If you need a reliable computer soon, buy when you find a system that meets your workload and total budget. Waiting specifically for RAM prices to fall is not a dependable strategy: TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook projects further increases in memory contract prices during the fourth quarter and says PC DRAM supply could shrink in 2027 as manufacturers prioritize server products. If your current computer still works and the purchase is optional, waiting can make sense—but use a review date and compare complete systems rather than betting on a known future discount.
What the current memory forecasts actually say
The available forecasts point to continued supply pressure, not a confirmed date for cheaper consumer RAM. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook projects conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. It also projects NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter in that period. These are negotiated component-market prices, not quotes for a retail memory kit or a finished laptop.

TrendForce says advanced-process capacity is being directed toward high-performance server products, leaving the overall memory market undersupplied. For PC DRAM, it reports that higher component costs are moving through notebook inventories and weakening end-market sales, while PC manufacturers continue procuring because they expect supply to remain tight in 2027. The outlook says PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as suppliers move additional capacity to servers.
Gartner’s February 2026 forecast describes a broader device effect. Gartner estimates that combined DRAM and SSD prices could be 130% higher by the end of 2026 than in 2025 and forecasts PC prices 17% higher in 2026 than in 2025. Gartner also forecasts worldwide PC shipments falling 10.4% in 2026 compared with 2025 and consumer PC lifetimes increasing 20% by the end of 2026 as buyers postpone replacements. Those are Gartner estimates and forecasts, not measured changes for every model, country, or retailer.

TrendForce’s earlier July 3 outlook had projected 3Q26 conventional DRAM contract prices up 13–18% and NAND Flash up 10–15% quarter over quarter. It also anticipated higher notebook prices as component costs passed through inventories. The September outlook is newer and is the better guide to 4Q26; neither outlook establishes a retail price or a date when a particular RAM kit will become cheaper.
Why a RAM forecast cannot tell you the price of your next PC
A finished computer’s price includes much more than memory. Manufacturers can change CPU, graphics, storage, display, battery, cooling, chassis, warranty, inventory, margins, and promotions while component costs are changing. A system with a higher memory cost might still be discounted, while a model with inexpensive memory could rise in price because another part is scarce.
Contract pricing also reaches products at different times. A manufacturer may have inventory purchased under an earlier agreement, hedge supply, alter the amount of RAM fitted to a model, or absorb part of an increase to protect a product category. Retailers in different countries face different taxes, currencies, shipping costs, and stock levels. Therefore, a contract-market forecast can indicate risk without predicting the checkout price of a specific desktop or laptop.
Buy now when waiting has a real cost
Your current computer is failing
Unexpected shutdowns, storage errors, overheating, damaged hinges, swollen batteries, or repeated operating-system crashes can turn waiting into lost work and emergency spending. If the machine is unreliable, price uncertainty is usually less important than having a dependable replacement and time to migrate your files properly.

Work, school, or accessibility depends on a replacement
If you need the computer for a fixed start date, client work, examinations, or software that no longer runs acceptably, buy before the deadline. Allow time for delivery, setup, updates, account sign-ins, backups, and returning a defective unit. A theoretical future saving is not useful if it leaves you without a working device.
You have found a suitable complete system within budget
Judge the actual configuration, not the RAM line alone. A system that has the CPU, graphics capability, storage, ports, display, warranty, and upgrade path your workload needs can be a good purchase even if memory is not at its historical low. Confirm that the advertised price is available in your region and is not dependent on a short-lived bundle or financing condition.
The cost of delay exceeds possible savings
Include lost productivity, temporary repairs, rental equipment, data-recovery risk, and the time required to find another machine. Continued component-cost pressure means waiting may not produce a lower price, and the sources provide no date on which a reduction is expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWait and monitor when the purchase is discretionary
Your existing PC is still adequate
Waiting is reasonable when current applications run at acceptable speed, storage is healthy, the battery or power supply is safe, and the computer receives necessary security updates. Make a backup and keep a small repair reserve so that a sudden fault does not force a rushed purchase.

You can tolerate price and configuration uncertainty
Do not wait with the assumption that a specific RAM price will fall in a particular month. Instead, choose a review date—such as the start of a new quarter—and reassess actual local listings. Compare similarly configured systems because a lower headline price may include less memory, a weaker processor, a smaller SSD, or limited upgradeability.
You are waiting for a meaningful product change
Waiting has a clearer purpose when you need a known capability, such as a required software feature, a particular port, a new processor generation, or a form factor that is not yet available. That is a product-timing decision, not a RAM-price bet. Keep the criteria specific so that you can buy when a suitable system appears.
Check whether an upgrade or repair solves the problem
Gartner expects people to keep PCs longer as prices rise, and extending the life of a usable computer can cost less than replacing it. However, compatibility and labor costs are specific to your machine. Do not buy a memory kit until the manufacturer documentation or motherboard manual confirms the memory type, capacity limit, module layout, speed support, and whether an available slot exists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Define the actual bottleneck. Use the operating system’s resource monitor during your normal workload. High memory use with frequent paging suggests a RAM constraint; a constantly busy processor, graphics chip, or storage drive points elsewhere.
- Record the installed configuration. Note the number of modules, capacity, memory generation, and supported maximum. Laptop memory may be soldered, and some compact desktops use nonstandard modules.
- Check compatibility in official documentation. Verify module type, voltage, capacity per slot, firmware requirements, and whether mixing modules is supported. A nominally faster kit may run at a lower supported speed, while incompatible modules may prevent booting.
- Compare total upgrade cost. Include the memory, shipping, technician labor if needed, and the value of your time. Compare that total with a replacement that includes a faster processor, newer storage, and a warranty.
- Test and back up. Back up important data before opening the computer. After installation, confirm the full capacity is recognized and run the system’s memory diagnostic or another trusted test.
An upgrade is most attractive when the processor and storage already meet your needs and the machine has a supported, accessible memory path. Replacement is more sensible when memory is soldered, the battery or storage is failing, the operating system is nearing the end of support, or several components are inadequate.

Compare complete PCs instead of isolated RAM prices
Use the same workload and ownership period for every option. A low initial price can become expensive if the computer needs an immediate memory or storage upgrade.
| Comparison area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Urgency | What happens if the purchase is delayed by one, three, or six months? |
| Total price | What is the delivered price after tax, shipping, required upgrades, and accessories? |
| Memory | How much RAM is installed, in how many modules, and can it be expanded later? |
| Processor and graphics | Do they meet the requirements of your applications, games, creative work, or virtual machines? |
| Storage | Is the SSD capacity sufficient, and is a second drive or replacement possible? |
| Support | What warranty, repair route, parts availability, and return period apply in your region? |
| Useful life | Will the system remain adequate for the number of years you expect to keep it? |
For a desktop, account for the monitor, operating system license if applicable, keyboard, mouse, Wi-Fi, and a reliable power supply. For a laptop, weigh memory upgradeability against portability, battery health, screen quality, keyboard, webcam, and charger replacement. A desktop may offer cheaper future upgrades, while a laptop’s soldered memory can make the original configuration decisive.

- Set the need date. Write down the latest date by which the computer must be dependable.
- Describe the workload. List the applications and files you use, not just a desired RAM number. Requirements differ between office work, coding, media production, gaming, and professional analysis.
- Assess the current machine. Check reliability, security support, battery or power condition, storage health, and whether a compatible upgrade is available.
- Collect comparable listings. Record complete specifications, delivered price, warranty, return terms, and upgrade details for systems that genuinely meet the workload.
- Calculate the cost of waiting. Include repairs, downtime, temporary equipment, and the risk of an emergency purchase.
- Choose a trigger. Buy when a suitable system fits the budget, or set a firm reassessment date if you can safely wait. Do not leave the decision open-ended.
- Recheck before ordering. Confirm the exact RAM configuration, storage, operating system, warranty region, delivery date, and return policy on the final listing.
What the 2027 supply outlook means for your decision
TrendForce’s expectation of tighter PC DRAM supply in 2027 is a risk factor, not a guarantee that every PC will become more expensive. Server demand, manufacturing capacity, product mix, exchange rates, inventory, and retailer promotions can change the result. It does mean that waiting solely for relief in memory pricing has no evidence-based deadline.
Gartner’s forecast that consumer PC lifetimes could lengthen by 20% by the end of 2026 reflects buyers keeping existing systems longer as prices rise. That may be sensible for a healthy computer, but postponing a failing machine increases operational risk. Gartner also forecasts that the sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028; this is Gartner’s forecast, not a settled outcome, and it should not be treated as a promise about any particular budget model.
Best Value
- Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
- Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
- Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
- Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback
- Design: Sleek desktop tower with black color and slim profile for modern look
Mistakes that make the timing decision worse
- Confusing contract prices with retail prices: a supplier forecast does not specify your local checkout price.
- Watching RAM alone: a cheaper kit cannot compensate for an unsuitable processor, graphics system, display, storage device, or warranty.
- Buying the smallest configuration to save money: a non-upgradeable laptop can make an apparently cheap purchase costly if your workload grows.
- Ignoring regional terms: taxes, currency, shipping, returns, and warranty coverage can outweigh a small component-price difference.
- Waiting without a date: indefinite postponement can turn a controlled purchase into an emergency replacement.
- Assuming an upgrade is universal: soldered memory, capacity limits, firmware restrictions, and labor can make an upgrade impractical.
The bottom line for different buyers
Buy now
Buy now if the computer is failing, your deadline is close, or a complete system that meets your needs is affordable today. The market outlook does not offer a reliable near-term RAM discount to wait for.
Wait and monitor
Wait if the current PC is safe and capable, the purchase is optional, and you can tolerate uncertain pricing. Set a review date and track complete-system configurations rather than a single memory component.
Upgrade or repair
Upgrade or repair when the current processor, storage, and software support are adequate and official documentation confirms a compatible, cost-effective fix. Replace the system when several major components or the platform itself are limiting you.
