Should You Accept Guest Posts on Your WordPress Blog?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accept guest posts only when they offer your readers clear value and you can review, edit, and maintain them. A guest post is not automatically bad for SEO; the purpose of the content and its links matters. Invite or consider submissions selectively, keep editorial control, and reject articles whose main purpose is to place promotional links.

When a guest post is worth accepting

Judge the draft as a piece of service to your audience, not as a way to collect backlinks or fill a publishing calendar. A useful contribution might bring credible expertise, a distinctive practitioner perspective, or a well-supported answer to a question your regular coverage has not addressed.

Before accepting, check the value against the work and risks involved:

  • Reader benefit: Does the article answer a real question for the people who visit your blog?
  • Fit and originality: Is it on-topic, original, and consistent with your standards?
  • Evidence: Are factual claims supportable, and can you check them?
  • Links: Are outbound links relevant to the article, or does the draft appear designed to promote a site or manipulate rankings?
  • Capacity: Can you edit the draft, verify the author and any image permissions, handle disclosures if needed, and maintain the page afterward?

Accept when the reader benefit is meaningful and you can responsibly oversee the content. Ask for revisions when shortcomings are fixable. Decline copied or unsupported material, irrelevant promotional links, or a draft whose real purpose is to secure a backlink.

Are guest posts bad for SEO?

No—not simply because an outside author wrote them. Google distinguishes third-party editorial content intended to reach readers from content hosted to manipulate rankings. Its spam policies identify buying or selling links for ranking purposes, paid guest articles with links that pass ranking credit, and optimized anchor text in guest posts as examples of link spam.

That makes the arrangement and link treatment important. Do not promise publication in exchange for a link or sell ranking credit. If a contribution is sponsored, label it clearly and handle its links in line with current search guidance. For links in untrusted user-submitted content, Google suggests using rel="ugc" or rel="nofollow" to signal the link’s nature and ask Google not to follow it.

Google does not provide a basis here for predicting a specific traffic or ranking gain from accepting guest posts. The practical standard is editorial: publish for readers, maintain control over links, and do not host spam for its ranking value.

How to accept submissions without giving away publishing control

Use a draft-first process

Publish submission standards and ask for a pitch or draft. Review topic fit, originality, factual claims, author identity, image permissions, and outbound links before approving anything. Edit the piece, resolve any disclosure needs, publish with an accurate byline, and retain the ability to correct or remove it later.

Give outside writers the least access they need

For a guest author who needs to submit drafts but should not publish, use WordPress’s Contributor role. WordPress documents that Contributors can write and manage their own posts but cannot publish. By contrast, Authors can publish their own posts, while Editors can publish and manage other users’ posts. Reserve Editor or Administrator access for trusted staff, and grant only the capabilities needed for the work. See WordPress Roles and Capabilities.

Spell out contributor permissions and image-rights expectations in your submission agreement. The applicable copyright terms depend on jurisdiction and are not established by the cited platform guidance.

How to reduce spam and manage links

A submission form or other public user-content channel can attract spam. Set clear rules, hold suspicious material for manual approval, and monitor published user content for off-topic links, commercial usernames, automated or gibberish posts, and unexpected spam pages. Google’s guidance on preventing user-generated spam notes that tools such as Akismet can help WordPress sites address spam, but a plugin does not replace editorial review. Google also outlines ways to prevent portions of a site from being abused by spam.

Google defines user-generated spam as spammy content added by users through a channel intended for user content. Its Manual actions report guidance says manual actions can affect pages that contain spam; excessive user-generated spam can also harm the user experience and the site’s reputation and ranking assessment. This supports having a review and removal process; it does not mean every guest article is prohibited.

WordPress’s built-in comment moderation is designed to help address comment spam and other moderation needs. Comments are not the same as guest articles, but holding user content for review is a useful moderation principle.

When a guest post needs a sponsorship disclosure

Treat an editorial contribution separately from an advertisement or endorsement. In the United States, FTC endorsement guidance is relevant when a post endorses a product or service and the author has a material connection readers would not reasonably expect—for example, payment or a free product. The FTC’s endorsement guidance reflects its 2023 revision, and its disclosure guidance says disclosures should be clear and easy to notice. A guest byline alone does not disclose sponsorship. Check the rules that apply to contributors and readers in other jurisdictions.

A quick decision path

  1. Accept if the draft is original, useful to your audience, supportable, and within your capacity to review and maintain.
  2. Request changes if its value is sound but factual, editorial, disclosure, or link issues can be corrected.
  3. Decline if it is mainly promotional, relies on copied or unsupported material, or you cannot responsibly oversee it.
