Buy now if there’s a current game, friend group, or existing library that makes one console the clear fit. Wait if your current system still does the job. As of October 7, 2026, official announcements do not provide a consumer launch date for either company’s next-generation console. Microsoft plans to send Project Helix developer alpha hardware beginning in 2027; that is not a retail launch window. Sony said it had made no decisions about next-generation timing or pricing.
PS5 or Xbox Series X: which should you buy now?
Start with the games you actually want to play, then consider where your friends play and what you already own. A console’s headline specifications matter less if its library or ecosystem does not fit you. Before buying, check the game’s current platform listing and, for multiplayer, whether it supports cross-play with your friends’ systems.

- Choose the PS5 if the specific PlayStation games you want—or the people you play with—make it the better match.
- Choose the Xbox Series X if your Xbox library and ecosystem are the stronger fit. Microsoft lists compatibility with Xbox One games and select Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles; compatibility is not universal, so check individual games.
- Consider either console’s disc model if you own physical games or want the flexibility of discs. Confirm the exact model and game features before assuming a disc can be replaced by a digital entitlement.
- Wait if you have no pressing game to play and your current console or PC is still serving you well.
Neither platform has a blanket advantage for every buyer. The current game catalog is broad, and the available announcements do not establish a complete title-by-title comparison. For example, Xbox’s January 2026 announcement listed Fable for Xbox Series X|S and PS5, and Forza Horizon 6 for Xbox and PC first, with a later PS5 release planned. Those are announced plans, not guarantees; verify each game’s current platforms before deciding. Xbox’s January 2026 game announcement.

Physical games and existing discs
Microsoft says a digital entitlement feature supports most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games, but not every title was supported at launch. That feature is not evidence that a digital library universally replaces the disc: check the specific game and console model before relying on it. Storage and backward compatibility
Microsoft lists the Series X with a 1 TB custom SSD and backward compatibility. Its product page also claims up to 120 FPS and 12 teraflops; those specifications do not mean every game runs at 4K or 120 FPS. Check the exact console model and the requirements for any storage expansion before buying an accessory. Microsoft’s Series X specifications.
PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro is a higher-priced option for buyers who value enhanced visuals in supported games and can justify the extra cost. Sony says PS5 Pro enhancements are available only in selected games and vary by title; do not assume every game receives the same improvement. Sony lists a 2 TB SSD for the Pro. Microsoft Project Helix
Microsoft describes Project Helix as a next-generation first-party Xbox console designed to play Xbox console and PC games, using a custom AMD system-on-chip. Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald wrote that the company plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That milestone concerns developer hardware; Microsoft’s announcement does not establish the final consumer product’s name, specifications, price, or retail launch date. Sony’s next platform
Sony’s 2026 Corporate Strategy and Earnings Announcement Presentation Q&A said that “no decisions have been made regarding timing or pricing” for next-generation platforms. That is the company’s position in that Q&A, not a promise about when it will announce or release a successor. Sony’s investor presentation and Q&A materials.

Xbox said in June 2026 that storage and memory costs had risen more than 2.5 times and expected another doubling by fall 2027. A separate Xbox strategy post said it expected storage costs by the 2027 holiday season to exceed five times the prices it paid two years earlier. These are Xbox’s statements and expectations, not independently verified forecasts of future console prices or availability. Xbox’s June 2026 price notice; Xbox’s June 2026 strategy post.
There is no reliable way to calculate from these announcements how long a buyer would wait, what the next consoles would cost, or how large their improvements would be. Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden’s suggestion that consumers might balk at a hypothetical $1,000 console with incremental improvements is an opinion, not a price announcement or forecast. GamesRadar+’s October 2026 report on Layden’s comments.
Quick Recap
A practical buy-now-or-wait decision
- Name your must-play games. Check each game’s current supported platforms on its official listing. For multiplayer, verify cross-play title by title.
- Account for what you already own. List your digital games, discs, and relevant accessories, then confirm compatibility for the specific console and titles you plan to use.
- Compare local total costs. Check the exact model, checkout price, games, storage, and subscription terms in your country. Do not assume the US reference prices above apply elsewhere.
- Decide whether waiting has a real benefit for you. If your current system works and nothing you want requires an upgrade now, waiting avoids buying a console merely because of uncertainty about successors. If you want to play now, the successor announcements provide no confirmed retail date that makes waiting a predictable short-term choice.
