For most buyers in 2026, a used electric Smart is the only realistic fortwo option. Production of the electric smart fortwo ended in March 2024, the final new cars were delivered in July 2024, and the model is no longer available to order new. Existing EQ fortwo and EQ forfour cars can still make sense as inexpensive urban runabouts, but their small battery, limited motorway ability and AC-only charging rule out many longer-distance uses.
Choose a used EQ fortwo if you need an exceptionally short two-seater for town driving, easy parking and a second car. Choose the EQ forfour if you genuinely need four seats. If you regularly drive on motorways, take long trips or depend on rapid DC charging, look at another electric vehicle. Smart says a new smart #2 is planned for a world premiere at the end of 2026, with market arrival expected the following year, but its price and specification have not been published.

Can you still buy a new electric Smart fortwo?
No. Smart ended fortwo production in March 2024, and the last new examples were delivered in July 2024. ADAC also records the EQ as unavailable new after mid-2024. In 2026, a dealer listing described as “new” would therefore be old stock or a previously registered car, not a current-production fortwo order.

Smart’s current range page lists newer models called the #1, #3 and #5. Those are different, larger vehicles, so their range, charging hardware, dimensions and prices cannot be inferred from the EQ fortwo. Smart has announced a future #2, with a world premiere planned for the end of 2026 and market arrival the following year. No UK price, battery specification or delivery timetable beyond that broad plan has been published.

Which electric Smart cars are available used?
EQ fortwo
The EQ fortwo is the two-seat city car. It was sold from 2017 until production ended in 2024, in coupé and cabriolet forms. Its tiny footprint is its defining advantage: it is easy to place on narrow streets and simple to park in spaces that a conventional hatchback cannot use. The compromise is that there are only two seats and very little luggage capacity.
EQ forfour
The EQ forfour uses the same electric drivetrain but adds two rear seats. It was sold from 2017 and ended production in 2022. The rear seats make it more useful for short local trips with passengers, although the cabin and boot remain small. A forfour is not simply a larger-range version; it has the same battery and motor specification as the fortwo.

The battery and motor figures above are published by EVGuide.uk in 2026. Battery capacity is modest by current-EV standards, but it keeps the car light and suits short daily journeys.
How far does a Smart EQ really go?
Published figures are 84 miles for the EQ fortwo and 81 miles for the EQ forfour. Those are official test-cycle values, not a guarantee of the distance you will see on the dashboard in every season. ADAC’s 2024 Ecotest measured 100 km (about 62 miles) for the EQ fortwo under its test conditions.

For everyday town driving, EVGuide’s 2026 guidance puts typical real-world range at about 60–80 miles in summer and 45–60 miles in winter. Cold weather, cabin heating, higher speeds, hills, a heavily loaded car and an ageing battery can all reduce the available distance. Treat the lower end of those ranges as the planning figure if you cannot charge at your destination.
- Urban summer use: roughly 60–80 miles is a realistic expectation.
- Urban winter use: roughly 45–60 miles is typical.
- Motorway use: expect the least favourable result because speed increases energy consumption; the car’s small battery leaves little reserve.
- Used-car variation: the displayed full-charge estimate depends on recent driving and battery condition, so it is not a battery-health certificate.
This makes the EQ most comfortable as a local commuter, school-run car or second vehicle. A driver covering 20–30 miles a day can have ample margin, while someone travelling 70 miles each way will need a different type of EV.
Charging: what the EQ can and cannot do
The EQ fortwo and forfour charge using AC. They do not have DC rapid-charging capability, so you cannot use a high-power motorway rapid charger to add energy quickly in the way many newer EVs can.

Check the charging equipment before buying
- Confirm that the car has the optional 22 kW AC charger.
- Confirm that a compatible Type 2 charging cable is included and inspect its plug, pins and insulation.
- Plug the car in during your test drive rather than relying on the seller’s statement that it charges.
- Watch that charging starts and continues without an error message or interruption.
Charging faults are a commonly reported ownership concern. A successful demonstration is not a substitute for a professional inspection, but a failure to start charging is an immediate reason to pause the purchase until the cause and repair cost are known.
What does a used electric Smart cost?
EVGuide.uk’s 2026 sample gives UK median asking prices for EQ fortwo coupés. These are advertised prices, not completed-sale values, so the final transaction can be lower or higher depending on mileage, specification, condition and seller.

Forfour examples in the same guide were about £7,445 for a 2020 car and £7,248 for a 2021 car. The apparent difference from fortwo prices does not establish a universal market premium or discount; it reflects the examples in that sample.
Compare cars by first-registration date, mileage, battery warranty remaining, charger specification and condition rather than by model year alone. A newer car with a weak battery or missing cable can be a worse purchase than an older, documented example.

Battery warranty and battery-health evidence
Smart UK’s warranty terms provide an eight-year battery warranty capped at 125,000 miles for the battery itself. Replacement eligibility is tied to a measured state of health below 70%, subject to the conditions in the warranty terms. The clock starts from the car’s first registration, so a used vehicle may have only part of the cover left.
Smart UK’s standard vehicle warranty term is “3 years with unlimited mileage.” That general vehicle cover is separate from the battery warranty; do not treat the battery’s eight-year term as an eight-year comprehensive-car warranty.
What to request from the seller
- Ask for the first-registration date and current odometer reading.
- Calculate the remaining time and mileage against the eight-year/125,000-mile battery limit.
- Request a recent battery state-of-health printout from a suitable diagnostic service or dealer.
- Check that the report identifies the vehicle and gives a measured value, not just a dashboard range estimate.
- Read the warranty conditions and confirm where a qualifying battery claim would be assessed.
A state-of-health result below 70% may be relevant to warranty eligibility, but the terms and test procedure control the decision. A report above that threshold does not promise a particular driving range in winter or at motorway speeds.

Used Smart EQ inspection checklist
Identify the exact car
- Confirm whether it is a fortwo coupé, fortwo cabrio or forfour.
- Record the first-registration date, mileage and number of previous keepers.
- Check that the registration and vehicle-identification details match the paperwork.
Test charging and electrical systems
- Verify whether the optional 22 kW AC charger is fitted.
- Make sure the Type 2 cable is present and undamaged.
- Connect to an AC point during the test drive and confirm that charging begins and remains active.
- Look for warning messages, charging interruptions or unexplained dashboard faults.
- Ask when the 12V battery was last replaced; an old 12V battery can cause electrical and charging-related problems.
Check history and condition
- Obtain service records and check that scheduled maintenance is documented.
- Run an accident and vehicle-history check.
- Check recall completion with Smart or an authorised service outlet.
- Inspect both keys, the charging cable, tyres, brakes, suspension and bodywork.
- Compare the full-charge range display with the car’s age, recent weather and the 45–80-mile real-world evidence; an unusually low figure deserves investigation.
Have an independent EV technician inspect the car if the seller cannot provide a battery report or if the test charge fails. The cost of an inspection is easier to budget than an unexplained battery or charging repair.

When a used EQ fortwo is the right choice
- You mostly drive in dense urban areas.
- You can charge at home, work or another dependable AC location.
- You normally travel well within a 45–60-mile winter planning range.
- You value a very small two-seater more than luggage space or long-distance comfort.
- You are comfortable checking battery health and remaining warranty before purchase.
When to choose the EQ forfour
The forfour is the logical used Smart when two seats are not enough. Its four-seat layout can cover short family or passenger trips, and used 2020–2021 examples were listed around £7,200–£7,500 in EVGuide’s sample. It still has the 17.6 kWh battery, 82 PS motor, AC-only charging and limited range, so adding seats does not make it a long-distance car.
When neither used EQ nor a future #2 is suitable
Choose another EV if your normal driving includes frequent motorway journeys, long inter-city trips, winter travel without charging stops, or a need for predictable rapid charging. The EQ’s absence of DC charging is a hardware limitation, not a software feature that can be added later.
Waiting for the planned #2 is reasonable only if you can postpone buying and accept uncertainty. Smart has announced the timing of its world premiere and intended market arrival, but has not announced the price, battery, range, charging performance or availability for your market. Do not reserve money on the assumption that it will match any particular EQ specification.

- Define the daily journey: write down your longest normal day, including winter and detours.
- Set a charging routine: identify where the car will receive AC energy and whether a 22 kW charger is actually useful at those locations.
- Choose the body: select fortwo for two occupants and maximum compactness; select forfour when the rear seats are essential.
- Screen listings: reject cars with unclear registration dates, missing cables, no service history or no willingness to demonstrate charging.
- Verify battery condition: obtain a state-of-health printout and check the remaining eight-year/125,000-mile cover.
- Test before paying: drive the car, plug it in, check warning lights and compare the displayed range with the season and your use.
The result is straightforward: a documented used EQ can be a sensible low-cost urban EV, while a “new” fortwo in 2026 is not a current-production purchase. Buy the used car only when its range, charging arrangement and battery evidence fit your actual routine.
