Should you buy a laptop now or wait for prices and stock to stabilize?

Buy now if a failing, unsupported or inadequate laptop is disrupting essential work or study. Wait if your current machine still meets your needs. There is no evidence-based date for laptop prices or inventory to “stabilize,” and 2027 shipment forecasts are conditional rather than promises of lower retail prices. Treat waiting as a flexibility choice, not a bet that a broad price drop is imminent.

What the latest market data actually shows

Several 2026 reports describe a pressured and uneven market, but they measure different regions, channels and time periods. Shipment figures count computers moving into distribution channels; they are not a direct reading of the stock or price of the exact laptop you want.

Source and period Measurement What it indicates
Gartner, worldwide 3Q26 preliminary estimate 55.4 million PCs shipped, down 22.4% year over year Higher memory and storage costs, vendor prioritization of scarce components and a shift toward higher-priced configurations. Gartner says lower-cost devices became less available. The figure covers Windows, macOS and Chrome OS desktops and laptops.
Omdia, US 2Q26 18.8 million PCs shipped, up 1.0% year over year; average sell-in price above $1,000, up 12.0% Retailers and channel partners built inventory ahead of anticipated increases. This is US sell-in data, not a global retail-price average.
TrendForce, global 2027 outlook Notebook shipments expected to decline by a low-single-digit percentage; potentially high-single-digit if DRAM and CPU costs stay elevated and are passed through A conditional shipment forecast, not a date or guarantee for consumer-price stabilization.

Gartner’s October 12, 2026 estimate captures a sharp third-quarter contraction after earlier inventory moves. Gartner principal analyst Namrata Banerjee said higher memory and storage costs were “fully reflected in PC pricing,” adding that DRAM costs had surged five times year over year in the second quarter. That statement describes the market’s cost pressure; it does not predict the price of every model.

TrendForce’s September 4 report adds an important timing detail: CPU supply improved markedly from the second quarter, while DRAM and SSD costs continued rising. Earlier procurement and demand pulled into the first half supported shipments, but lower-cost inventory is expected to deplete, exposing future products more directly to current component costs.

  • STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth

For a mainstream notebook with a US$900 manufacturer’s suggested retail price, TrendForce estimated that the CPU, DRAM and SSD together represented about 68% of bill-of-materials cost in 3Q26. That is a component-cost share, not a forecast that the laptop’s retail price will rise 68%; retail pricing also includes the display, chassis, battery, assembly, software, logistics, channel margins, warranty and taxes.

Omdia’s US result and Gartner’s later global result are not contradictory. They cover different quarters and geographies, and US buyers and businesses may have pulled purchases forward while global vendors later faced tighter low-cost configurations. The combined picture is choppy and segment-specific, not a universal claim that every laptop is either unavailable or getting more expensive.

The decision: replace a problem or preserve flexibility?

Use the condition of your current device as the first filter. A market forecast cannot compensate for lost work, missed classes or an unsupported operating system.

Buy now when failure has a real cost

  • Your laptop crashes, overheats, loses battery capacity rapidly or cannot stay connected during essential tasks.
  • It no longer receives the operating-system or security support your work, school or organization requires.
  • Your required applications exceed its processor, memory, graphics or storage capacity, and workarounds are slowing you down.
  • Repair would be uncertain or expensive relative to a replacement, especially if parts or qualified service are difficult to obtain.
  • You have a fixed deadline, such as a course, project or new job, and need time to configure and test a replacement.

Wait when your current laptop is still fit for purpose

  • It performs your actual workload reliably, has adequate battery life and remains within support timelines.
  • You are considering an upgrade mainly because of rumors about future models or a generalized fear of shortages.
  • You can defer the purchase without borrowing money, losing productivity or accepting a rushed configuration.
  • You are willing to monitor a specific model and buy if its price, stock and warranty become attractive rather than waiting for the entire market to normalize.

Waiting is therefore a risk-management decision. It gives you time to save, compare configurations and keep using a known-good machine. It does not come with a supported claim that prices will be lower on a particular date.

How to buy now without overpaying for the wrong machine

1. Write a workload and support brief

List the applications you use, the largest files you handle, the number of external displays, travel needs, battery expectations and the date through which you need vendor or operating-system support. Include compatibility requirements for peripherals and specialized software. This prevents a broad “fastest available” search from turning into an unnecessary premium.

2. Lock the requirements that affect daily use

  • Memory: choose enough for your applications and multitasking, with an upgrade path only if the model genuinely provides one. Soldered memory cannot be expanded later.
  • Storage: account for the operating system, applications, local projects and backups. A small drive can make an otherwise capable laptop frustrating; confirm whether the storage is replaceable.
  • Processor and graphics: match them to your sustained workload, not just a product-line name. Office, browser and programming work have different needs from 3D, video, engineering or gaming workloads.
  • Display and ergonomics: check size, resolution, brightness, refresh rate, keyboard layout, webcam quality, ports and weight. These characteristics are difficult to change after purchase.
  • Network and accessories: verify Wi-Fi generation, wired networking options, docking compatibility and charger specifications if your desk setup depends on them.

3. Compare the exact configuration

Record the full processor, memory, storage, display and operating-system configuration, plus the model identifier. Compare that same configuration across sellers and against its own recent price history. A lower advertised price can represent less memory, a smaller SSD, a dimmer display, a shorter warranty or a different regional keyboard.

4. Price the complete ownership decision

Include the warranty term, accidental-damage options you actually need, expected battery replacement, required dock or adapters, software licensing, delivery and return costs. HP’s buyer guidance also recommends weighing support, reliability, compatibility and the cost of operating an underpowered device. A slightly higher purchase price can be rational if it avoids an immediate upgrade or costly downtime.

5. Verify stock and returns before paying

“In stock” may mean a third-party listing, a delayed shipment or a configuration different from the headline model. Confirm the seller, estimated dispatch date, return window, restocking conditions and warranty region. Keep the packaging until you have checked the screen, keyboard, ports, battery behavior, sleep/wake operation and application compatibility.

How to wait intelligently

Set a trigger instead of an open-ended delay

Define the event that ends your wait: a maximum acceptable price for a specified configuration, a required discount from the model’s own history, a confirmed replacement date for your current laptop or a support deadline. Review at a fixed interval so that “waiting” does not become a last-minute emergency purchase.

Track availability at the configuration level

Watch the exact memory and storage combination you need. A market can have plenty of laptops while lacking the lower-cost configuration that fits your budget. Gartner’s observation that vendors prioritized scarce components and that lower-cost devices became less available makes configuration flexibility useful, but only when the substitute still meets your workload.

Use flexibility deliberately

Be flexible on nonessential features such as color, a small amount of extra storage or a refresh-rate premium if those concessions preserve the processor, memory, display quality and ports you actually require. Do not trade away a hard requirement merely to obtain a nominal discount.

Maintain the current machine

  • Back up important files and verify that you can restore them.
  • Keep the operating system, firmware and security software supported and updated.
  • Free storage space and remove failing peripherals that create avoidable instability.
  • Check battery health, cooling vents and charger condition.
  • Keep a recovery plan and a list of essential applications so a sudden failure does not force an impulsive purchase.

What “stabilization” could—and could not—mean

Stabilization might mean component costs stop rising, vendors restore a wider range of entry-level configurations, retailers rebuild inventory, or prices stop changing rapidly. Those events do not necessarily occur together. A manufacturer can hold a laptop’s list price while reducing memory, changing the display or limiting promotions; a retailer can have stock while the most desirable configuration remains scarce.

TrendForce’s 2027 outlook says global notebook shipments could fall by a low-single-digit percentage, or by a high-single-digit percentage if DRAM and CPU prices remain elevated and brands pass through more cost. It does not identify when prices will settle. Omdia separately forecasts a 10.7% decline in US PC shipments for 2026, while its second-quarter data showed average sell-in prices above $1,000. Shipment direction and price direction can diverge because inventory timing, product mix and channel behavior change.

Consequently, do not use a shipment forecast as a target date for a personal purchase. The relevant evidence is the live price, stock and warranty of the exact configuration you can buy.

AI-PC claims and future-proofing

HP’s current guidance recommends AI PCs for its small and midsize-business users so employees have neural-processing units (NPUs) for needs expected over the next two to three years. That is a vendor recommendation for an SMB audience, not a requirement for every consumer. Decide whether an NPU, local AI feature or specific software support matters to your workload; do not pay for a label without a use case. Also verify that the model’s memory, storage, ports and support life meet today’s needs, because a future-oriented processor cannot fix an unsuitable configuration.

Practical scenarios

Your laptop is failing before an exam or project

Buy a well-supported configuration now, prioritize delivery certainty and test it immediately. A theoretical future discount is worth less than a functioning, configured system before the deadline.

Your three-year-old laptop handles everything comfortably

Wait, back up your data and set a price trigger. Continue monitoring the exact configuration you want rather than assuming the market will announce a universal “stable” period.

Your current machine is usable but too slow for a growing workload

Measure the bottleneck first. If memory or storage is replaceable and an upgrade solves it, that may extend the useful life. If the processor, cooling system or software compatibility is the limiting factor, compare the total cost of upgrading with a replacement.

You need a lower-cost laptop and entry models keep disappearing

Recheck nonessential specifications and reputable configurations, but retain your minimum requirements for memory, storage, display and support. Gartner’s data indicates that low-cost availability has been particularly exposed to component pressure, so a strict requirement list may leave fewer acceptable choices.

A purchase-or-wait checklist

  • Does the current laptop block essential work, study or communication?
  • Is it within operating-system and security-support timelines?
  • Have you written the exact processor, memory, storage, display and port requirements?
  • Did you compare the identical configuration and its own price history?
  • Did you include warranty, accessories, software, repairs and downtime?
  • If waiting, did you set a review date and a maximum acceptable price?
  • Can you restore your files and continue working if the current laptop fails tomorrow?
