Should You Buy a Wi-Fi 8 Router Before It’s Available in the US?

For most US shoppers, no—not yet. If the Wi-Fi 8 label is your only reason to upgrade, wait for confirmed US availability and independent reviews. If your Wi-Fi needs fixing now, compare a currently available Wi-Fi 7 router with your home’s coverage needs, internet speed, wired connections and devices.

TP-Link opened preorders for its first announced Wi-Fi 8 router in select regions on September 30, 2026, but the United States was not on the launch list reported that day. Availability can change, so check current US listings rather than assuming the Archer 8 Ultra can be bought stateside.

Is a Wi-Fi 8 router available to preorder in the US?

Not according to the latest dated availability report here. On September 30, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that TP-Link’s Archer 8 Ultra preorders had opened in the UK, Germany, Australia and other markets, while the US was absent. That is a snapshot, not a guarantee about later availability; verify local stock, price and seller terms before making a purchase decision.

TP-Link announced the Archer 8 Ultra BN19000, also identified as Archer BN800, and the Deco 8 Ultra BN22000, also identified as Deco BN85, on September 1, 2026. The company listed the Deco 8 mesh system for Q1 2027 and its Roam 8 travel router, range extenders and adapters for Q2 2027, while cautioning that timing, specifications and regions may change. Those are roadmap targets, not confirmed US release dates. See TP-Link’s announcement for its product details and roadmap.

When will Wi-Fi 8 routers arrive in the US?

No confirmed US retail date is established. Wi-Fi 8 is the consumer name associated with IEEE P802.11bn, also called Ultra High Reliability. The IEEE 802.11 Working Group timeline lists the project at draft D2.00 and records a 77% result dated September 2, 2026. That percentage describes a standards-process result, not router performance. The timeline’s planned milestones extend through May 2028, and those dates are estimates that can change.

Qualcomm says final IEEE approval is expected in 2028 and Wi-Fi Alliance certification is projected for January 2028. These are forecasts, not fixed deadlines or promises of US retail availability. Early products can be announced or sold regionally while standardization and certification continue.

What could Wi-Fi 8 improve—and what is not proven yet?

Wi-Fi 8’s stated emphasis is reliability and consistency in difficult conditions, rather than a guaranteed speed boost in every home. TP-Link says the Archer 8 Ultra uses features including Enhanced Long Range, Distributed Resource Units, Non-Primary Channel Access, Unequal Modulation, and new modulation and coding schemes to target edge coverage, congestion handling and performance under interference. These are the manufacturer’s intended benefits, not independent findings.

TP-Link specifies up to 19 Gbps aggregate wireless speed and 10 Gbps wired connectivity for the Archer 8 Ultra. Those are maker-stated specifications, not a prediction of the speed a household will experience. Tom’s Hardware also reported TP-Link’s claim of up to 33% more real-world throughput and 24% more consistent throughput in high interference; that claim is not an independent test result.

No independent hands-on test of the Archer 8 Ultra is established here, so there is not enough evidence to say it outperforms a Wi-Fi 7 router in a comparable home. A router’s advertised aggregate wireless capacity also does not by itself establish the speeds individual devices will reach.

Should you buy Wi-Fi 7 now or wait for Wi-Fi 8?

Choose based on the problem you need to solve, not the generation number alone. A Wi-Fi 7 router available now may be the practical option if weak coverage, congestion or an aging router is affecting you. Waiting makes more sense if your current setup works and you would be buying Wi-Fi 8 mainly to get the newest label.

  • Coverage: Identify where connections drop or slow down, and consider whether your home’s layout calls for a single router or a mesh system.
  • Devices: Check which Wi-Fi generations your phones, computers, TVs and other clients support. Qualcomm says Wi-Fi 8 is intended to be backward compatible with Wi-Fi 7 and earlier generations, but compatibility alone does not establish that an older device will perform better.
  • Internet service and wired ports: Match WAN and LAN connections to your internet plan and any wired equipment. A router’s maximum stated port or wireless capacity cannot raise the speed supplied by your internet service.
  • Local purchase terms: Before ordering, confirm US availability, the actual price, return window and support coverage for the specific model and seller.
  • Independent testing: Look for reviews that measure stability, coverage and latency under conditions relevant to your home, rather than relying only on launch claims.

What to do before buying

  1. If you need an upgrade now, compare currently sold Wi-Fi 7 routers against your layout, internet tier, wired-port needs and client devices.
  2. If you are considering Wi-Fi 8, wait for a confirmed US listing and verify region-specific price, stock, support and return terms.
  3. Before paying a premium, look for independent, comparable tests of coverage, latency and stability—and check that your own devices can use the features that matter to you.
