What DLC and a season pass mean on Steam
Steam supports both free and paid downloadable content. Once you own DLC, Steam treats it as part of the associated game. Depending on the title, DLC can add an expansion, new maps or levels, additional characters, story chapters, modes, or other playable material.
A season pass is a package containing current and future DLC purchased in one transaction. Steam’s model gives you access to each included item as it is released, while the publisher commits to an expected release schedule. That makes a pass different from buying a finished bundle: some of what you paid for may not yet exist in a playable form.

The names are not perfectly standardized. One game’s “season pass” may contain two large expansions; another may include a mixture of small add-ons and cosmetic items. Read the individual contents rather than assuming that every pass represents the same amount of value.
Define which kind of 100% completion you want
Base-game completion
Many players mean “all achievements in the original game” when they say they want 100%. If the base-game achievement set can be completed without any add-on, DLC is not required for that narrower goal. You can finish the base set and leave add-on achievements untouched.
All-content completion
Completionists sometimes mean every achievement listed for the game, including achievements added by expansions. That is a broader target. A game can be complete by its original design while still having additional achievement groups attached to later DLC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSteam does not apply one universal rule to every title’s achievement counts, DLC groups, or displayed completion percentage. Publishers configure those details per game, and the configuration can change. Before spending money, inspect the current achievement list and the game’s DLC information so you know whether your personal definition of “100%” includes add-on achievements.
Why DLC can be necessary for achievements
Valve’s achievement announcement states: “Some games contain achievements that can only be earned once you have purchased additional content.” This is the key reason a DLC purchase can become necessary for an all-content target: ownership of the additional content may be a prerequisite for the achievement itself.
That statement does not mean every DLC includes achievements, or that every achievement in a DLC pack is mandatory for the base game. It means the requirement exists in some games. The exact number of gated achievements, the expansion that contains them, and the conditions for unlocking them are title-specific.

Separate the purchase requirement from the play requirement. Owning the correct DLC may unlock the achievement category, but you still need to play the relevant content and satisfy its objectives. Check the achievement descriptions for the game you own; do not infer the requirements from the DLC’s name alone.

- Open the game in your Steam Library. Use the game’s Library page as the starting point for its downloadable content information.
- Open the DLC section. Steam Support directs users to the Library page and its DLC section to find available downloadable content. Record the names of released expansions, unreleased items, and any listed season pass.
- Open the game’s achievement list. Look for achievement groups or descriptions that identify an expansion, chapter, map, character, or other add-on. Note which achievements are part of the base game and which are associated with DLC.
- Match achievements to a specific purchase. If an achievement names a particular expansion, you may need that individual item rather than a larger bundle. If the list is unclear, treat the requirement as unconfirmed until the store description or the developer’s current information clarifies it.
- Check release status. A season pass may list content that is announced but not yet available. Separate what you can play today from what you would be prepaying.
- Write down the prices you would actually pay. Compare the pass with only the DLC you expect to play, not automatically with every item shown in the bundle.
When buying one DLC now makes sense
Individual DLC is usually the most controlled choice when one released expansion contains the achievements you want. You can pay for the specific content, evaluate its reviews, and avoid financing unrelated or future items.
- The achievement target is concentrated in one expansion. A single purchase may satisfy your all-content goal without committing you to a broader package.
- You would play the expansion without the badge. The achievement adds motivation, but the content itself justifies the purchase.
- The expansion is already available and well reviewed. You can judge its quality instead of relying on a promised feature list.
- The season pass includes material you do not want. A nominal bundle discount is not useful if most of the bundle will remain unplayed.
Buying separately can cost more than a pass in some games, but the higher total is not the only consideration. Paying for less content can be better value when it prevents unwanted purchases and gives you a known, playable product.
When a season pass is the better fit
A season pass can be sensible when several listed expansions are genuinely attractive and the combined price is lower than buying those same items individually. The discount should be meaningful relative to the content you expect to use, not merely relative to the theoretical price of every item in the package.
- Several expansions meet your play goals. You are interested in more than the one DLC that contains a particular achievement.
- The included content is substantial. Story expansions, large areas, new campaigns, or major modes may justify a bundle more readily than a collection of small extras.
- The discount survives a realistic comparison. Add the current prices of only the DLC you would otherwise buy and compare that total with the pass price.
- You accept delayed access. Future content will arrive according to the publisher’s expected schedule, not necessarily on the day you purchase the pass.
Consider the pass a commitment to a content roadmap. You receive the included DLC as it releases, but you also accept uncertainty about timing and the eventual quality of material that has not been reviewed or played.

pass price < price of the individual DLC you would definitely buy
That comparison is more useful than adding every item advertised in the pass. If you would buy only one expansion, compare the pass with that one expansion. If you would play three of four announced expansions, compare it with those three, while treating the fourth as a bonus rather than as proof of savings.
Also distinguish a one-time discount from a recurring pattern. A launch bundle may be cheaper today, while individual DLC may receive discounts later. If the achievement is optional and you are not ready to play, waiting preserves the possibility of a lower price and gives you more information about future content.

When waiting for a sale is the rational choice
Wait when the pass contains unreleased or uncertain content, the achievement is not urgent, or the game’s DLC has historically received discounts. Waiting lets you read reviews, see whether the promised releases arrive on schedule, and assess whether the achievement chase remains enjoyable.
A sale is especially attractive when you want only one expansion. You can buy that DLC after its quality and achievement requirements are clear instead of paying for a package whose value depends on future releases.
Waiting is less compelling when you already know you will play multiple released expansions and the current pass discount is substantial compared with those specific purchases. In that case, calculate the difference and decide whether the savings justify accepting the pass’s future-content risk.

When skipping DLC is the right decision
Skip the purchase when the only benefit is a higher percentage on a profile and the required price or time exceeds your enjoyment. Achievements are optional goals; they should not turn content you do not want into an obligation.
You can also skip when the DLC offers no meaningful replay value for you, when the pass contains mostly items you would not use, or when the future release schedule is too uncertain for your budget. A base-game completion is a legitimate endpoint even if additional achievement groups remain available.

Buy individual DLC now
Choose this path when one released expansion contains the achievements you want, its content is well reviewed, and you would play it even without the achievement badge.
Buy the season pass
Choose the pass when several listed expansions appeal to you, the bundle discount is meaningful against the DLC you would actually buy, and you are comfortable paying before all releases are available.
Wait
Wait for reviews or a sale when the pass includes unreleased content, the achievement is optional, or the title’s downloadable content commonly receives discounts.
Skip
Skip when the purchase serves only a percentage increase and the cost, time, or uncertain quality would reduce your enjoyment.

Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming every DLC has achievements
Some add-ons may be entirely cosmetic or otherwise contain no achievements. Verify the achievement list before buying for this purpose.
Assuming every DLC achievement is required for the base game
DLC achievements can be separate from the original achievement set. Decide whether your target is the base game or every achievement attached to the title.
Comparing a pass with content you would never play
A bundle can look inexpensive when its advertised value includes several items you do not want. Use your planned purchases as the comparison baseline.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Treating announced content as finished content
A season pass provides future DLC as it releases. Release timing and final quality remain uncertain until those items are available and reviewed.
Relying on old counts or prices
Achievement counts, DLC gating, prices, discounts, and season-pass contents are configured per title and can change. Recheck the current Steam store, DLC section, and achievement pages immediately before purchasing.
A decision checklist
- Have you decided whether base-game completion or all-content completion is your goal?
- Which exact achievements are DLC-gated?
- Which expansion contains each gated achievement?
- Is that expansion released and reviewed?
- Would you play the content without the achievement?
- How much would the DLC you genuinely want cost individually?
- Does the season pass include future content you are willing to prepay for?
- Would waiting for a sale improve the decision without harming your goal?
Bottom line for completionists
Steam achievements are a poor reason to buy content you do not want. They are a useful tie-breaker when the underlying expansion already interests you. Verify the game’s current achievement and DLC lists, distinguish released content from promises, compare the pass with the specific DLC you would play, and choose the smallest purchase that meets your actual completion goal.
