Yes—Linux can be an excellent school laptop platform when the student’s required apps, exams, and hardware work with it. The strongest reasons are lower software-licensing costs, a system you can study and modify, greater control over data and settings, and the possibility of keeping an older computer useful. None is automatic: the laptop still costs money, open source is not a blanket privacy guarantee, and some school software only supports another operating system.
Use the checks below before changing a machine that a student depends on for classes. A Linux laptop is a practical choice when the school workflow is browser-based or Linux-compatible and the student has time—or help—for occasional troubleshooting.

Is Linux good for college students and high-school students?
Linux is a good fit for a student who values control, wants to learn how computers work, and can verify compatibility before the first assignment. It is less suitable when a school mandates a particular desktop application, remote-proctoring tool, or managed device that does not support Linux.

Canonical’s 23 May 2023 education article reports that its quality-assurance team performed “over 500 OS compatibility focused hardware tests.” That is a vendor-reported testing figure, not an independent audit and not a count proving that every laptop model works. Confirm the specific computer and school requirements yourself.
1. Spend less on the operating system and everyday software
What can actually be free
Many Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, can be downloaded and used without a required operating-system license payment. Free-software licenses also permit copying and sharing under their terms. The GNU Project and Free Software Foundation argue that this makes it easier for schools and families to provide the same software at school and at home rather than buying separate licenses for every machine.
A typical student can use a distribution, web browser, office suite, media tools, programming environments, and thousands of other packages without paying a per-device license fee. The saving is most visible when a family is refurbishing several computers or when a class needs a common development tool that would otherwise require paid licenses.
Why “free” does not mean zero cost
No quantified student or family savings estimate has been established for this decision. The computer, charger, internet connection, accessories, repairs, backups, and optional technical support still cost money. Some commercial applications, fonts, plug-ins, cloud storage, or specialist services may also charge regardless of the operating system.
| Cost area | What Linux may change | What it does not remove |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system license | Many distributions, including Ubuntu, are available without a required license payment. | Any purchase price of the laptop and any optional paid support. |
| General software | Free and open-source alternatives can cover web, documents, coding, graphics, and media. | Paid applications or services required by a course. |
| Hardware and connectivity | No direct reduction. | Computer, charger, Wi-Fi or mobile data, printer, storage, and repairs. |
| Setup and support | Community documentation can reduce some costs. | Your time, training, troubleshooting, or a technician’s fee. |
Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU Project, wrote that “Educational activities, including schools of all levels from kindergarten to university, have a moral duty to teach only free software.” That is an advocacy position, not a neutral consensus or a promise of savings. Families should calculate the complete cost of the student’s setup, including the cost of keeping another device for unsupported coursework.

When this reason is strongest
- The school permits students to choose their operating system.
- Required work is delivered through web applications or Linux-compatible programs.
- The family already owns a compatible computer and wants to avoid a new operating-system license.
- Several students need the same legal, shareable tools at home.
2. Learn by exploring how software works
Linux makes the computer an object of study
Free-software licenses make source code available for study in the projects that publish it, and they allow copying or modification under the relevant license. A curious student can inspect configuration files, read documentation, automate repetitive tasks, write a small program, or build a package rather than treating the computer as a sealed appliance.
That hands-on environment connects ordinary schoolwork with practical skills: navigating a filesystem, using a terminal, understanding permissions, managing processes, reading logs, and controlling network services. A student can start with a graphical desktop and gradually investigate what sits underneath it. The same habit of experimentation can support programming, science projects, digital art, and robotics.

Canonical presents Ubuntu as a platform for learning development skills that can carry into professional work. The GNU education materials emphasize sharing and understanding software. Both are reasons to create opportunities for learning, not guarantees of a job, a qualification, or a particular academic result. Outcomes depend on the student’s projects, instruction, persistence, and the course itself.
A safe learning progression
- Start with a supported installation. Use a current release and keep a separate backup of school files.
- Learn the desktop first. Practice updates, user accounts, file management, and recovery before changing system-wide settings.
- Add a small project. Write a script, host a local web page, or automate a file task so each change has a visible purpose.
- Use documentation before commands. Read what a command changes, check its options, and avoid copying instructions that delete or overwrite data.
- Keep a rollback plan. Maintain installation media and another device or service for assignments that require unsupported software.
The learning benefit is strongest when a student wants to understand the system. A student who does not enjoy troubleshooting may reasonably choose a platform that minimizes maintenance.
3. Gain more control over settings, software, and data
Control through inspectable and customizable software
Canonical describes Ubuntu as open source, allowing users to scrutinize and customize the operating system. In practice, that can mean choosing a desktop environment, removing unwanted packages, changing update behavior within the supported options, and selecting which services run. Configuration is visible rather than hidden behind a single vendor interface.

Transparency is a means of investigation, not proof that every component is safe. A student still has to install trusted software, apply security updates, use strong account credentials, and review permissions. Closed-source applications, browser extensions, websites, firmware, and cloud accounts can collect data even when the underlying operating system is open source.
Ubuntu’s specific privacy statement
Canonical says Ubuntu does not collect usage data unless the user permits it. Treat that as a statement about Ubuntu and its documented settings, not a guarantee for every Linux distribution, application, website, or hardware configuration. Read the installer and privacy panels, review enabled services after installation, and check the privacy policies of any software added later.
What control looks like for a student
- Choose which applications are installed instead of accepting a fixed bundle.
- Inspect network and background services and disable those that are unnecessary and supported for disabling.
- Keep school documents in local folders or a storage service selected by the family and school.
- Use separate user accounts so a guest or younger sibling cannot alter the student’s settings.
- Decide when to install updates while still meeting the distribution’s security guidance.
More control also creates more responsibility. A student who removes a service, delays updates, or grants a program broad permissions can create problems. Control is valuable when paired with disciplined maintenance.
4. Keep some older computers useful for longer
Why Linux can help
Canonical describes Ubuntu as a lightweight option for older machines and gives the example of Compudopt refurbishing laptops with Ubuntu for young people and communities. A less demanding desktop and a current software stack may make an aging computer suitable for writing, browsing, coding, and other moderate tasks.
This is a vendor-published example, not independent comparative testing and not a promise that installing Linux will speed up every computer. Results depend on the processor, memory, storage health, graphics, battery, cooling, and the distribution and applications selected. A failing hard drive, swollen battery, or damaged hinge will not be repaired by changing software.

Check the machine before installing
- Record the processor model, memory amount, storage type and free space, graphics hardware, and wireless adapter.
- Test the battery, charger, keyboard, trackpad, display, USB ports, webcam, microphone, speakers, and headphone jack.
- Back up school files and create recovery media for the current operating system.
- Confirm that the chosen distribution supports the processor architecture and the laptop’s graphics and wireless hardware.
- Decide whether a solid-state drive or additional memory would provide a better upgrade than an operating-system change.
Ubuntu runs across a range of PC hardware, but support for a particular model must be checked. A refurbished laptop can be a sensible category to consider, provided the exact model’s compatibility, condition, warranty, and return policy are verified.
Compatibility is the decision point most students miss
Canonical notes that students can reach Google or Microsoft 365 ecosystems in a browser and points to LibreOffice as an open-source alternative. Browser access is useful, but it does not prove that every school app or feature works. Before switching, obtain the school’s current requirements in writing.
Use this pre-switch checklist
- List required software. Ask each teacher or the school’s IT office about desktop applications, plug-ins, virtual laboratories, programming tools, accessibility utilities, and file formats.
- Check exams and proctoring. Confirm the operating systems supported by remote-proctoring, secure-browser, lockdown, or identity-verification tools. Test them before a graded assessment.
- Check account and classroom services. Sign in to the learning-management system, video-conference service, cloud drive, email, and assignment portals using the exact browser the student will use.
- Test the exact laptop. Boot a live USB or install on a spare drive and verify Wi-Fi, webcam, microphone, speakers, Bluetooth, sleep and wake, brightness controls, graphics acceleration, external displays, printers, and any specialized peripheral.
- Confirm file exchange. Open and save the formats teachers require. LibreOffice may handle many common documents, but layout, macros, fonts, and advanced spreadsheet features can differ from another office suite.
- Arrange an exception device. If even one required course is unsupported, ensure the student can use a school computer, family computer, or other approved device when needed.
Canonical’s hardware certification and testing applies to supported hardware, not every model sold. A live test is more informative than assuming that a similar-looking laptop will behave the same way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security updates and release support
Do not choose a distribution solely because an article calls its support “long term.” Current Ubuntu documentation says LTS Main and Restricted packages receive five years of standard security maintenance. Longer coverage is available through Ubuntu Pro, while Universe and Multiverse packages have different support periods unless extended coverage applies.
Check the exact Ubuntu release, repository, and package before relying on a support date. Keep automatic security updates enabled where appropriate, install updates before important school work, and maintain backups. A supported release does not protect against phishing, weak passwords, malicious browser extensions, or unsafe downloads.

Linux versus the student’s current operating system
There is no source-backed universal winner. Use the following comparison, based on the student’s actual workflow rather than general reputation.
| Question | Linux may be the better fit when… | Stay with the current system or use a second device when… |
|---|---|---|
| School software | Required tools run in a browser or have a supported Linux version. | A required desktop, exam, or accessibility tool excludes Linux. |
| Hardware | The exact laptop passes live tests for wireless, camera, audio, sleep, graphics, and peripherals. | A critical component is unreliable or unsupported. |
| Cost | A family can reuse hardware and free software meets the coursework. | Support, replacement hardware, or paid specialist applications erase the expected saving. |
| Privacy and control | The student wants to select software and learn how services operate. | The student cannot commit to updates, permissions, and account security. |
| Time and comfort | The student enjoys learning and has a backup plan for troubleshooting. | Deadlines leave no time for diagnosing an unfamiliar system. |
A low-risk way to try Linux
- Start with a noncritical computer. Do not experiment first on the only machine needed for exams or paid work.
- Back up twice. Keep one copy disconnected or otherwise protected from accidental deletion.
- Test without installing. Boot the distribution’s live environment and run the compatibility checklist.
- Try a dual-boot or separate drive only if you understand recovery. Disk partitioning can erase data; follow the distribution’s current documentation and preserve recovery media.
- Install required applications before term starts. Test file sharing, printing, video calls, and any course-specific workflow with sample documents.
- Document the setup. Save Wi-Fi details, recovery steps, backup locations, and the school IT contact in a place accessible when the laptop is offline.
- Keep the fallback available. Do not remove the alternative device until the student has completed a real assignment successfully.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The installer works, but Wi-Fi does not.”
Use a wired connection or another computer to obtain the distribution’s documented driver or firmware package, then retest. If the adapter remains unsupported, a compatible USB adapter may be simpler than relying on an unreliable connection.
“The webcam works in one app but not another.”
Check browser permissions, application input selection, mute switches, and whether another program is holding the camera. Test the exact conferencing or exam application, not just a camera preview.

“An update breaks a deadline workflow.”
Keep backups, install updates before—not during—critical work, and maintain the fallback device. Report reproducible problems to the distribution or school IT team with the release and hardware details.
Bottom line
Bring Linux to school when its four benefits match the student’s priorities and the compatibility checks pass: no required operating-system license for many distributions, a rich environment for learning, more direct control over software and data, and a chance to extend the useful life of suitable older hardware. Treat those benefits as opportunities with conditions, not guarantees. Confirm every required application and peripheral, understand the release’s support coverage, keep backups, and preserve access to another supported device for exceptions.
