There is no dependable market-wide date when CPU prices will “settle.” Buy when the processor you need delivers the required performance at an acceptable total system cost. Wait only when the purchase is optional and the exact model’s recent price record, available alternatives, or a near-term budget target gives you a concrete reason to delay. A broad chip-price index, shipment report, rumor, or assumed sale date cannot predict the price of your particular listing.
What “wait for prices to settle” can—and cannot—mean
CPU prices do not move as one market. A recently launched desktop processor, an older model being cleared out, a popular gaming chip, and a processor in short supply can all follow different price paths. Even two listings for the same model can differ because of seller, stock, shipping, tax, warranty, and region.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That is why a category statistic is a poor timer for an individual purchase. ComponentPrices distinguishes manufacturing indexes from retail observations: a factory-price index is not the shelf price of a processor. Its matched Newegg record covers identifiable products on that retailer, excludes other retailers, and does not include shipping, tax, or completed used sales. It specifically warns against turning a broad factory index into a date on which a particular CPU will become cheaper.
The practical question is therefore not “Will CPU prices go down?” It is “Is this exact CPU, or a close alternative, a good value for my workload at the delivered price I can pay today?”

Start with the cost of waiting
Before looking at charts, classify the purchase. The same price movement can justify opposite decisions for different buyers.
Urgent replacement
If a work machine is failing, a system is unstable, or a CPU problem is blocking paid work, waiting for a speculative discount has a measurable cost. Downtime, lost projects, emergency buying, and temporary rental equipment can exceed a modest price difference. Confirm compatibility and buy the best suitable option that fits the budget you have now.
Performance-limited system
If games stutter, renders miss deadlines, or compilation and analysis jobs consume too much time, quantify the bottleneck. A faster processor that removes the bottleneck can repay a premium through time saved. Compare application or game benchmarks that resemble your actual workload rather than relying on a general ranking.
Optional upgrade
If your current computer is adequate and the purchase is discretionary, waiting is reasonable when the exact model is above its recent normal price, a close alternative offers better value, or your total build cost exceeds the budget. Set a price threshold and a review date instead of waiting indefinitely for a vague “settled” market.
Use model-level price evidence, not a market headline
What the current CPU index tells you
Tom’s Hardware’s U.S. CPU Price Index was updated October 2, 2026. It checks major online stores weekly and lists current lowest prices and lowest-ever prices for many desktop Intel Core Ultra and 13th- and 14th-Generation models, plus AMD Ryzen 9000, 7000, and 5000 series. This is useful for seeing whether a model is near its own observed low, but it remains a snapshot. A “lowest” listing can disappear when stock, seller, promotion, or fulfillment changes.

Use the index as a reference point, then open the actual listing you would purchase. Record the model number, whether it is boxed retail or another package, seller, stock status, delivery charge, tax, warranty, and return terms. A low headline price that lacks a cooler, carries a different warranty, or arrives from a seller you cannot return to is not directly comparable with a complete retail package.
Build a simple price record
- Identify the exact SKU. Write down the full model designation, suffix, socket, and package. Do not combine prices for different cores, cache sizes, integrated-graphics variants, or power limits.
- Capture today’s delivered price. Include shipping and tax for your location. Note the date and the seller.
- Check the model’s recent range. Compare the current figure with the lowest-ever and recent observed prices in a model-level tracker. A current price close to the model’s normal range is more informative than a category average.
- Check two or more legitimate sellers. A single outlier can be a pricing error, a marketplace listing, an open-box item, or a product with unusual fulfillment terms.
- Set a buy threshold. For example, decide in advance that you will buy when the delivered price is within a specified amount of the model’s recent low. The threshold should be based on your budget, not on an assumed future discount.
How to interpret value charts
PassMark’s CPU Value Chart combines thousands of PerformanceTest results with retailer pricing and reviews both daily. It divides performance by price using the lowest currently available price from its affiliates. That makes it useful for screening candidates, especially when a cheaper alternative may provide similar throughput. It is not a universal score: the benchmark may not represent your applications, affiliate prices may differ from your region, and the lowest available price can change before checkout.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a value score to generate a shortlist, then verify independent gaming or application tests, platform cost, power requirements, and the actual local price. A processor with a lower score can still be the right choice if it has the features, memory support, efficiency, or upgrade path your system requires.
Why a back-test is not a price forecast
ComponentPrices reports that a rule tested on 1,252 past decisions across 11 factory price indexes called “wait” 48 times; 29 of those calls were followed by a higher index three months later, or 60.4 percent. That result is presented to show why the publisher does not promise a date for CPU price declines. It is a back-test of that publisher’s rule and indexes, not a direct forecast of retail CPU prices and not a probability that your selected processor will rise.
Compare the performance you actually need
Price alone cannot tell you whether to buy. A gaming-focused buyer and a productivity-focused buyer can rationally choose different processors at the same price.

| Decision axis | What to compare | Why it changes the timing decision |
|---|---|---|
| Gaming | Frame-rate results in the games and resolution you use, including 1% lows when available | A chip with a gaming advantage may justify buying now even if a cheaper general-purpose model has a higher broad value score. |
| Productivity | Render, encode, compile, simulation, photo, video, and other application tests that match your software | Small benchmark differences may be irrelevant for light use but valuable when a task runs for hours every day. |
| Mixed use | A weighted view of your most frequent games and applications | A balanced processor can beat a specialist choice once the whole workload is counted. |
| Price | Current delivered price of the chosen model and close alternatives | Rankings can change as soon as one model receives a discount or another goes out of stock. |
| Power and cooling | Sustained power behavior, cooler capacity, noise, and case airflow | A nominally cheap CPU can require a more expensive cooler or power supply for sustained work. |
| Platform and support | Socket, motherboard, firmware, memory type, expansion needs, and upgrade plans | A lower CPU price can be outweighed by a new motherboard and memory purchase. |
Current comparison coverage reports strong gaming performance from AMD’s X3D models, while some Intel refresh parts remain competitive in lower price tiers and productivity. Those are workload-specific observations, not a permanent brand ranking; prices and software results change. Use tests published for the applications and games you actually run.
Calculate the total platform cost
For a new build, the processor is only one line in the budget. Add the motherboard, memory, cooler if one is not included, firmware requirements, and any power or case changes. A CPU that appears cheaper at retail can cost more once its platform is complete.
New-platform example: Intel Core Ultra 200S
Intel Core Ultra 200S processors require an LGA 1851 motherboard and DDR5 memory. If your current system uses another socket or DDR4, the CPU price understates the upgrade. Compare the complete platform total with a processor that can use hardware you already own.
Drop-in upgrade
A drop-in upgrade is not automatically compatible. Check the exact motherboard manufacturer support list for the processor, required BIOS or firmware version, power limits, and memory configuration. If the board needs a firmware update, confirm that you can update it with your existing CPU or that the board has a supported recovery method. Include the cost and risk of a failed update in your decision.
Total-cost worksheet
| Item | Record |
|---|---|
| CPU | Exact SKU, delivered price, seller, warranty, and date checked |
| Motherboard | Socket, chipset, current price, firmware support, and required features |
| Memory | Type, capacity, speed, number of modules, and current price |
| Cooling | Included cooler or the cost of a compatible cooler rated for the workload |
| Power and case | Any required power-supply, airflow, or mounting changes |
| Existing parts | What can be reused without sacrificing compatibility or reliability |
| Taxes and delivery | Location-specific charges that do not appear in some headline indexes |
Compare totals, not just CPU prices. For an existing compatible platform, the CPU-only route may be the best value. For a new build, a slightly more expensive processor can be cheaper overall if it avoids a motherboard or memory change.

What 2026 market evidence does—and does not—say
Shipment declines are not retail price declines
Tom’s Hardware reported Mercury Research’s finding of a 20 percent year-on-year decline in desktop CPU shipments in the second quarter of 2026. Shipments measure units moving through the market; they do not establish what consumers paid at retail. Lower volume can coexist with stable, rising, or falling prices depending on inventory, product mix, supply, and demand.
Selected price updates can move models in different directions
Intel confirmed selected 2026 price updates and cited market dynamics, supply-chain costs, and strong demand. This does not prove that every processor will become more expensive. It does show why assuming that all CPU prices will drift downward is unsafe: exact models can move differently.
The “PC waterfall” is no guarantee
Dean McCarron, principal at Mercury Research, told PCWorld: “My main takeaway is that people have become very accustomed to the PC waterfall: getting more performance every year at the same price. That’s not going to happen this year. If you want performance, you’re going to have to pay for it. And if you’re trying to stay at the same price, you’re not going to get the same kind of performance boost.” His comment concerns 2026 performance and pricing expectations; it is commentary, not a promise that any named CPU will rise or fall.
Signals that support buying now
- Your current computer is failing or blocking work, and the replacement meets the required workload benchmarks.
- The selected model is close to its recent low and the listing has reliable stock, seller, warranty, and return terms.
- A close alternative is no cheaper after motherboard, memory, cooler, tax, and delivery costs.
- The processor removes a measurable gaming or application bottleneck that costs you time.
- A known promotion or bundle lowers the complete platform total, not merely the advertised CPU price.
- Your budget is fixed and waiting would force an inferior performance tier if prices move against you.
Signals that support waiting
- The purchase is optional and your current system handles your workload comfortably.
- The exact model is well above its recent range without a performance or feature reason.
- A close, compatible alternative delivers similar workload performance for less today.
- You are about to buy a new platform but have not priced the motherboard, DDR5 memory, cooler, firmware support, and delivery costs.
- The listing is low only because it is open-box, from an uncertain seller, missing a cooler, or subject to unusually high shipping or tax.
- You have a clear threshold and a short monitoring period, such as checking the same SKU weekly until a specified date.
Waiting should have an exit condition. If the target price does not appear by your deadline, reassess the alternatives and buy the best complete system that meets the need. Open-ended waiting turns a measurable purchase decision into a rumor-driven habit.

- Write the requirement. List the games, applications, resolution, concurrency, and acceptable completion time. Mark the purchase as urgent, performance-limited, or optional.
- Choose a performance tier. Use workload-matched independent benchmarks. Separate gaming results from productivity results and note whether tests measure averages, minimums, or long-running throughput.
- Shortlist close alternatives. Include processors in the same practical price band and any model that can reuse your motherboard and memory.
- Check exact-model prices. Use the October 2, 2026 Tom’s Hardware U.S. index as a reference where applicable, then verify current listings from multiple retailers in your region.
- Normalize the price. Add tax, shipping, cooler, warranty differences, and any package or seller distinction.
- Price the platform. Confirm socket, motherboard support, firmware, memory type, cooler capacity, power, and case requirements. For Intel Core Ultra 200S, include an LGA 1851 board and DDR5.
- Set the decision threshold. Decide the maximum delivered total you will pay and the minimum workload performance you will accept.
- Check stock and terms on purchase day. Lowest-price records can change weekly or disappear immediately. Verify seller identity, fulfillment, return policy, warranty, and delivery date.
- Buy or schedule a review. Buy when the complete configuration meets the threshold. If it does not, record the exact next check date and the alternative you would choose if the price moves against you.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using MSRP as the decision price
MSRP does not tell you what you can buy today. Compare delivered street prices and the total platform. A model discounted below MSRP may still be poor value if its board and memory requirements are expensive.

Chasing the lowest single listing
A one-off listing can be out of stock, used, imported, missing a warranty, or sold by an unfamiliar marketplace seller. Treat it as a lead to verify, not as the market price.
Reading a broad index as a forecast
Manufacturing indexes, shipment reports, and category averages describe different parts of the supply chain. None establishes a future price for your SKU. Model-level history and current checkout totals are the relevant evidence.
Ignoring memory and motherboard costs
A CPU swap can become a platform rebuild. Check socket and memory type before comparing prices. Intel Core Ultra 200S, for example, requires LGA 1851 and DDR5.

A high aggregate score may not improve your games or applications. Select tests that resemble your workload, then account for efficiency, cooling, noise, and support.
Waiting for an unconfirmed launch or price cut
Roadmaps and rumors are uncertain. Do not defer an urgent purchase on the assumption that an unconfirmed product will launch on time or force a discount. If the purchase is optional, wait only with a defined price target and deadline.
How to monitor prices without losing the decision
Keep a small record for the exact SKU rather than watching every CPU headline. Once a week, capture the delivered price, stock, seller, and any promotion from the same retailers. Compare the entry with the model’s previous entries and with two or three close alternatives. Recalculate the complete platform total whenever a change affects the motherboard, memory, cooler, or delivery cost.
When the target price appears, verify the listing immediately. A weekly index can identify a trend, but it cannot reserve stock or preserve a promotion. If the price is acceptable and the system meets your workload requirement, buying ends the uncertainty; if not, follow the alternative and deadline you wrote down.

Do not wait for a universal “settled” CPU market. Buy now when the exact processor delivers the performance you need, its current delivered price is defensible against its own recent record, and the complete platform fits your budget. Wait when the upgrade is optional, the model is unusually expensive, a compatible alternative is better value, or your total build is not yet defined. Treat broad indexes, shipment numbers, and market commentary as context—not as a calendar for your purchase.
