen while resting on a desk or bedside table. Apple also positions the folded design for movies, workouts and hands-free FaceTime.

Performance and Apple intelligence features
Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro, also found in the iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple describes a custom vapor chamber, a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. It claims up to 35% better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple’s launch material does not establish sustained gaming temperatures, frame-rate consistency, battery drain during heavy editing or performance after months of use. If you play demanding games for long sessions, wait for reputable thermal testing before treating the vapor chamber as proof of superior endurance.
Siri AI is rolling out in beta with iOS 27. Language and regional availability vary, so check Apple’s software availability for your language before buying specifically for an AI feature. Cameras: where Pro models pull ahead
Duo’s camera system
Duo combines a 48MP Fusion Main camera, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, a 12MP Center Stage front camera and an under-display FaceTime camera. Apple lists up to 2x optical-quality zoom. Folding-specific features include Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue, Duo FaceTime and 4K 120fps Dolby Vision recording.
The folding design adds useful shooting angles. Duo Preview can show a subject what the camera sees, while the inner and outer displays can support different participants in a call. Center Stage is aimed at keeping people framed during video calls rather than maximizing conventional selfie-camera specifications.

Why choose iPhone 18 Pro instead
The iPhone 18 Pro models add a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. That difference is decisive for distant subjects, stage photography, wildlife, travel details and portraits that benefit from tighter framing. Pro models are also the safer choice if you want established pro-camera controls and do not expect to use the inner display often.
Apple’s launch information does not establish comparative image quality, autofocus behavior, low-light results or stabilization between Duo and the Pro models. Do not infer that matching megapixels mean matching photographs; lens design, sensor size, processing and camera controls all affect results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery, charging and connectivity
Three different battery claims
Apple rates Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display and up to 24 hours when both displays are used equally. These are Apple’s stated playback figures, not independent endurance tests. The difference shows why screen choice matters: opening the large panel more often can reduce runtime compared with quick tasks on the outer display.
Charging
Duo supports up to 50% wired charging in around 20 minutes and wireless charging in around 30 minutes with MagSafe or Qi2. The exact conditions behind those times, including adapter output, starting charge and temperature, are not specified by Apple. Use a compatible high-output adapter and expect actual results to vary.
eSIM-only operation
Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. Apple says eSIM support spans more than 500 carriers, but that does not guarantee activation for your plan, prepaid service or travel provider. Before ordering, confirm that your carrier supports eSIM for this exact model and that it can transfer your existing number. If you require a physical SIM, Duo is the wrong choice.

Durability, hinge and crease expectations
The enclosure uses grade 5 titanium, Ceramic Shield on the front and back, a scratch-resistant coating on the inner display and an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating. The hinge contains more than 100 components. Those specifications suggest substantial engineering, but they do not answer every ownership question.
- Apple has not provided independent hinge-cycle testing.
- Long-term failure rates and repair prices are not established.
- IP68 is not a promise against every drop, pressure event, hinge obstruction or liquid exposure.
- The inner display’s scratch resistance should not be treated as equivalent to the glass on a conventional phone.
- Crease visibility can vary with lighting, viewing angle and reflections; independent testing is still needed.
A foldable deserves more careful handling than a slab phone. Keep grit away from the hinge and inner panel, do not press debris into the fold and use protection designed for the two-part construction. Apple’s durability claims are useful specifications, not a substitute for a repair plan or an extended warranty where available.
Cases, folios, chargers and Apple Pencil
Protection
Apple sells a two-part iPhone Duo Case and an iPhone Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand. Both support MagSafe and Qi2 25W charging. The folio is the more natural fit if you regularly prop the phone for video, workouts or calls; the two-part case is the simpler choice when you want protection with less bulk.
Recommended Free Tools
Marketplace availability, colors and regional pricing can change. Confirm that any third-party case leaves the hinge clear, protects both sections and does not interfere with wireless charging or opening the inner display.
Charging equipment
Look for a MagSafe or Qi2 charger rated for the charging mode you intend to use. A generic wireless pad may charge, but it may not provide the advertised alignment or speed. For the around-20-minute wired claim, use a suitable USB-C power adapter and cable; Apple has not stated the exact adapter specification in its launch material.
Apple Pencil support
Apple says Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is coming later in 2026 for notes, sketches and markup. The timing is a future software or compatibility commitment, not a feature available at every launch date. If handwriting is your main reason to buy, confirm that support has arrived in your region and software version before paying for the phone and stylus.
Who should buy iPhone Duo
- You routinely need two apps visible at once and will use Split View several times a week.
- You read long documents, edit media, play games or watch video where a 7.6-inch canvas is materially better than a slab phone.
- You make frequent hands-free calls and can use the folded positions or StandBy.
- You already use iCloud, iMessage and FaceTime and want a foldable without leaving Apple’s ecosystem.
- You accept paying a substantial premium for a first-generation form factor while independent long-term testing develops.
Who should skip it
- You primarily want the longest camera reach: the iPhone 18 Pro models offer up to 8x optical-quality zoom versus Duo’s up to 2x.
- You prefer the lowest price, a familiar one-piece phone or the lightest established ergonomics.
- Your carrier cannot activate eSIM, or you depend on a physical SIM for travel or work.
- You rarely use a large screen and would open the phone only occasionally.
- You are unwilling to budget for dedicated foldable protection or to accept uncertainty around hinge repairs and long-term durability.
A practical buying checklist
- Measure your real use case. List the two-app combinations, reading sessions, calls or creative tasks you would perform every week. If you cannot name recurring tasks, the inner display may become an expensive novelty.
- Check the local total price. Select your storage tier on Apple’s regional store and include taxes, case or folio, charger and any extended coverage.
- Verify eSIM before ordering. Ask your carrier about activation, number transfer, prepaid support and international roaming for the exact Duo model.
- Compare camera priorities. Choose an iPhone 18 Pro model if 8x optical-quality zoom, telephoto portraits or conventional camera controls matter more than folding features.
- Plan protection. Choose a case or folio that covers both halves, preserves hinge movement and supports your preferred MagSafe or Qi2 setup.
- Test the ergonomics. If possible, handle a demo unit both closed and open. Apple has not supplied comparable weight figures here, so hand comfort and pocket fit should be judged in person.
- Confirm software timing. Check whether Siri AI features and Apple Pencil USB-C support are available in your language, region and installed iOS 27 release.
Verdict
iPhone Duo is worth its premium when the foldable canvas changes how you work or communicate. Split View, saved app pairs, flexible viewing positions, Center Stage calling and the 7.6-inch inner display offer capabilities a conventional iPhone cannot reproduce as conveniently.

It is not the automatic best iPhone. The iPhone 18 Pro models are the more rational purchase for telephoto photography, familiar handling, lower-cost configurations or anyone who will mostly use a phone closed. Because independent evidence on hinge life, crease visibility, repair pricing, sustained thermals and comparative camera quality is not yet available, cautious buyers should wait for long-term testing. For readers with a clear daily need for a larger screen, however, Duo is the first iPhone whose defining feature is genuinely different rather than simply faster.
