Buy at launch if you expect to play right away and value the release-day conversation, a spoiler-free window, or an active multiplayer community. Wait if the price strains your budget, you are unsure about the game, or your backlog gives you little reason to hurry. There is no reliable rule for how soon an unspecified game will go on sale.
When buying at launch makes sense
Paying full price can be worthwhile when the time you gain matters more than a possible future discount. Consider launch if:

- You are eager to play now and have time set aside for it.
- You want to experience the story before spoilers become common in your feeds or conversations.
- The game depends on a lively multiplayer population, and joining during the shared release period is part of the appeal.
- You have checked recent gameplay, reviews, and the launch condition and are comfortable with what you know.
These are reasons to value immediate access, not guarantees that a game will be stable, popular, or worth its price.

When waiting is the better choice
Waiting is sensible if the current price feels uncomfortable, you have other games you would rather play, or you want more information before committing. A delay gives you time to read player feedback, watch gameplay, and see how the developer responds to problems. It also avoids turning a purchase into an obligation to play immediately.

Do not treat a release delay as proof of quality. A peer-reviewed study of 23,485 Steam games found that 48% had a delayed initial release, with a median delay of 14 days; the difference in review rates between delayed and on-time games was negligible. The study does not show whether a particular game is stable at launch or whether its later patches improve it. Grewal, Lin, Doucet, and Bezemer, “An Empirical Study of Delayed Games on Steam” (2022).
How to decide for a specific game
- Set your price limit. Decide what you can comfortably spend before looking at launch promotions. Compare the current price with the game’s own price history where available; do not assume a discount is due on a particular date.
- Check what you are buying today. Read recent reviews and patch notes, and look at gameplay from the current version. Consider whether the game is complete, actively updated, or still changing.
- Ask whether timing adds value. Weigh immediate play, spoiler avoidance, and multiplayer activity against your budget and the games already waiting in your library.
- Check the store’s refund rules. Policies vary by platform, region, and purchase type. Do this before buying rather than relying on a later refund to correct a decision.
A launch discount is not, by itself, a reason to buy. A 2025 report from Big Games Machine, citing Gamalytic data, describes a limited effect of launch discounts on wishlist conversion and cautions that niche publishers who do not discount at launch may skew the result. That is a qualified finding about Steam-related behavior, not a prediction of what buyers or publishers will do for any particular game. Big Games Machine’s August 2025 report.

Early Access needs a different test
For an Early Access game, judge the version available now—not a promised future version. Valve’s customer guidance puts it plainly: “So you should only buy an Early Access game if you are excited about playing it in its current state.” If you would only want the finished game, wait until the features and condition you care about are actually available. Can you predict when a game will go on sale?
No dependable cross-platform timeline follows from the available evidence. Steam has discount rules and cooldowns, but a particular game’s sale timing and discount depend on its publisher and circumstances. Valve’s developer-facing guidance says, “Ultimately there is no one-size-fits-all solution to discounting.” Its suggestion of a 10%–15% launch discount is guidance for developers, not a forecast of savings or advice that a buyer should purchase. Wishlist the game on the store you plan to use and check its price history where available. These steps help you notice a price change; they cannot tell you when one will happen or how large it will be.

On Steam, a later sale does not automatically return the difference. Steam Support says it cannot refund the difference, but you may request a refund for the original purchase and buy again at the sale price if the purchase meets the current refund policy. Steam also says coupons or loyalty discounts generally do not stack with sale prices unless the offer says otherwise. Check the current rules for your account and region before relying on this option. Other PC stores, console stores, and retail purchases may have different policies.
