Buy now if your current phone is broken, unreliable, unsupported, unsafe, or no longer handles an essential task—and you can verify a suitable replacement at an acceptable total cost. Wait only when your phone remains dependable and you have a specific trigger, such as a confirmed sale, an official launch date, or a target price.
Waiting does not guarantee a discount or better stock. Forecasts published in 2026 point to price pressure and supply uncertainty, but they cannot predict the price, financing terms, or inventory at your local retailer.

What the 2026 evidence actually says
Several market reports point in the same broad direction—higher costs and tighter conditions—but their measurements are different. They are forecasts, surveys, shipment reports, or company-reported activity, not a live quote for a particular phone in your country.

| Counterpoint Research, September 11, 2026 | 14.3% projected decline in the global smartphone market during 2026, described as the steepest annual contraction on record | A weaker market does not automatically produce lower shelf prices. Counterpoint also says memory shortages are putting significant pressure on phones below $200 and meaningful pressure on the $200–$600 range; phones above $600 are more resilient because of financing, trade-ins, ecosystem attachment, and supplier access. |
| Counterpoint Research, October 8, 2026 | 63% of surveyed people planning to buy within six months had noticed device-price increases; 50% planned to buy during a festive sale or holiday season | This is a global survey, not a forecast for your country. It shows that shoppers are noticing increases and often timing purchases around sales. |
| Counterpoint Research, October 8, 2026 release, citing its Global Smartphone Price Hike Report | Forecast of a 20% average worldwide increase for existing models by the end of 2026 and up to 30% year over year for new launches | These are Counterpoint forecasts. They do not establish that every model or retailer will rise by those amounts. |
| Omdia, May 27, 2026 (United States, Q1) | 33.4 million smartphone shipments, down 3% year over year | Omdia said carriers were using financing, promotions, and plan-linked offers to manage affordability while manufacturer prices rose. Shipment data does not equal the price you will be offered. |
| Omdia, May 27, 2026 (United States, Q1) | $800-plus segment down 1%; sub-$300 up 8%; $300–$599 down 19%; $600–$799 down 6% | Demand differed by price tier in one market and quarter. It is not a universal ranking of value or a prediction for another region. |
| Assurant, June 16, 2026 | $1.63 billion returned to consumers through mobile trade-ins in Q1 2026, up 31% year over year; average traded-in device age was 3.81 years | Trade-ins are a substantial way to reduce an upgrade bill, but your final quote depends on your exact device, condition, and market. |
| Gartner, February 26, 2026 | Forecast of an 8.4% global shipment decline and a 13% price increase in 2026 versus 2025 | This is a separate forecast from Counterpoint’s later estimates. Do not combine the percentages into a single consensus number. |
Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak summarized the cost pressure this way: “Rising memory costs are pushing smartphone prices higher, leaving OEMs with limited room to absorb the impact.” Omdia Senior Analyst Eric Chen said the US market “did not experience a broad demand shock in Q1 2026.” Those comments explain why a falling shipment total can coexist with expensive phones and aggressive carrier financing.

Buy now when your current phone creates a real cost or risk
A phone that fails at the wrong moment can cost more than a planned upgrade. Buying now is usually justified when one or more of these conditions applies:
- Reliability is deteriorating: repeated shutdowns, charging failures, overheating, damaged ports, failing buttons, or a battery that cannot last through normal use.
- Security support has ended: the manufacturer no longer supplies security updates for your model, leaving work, banking, or personal accounts exposed.
- An essential function is missing: your phone cannot run a required work app, authenticate accounts, support a needed network band, or provide adequate storage and accessibility features.
- Damage is unsafe or uneconomical: a swollen battery, badly cracked glass, liquid damage, or a repair estimate close to the cost of a supported replacement changes the calculation.
- A verified offer is already good enough: the exact model is in stock, compatible with your network, covered by a clear warranty and return policy, and affordable after every required cost is included.
Urgency should not eliminate comparison. If the phone is failing, compare at least one new unlocked option, one carrier offer, and one reputable refurbished alternative that can arrive before the old phone becomes unusable.
Wait when the phone is adequate and the trigger is concrete
Waiting is sensible when your current phone remains secure, reliable, and capable of your daily tasks. The important word is concrete. “Prices might fall” is not a plan because current evidence does not identify a dependable future discount date.

Useful reasons to wait
- A retailer or carrier has announced a sale with an end date and you can tolerate the wait.
- An official new-model launch date is confirmed, and you want to compare the new phone with likely discounts on the outgoing generation.
- You have a target total price and a way to monitor it across the retailers you can actually use.
- You expect a known personal event—such as a contract end or trade-in eligibility date—that materially changes your cost.
Set a stop condition
Write down the date, target price, and minimum requirements that define a successful wait. Recheck the decision if the current phone develops a safety problem, loses essential support, or becomes incompatible with a required service. A wait without a stop condition can turn a manageable purchase into an emergency purchase made under worse terms.
Compare total cost, not the advertised monthly payment
The cheapest-looking offer can be the most expensive after a long financing term, an expensive plan, or a forfeited bill credit. Calculate the amount you will actually pay from the day of purchase until the phone is yours or the financing ends.
| Purchase route | Include in the calculation | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Unlocked, new phone | Phone price, sales tax or VAT, shipping, accessories you genuinely need, and any activation fee | Is the model compatible with your local network bands, eSIM or SIM format, and warranty region? What is the return window? |
| Carrier financing or promotion | Every device installment, required plan for the full term, activation or upgrade fees, taxes, insurance you choose, and the value of any bill credits | Do credits stop if you leave, pay off early, change plans, or miss a payment? Is the phone locked, and when can it be unlocked? Must the old phone be in a particular condition? |
| Trade-in | New-phone cost minus the final accepted trade-in value, plus shipping or inspection risk and any time-limited credit | Is the quoted amount guaranteed or conditional on inspection? What happens if the device is rejected or valued lower than the estimate? |
| Refurbished or used | Purchase price, shipping, tax, battery or replacement-part risk, and possible repair cost | What grade does the seller use? Is battery health stated? How long is the warranty, and who pays return shipping? |
For a simple comparison, use: total cost = all payments and required fees − guaranteed credits − realistic trade-in value. Keep optional services—insurance, extra storage, cases, and accessories—in a separate line so they do not hide the phone’s price.

How to evaluate a carrier offer step by step
- Record the cash price. Write down the unlocked price of the same storage configuration before looking at the monthly figure.
- Multiply the installment. Multiply the advertised device payment by the complete financing term. Add taxes and fees that are charged upfront or monthly.
- Price the required plan. Compare the plan you would otherwise choose with the plan required for the promotion. Multiply the difference by every month of the term.
- Model the credits. Treat promotional bill credits as conditional. Read the rules for leaving the carrier, changing plans, early payoff, missed payments, and device damage.
- Check lock and compatibility rules. Confirm when the phone can be unlocked, which networks it supports, and whether an imported variant has different bands or warranty coverage.
- Calculate the exit cost. Determine what you would owe if you moved, upgraded, or lost eligibility halfway through the term. Compare that number with buying unlocked.
Omdia’s US Q1 2026 reporting shows why these offers are common: carriers were using financing, promotions, and plan-linked subsidies to manage affordability while manufacturer prices rose. The presence of a promotion does not make it cheaper for every customer.

Trade-ins can lower the bill, but the quote is personal
Assurant reported $1.63 billion in consumer value returned through mobile trade-in programs during Q1 2026, up 31% year over year. Its average traded-in device was 3.81 years old; the iPhone 13 was the most traded-in Apple model and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra led among Android devices. These figures show the scale of the channel, not the value of your handset.
Before sending a phone
- Obtain a written quote that states the condition assumptions and expiration date.
- Back up photos, messages, authenticator codes, and eSIM details.
- Sign out of account locks, disable device-finding features, remove payment cards, and erase the phone only after the backup is verified.
- Photograph the device, serial number, and packaging before shipment.
- Keep the tracking receipt until the final credit appears.
Compare the guaranteed trade-in amount with the phone’s private-sale value only if you are willing to handle buyer screening, shipping, fraud risk, and a potentially longer sale. A larger headline credit is not necessarily better if it requires a more expensive plan or a long lock-in period.

When refurbished or used is the better answer
Gartner said rising costs could lead buyers to choose refurbished or second-hand phones or keep their existing devices longer. A pre-owned phone can make waiting unnecessary, especially when newer models offer only incremental improvements, but condition and support matter more than the listing title.
Refurbished-phone checklist
- Software support: identify the exact model and release region, then verify how many security and operating-system updates remain.
- Network compatibility: check supported bands, 4G and 5G capabilities, SIM or eSIM support, and carrier certification where required.
- Condition: look for a defined grading system, disclosed screen and frame damage, camera and microphone testing, and a stated battery-health policy.
- Warranty and returns: confirm the warranty length, exclusions, return window, restocking charges, and who pays return shipping.
- Parts and authenticity: ask whether batteries, displays, or other components were replaced and whether warnings may appear after a repair.
- Included items: verify whether a charger, cable, or original packaging is included rather than assuming it is.
A low purchase price is not a saving if the phone has little software support left or needs a battery immediately. Add a realistic repair reserve to the total-cost calculation.

Availability: what you can and cannot infer
Global forecasts and US shipment reports cannot tell you whether a particular store has your preferred color, storage tier, or network variant. Stock can vary by country, city, retailer, carrier, and day. A model may be available online but delayed locally, or available through a carrier only with a plan restriction.

For an urgent purchase, confirm the exact model number, storage capacity, delivery date, return terms, and warranty region before paying. If you can wait, monitor at least two independent sellers and record delivered prices rather than relying on a banner that says “sale.” Do not assume a new launch will improve supply immediately; launch demand can make popular configurations harder to obtain.
A practical decision framework
| Your situation | Default action | Next verification |
|---|---|---|
| Phone is unsafe, unsupported, or failing an essential task | Buy soon | Compare an unlocked, carrier, and refurbished total cost; prioritize verified stock and support. |
| Phone works, but battery life is declining | Price a battery replacement before replacing the phone | Compare the repair cost and remaining support with the cost of a supported replacement. |
| Phone works and no deadline exists | Wait with a written trigger | Set a target price, confirmed sale or launch date, and a date to reassess. |
| Only a carrier promotion appears affordable | Buy only after full-term math | Check plan cost, credit conditions, lock status, and early-exit liability. |
| New models are too expensive | Consider refurbished or last-generation stock | Verify condition, battery policy, warranty, network compatibility, and remaining updates. |
Common mistakes that make waiting or buying costlier
- Waiting for an unnamed “better deal.” Without a price or date, you cannot tell whether the wait succeeded.
- Comparing different storage tiers. A lower headline price may be for a materially smaller configuration.
- Counting a conditional credit as cash. Treat it as zero until you understand every condition and your ability to remain eligible.
- Ignoring support life. A cheap phone with little update coverage can create an earlier replacement cost.
- Assuming global news predicts local pricing. Forecast percentages and survey results are not local quotes.
- Sending a trade-in before securing the replacement. Keep a working backup or confirm delivery and return rights first.
- Buying an incompatible import. Check model number, radio bands, SIM format, emergency-calling support, and warranty region.
What the forecasts mean for “Should I wait for prices to drop?”
The available evidence supports caution, not certainty. Counterpoint’s September and October analyses describe memory-related pressure and forecast substantial increases; Gartner’s February forecast also projected higher prices and fewer shipments. Their percentages differ because they were produced at different times with different methods. None establishes a reliable date when phones will become cheaper.
If your phone is fine, waiting for a defined event can protect you from buying immediately before a confirmed launch or sale. If your phone is not fine, the risk of failure, lost access, or an unsafe battery can outweigh a speculative future discount. Decide using the verified total cost and your phone’s remaining reliability, not a market headline alone.
