Should Instructors Allow, Restrict, or Prohibit AI Use in a Course?

There is no universally correct AI rule. Instructors should choose the policy that best serves the knowledge or skill an assignment is meant to develop, fits the assessment, follows institutional requirements, and gives students operational instructions. That may mean broad permission, permission for named tasks, or prohibition for work in which AI would replace the learning process being assessed.

A usable policy says exactly what students may do, what they may not do, which tools are covered, how use must be disclosed, what students must verify, and where they can ask about an ambiguous case. Course-wide language should be repeated in assignment instructions whenever a particular task has a different rule.

Start with the learning goal, not the tool

Define what students must learn or demonstrate

Write the intended outcome in concrete terms before choosing an AI rule. Is the student being assessed on unaided calculation, close reading, original argument, debugging skill, communication, research judgment, or the ability to use an AI system responsibly? The answer determines whether AI supports the activity or substitutes for it.

University of Washington Teaching@UW and George Washington University guidance both tie the decision to learning outcomes. If generating a first draft would bypass the writing practice being assessed, restricting generation for that assignment is coherent. If evaluating, correcting, or documenting AI output is itself an outcome, a bounded use can be part of the exercise.

Check whether the assessment remains valid

Ask what evidence the assignment is supposed to produce. A take-home essay that is meant to show a student’s ability to formulate and support an argument is not measuring that ability if an AI system supplies the argument and prose. A programming assignment may permit an assistant for explaining an error while still requiring the student to write, test, and explain the final code. An oral examination, in-class writing, laboratory demonstration, draft history, or annotated solution can provide evidence of the process when unaided performance matters.

Separate course rules from assignment rules

A single course can contain different legitimate policies. Broad permission may fit a project on AI evaluation; prohibition may fit a language-practice quiz; conditional permission may fit a paper in which brainstorming is allowed but generated paragraphs are not. State the difference where students will see it, rather than expecting them to infer an exception from a general syllabus paragraph.

Three workable policy models

Approach When it may fit Minimum details to publish
Broad permission AI use is compatible with the outcomes, or AI literacy is an explicit outcome. Permitted tools or categories; disclosure or citation format; verification duties; privacy limits; and forms of outsourcing that remain prohibited.
Conditional or assignment-specific permission Some activities benefit from AI while others assess unaided capability. Named assignments and tasks; allowed and forbidden actions; required records or disclosure; and a route for resolving uncertainty.
Prohibition AI use would defeat the intended learning activity, assessment, or an explained course constraint. The scope of the ban; examples of covered tools and tasks; the learning-based rationale; consequences under applicable policy; and a process for questions or accommodations.

Broad permission with boundaries

Permission is not a waiver of responsibility. Students can be required to check every factual claim, citation, calculation, quotation, translation, and code suggestion before submission. Require a short disclosure identifying the tool, date, purpose, and material contribution, and retain prompts or output when that record is relevant to the learning goal. Prohibit submitting unreviewed output, fabricated sources, or text the student cannot explain.

Conditional permission

This is often the clearest choice for mixed courses. For example, allow an AI system to generate practice questions and suggest alternative outlines, permit grammar feedback on a student-written draft, but prohibit generated analysis or final prose in the assessed submission. In a coding course, permit explanations of compiler messages but prohibit copying a complete solution. Each assignment should list its own allowed and disallowed actions in plain language.

Prohibition for a defined activity

A prohibition should identify the activity rather than rely on a slogan such as ‘no AI.’ State whether the rule covers text generators, code assistants, image and audio generators, translation systems, paraphrasers, automated solvers, and built-in features in other software. Explain that the restriction protects a specified learning objective; do not present it as a claim that all AI use is inherently harmful. Offer a way to ask about accessibility, language, or other circumstances without forcing students to guess whether an exception exists.

Compare policies on the dimensions that affect students

Decision dimension Questions for the instructor
Learning goal Would AI practice the target skill, support it, or replace it?
Assessment validity Will submitted work still provide credible evidence of the intended capability?
Academic integrity Can students tell the difference between permitted assistance and misrepresentation, and does the rule align with the institution’s integrity process?
Privacy and data handling Could use expose personal information, confidential material, original student work, or copyrighted content to a third party?
Accuracy and bias What must students check, and could erroneous or biased output distort the subject matter?
Access and inclusion Do students have comparable access to the required tool, and are accessibility or language needs addressed?
Institutional fit Does campus policy require an approved service, impose data restrictions, or set a default that affects this course?

Authority and defaults differ by institution and jurisdiction. A policy that is permitted at one university is not automatically available at another, and course guidance does not settle every question about copyright, accessibility law, or student-data protection.

What major guidance documents recommend

  • UNESCO’s Guidance for generative AI in education and research, published 7 September 2023 and updated 16 January 2026, takes a human-centered approach. It emphasizes privacy protection, ethical validation, pedagogical design, coherent policy frameworks, and constructive educational uses. It is international guidance, not a course-specific mandate.
  • The University of Minnesota Provost’s Office says instructors may allow or prohibit generative AI and strongly encourages clear syllabus statements connected to academic policies. Minnesota says it does not license generative-AI detectors, notes that detector reliability varies, and does not recommend a detector as the sole verification method.
  • University of Washington Teaching@UW describes conditional use and prohibition as basic policy types, recommends discussing expectations in the syllabus and first class, and suggests assignment-level descriptions and disclosure. Its guidance flags accuracy, bias, privacy, copyrighted material, original work, and personal information.
  • The University of Virginia Teaching Hub, updated May 2026, gives examples ranging from prohibition in a writing course to bounded forms of permission and says instructors are allowed and encouraged to set course-level policies in UVA’s context.
  • George Washington University’s Provost guidance, reported as published in August 2026 in search metadata, distinguishes general, selective, and prohibited use and places responsibility for submitted content on students. Those are GWU rules and should not be generalized to every institution.

How to write an operational syllabus policy

Use the following sequence to turn a choice into instructions students can follow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Name the default. Begin with one sentence: AI is broadly allowed, allowed only for specified tasks, or prohibited for this course or assignment.
  2. Define the scope. Say whether the rule covers text, image, audio, video, translation, paraphrasing, coding, equation-solving, grammar, search, and built-in AI features. Name an institution-approved service if tool choice matters.
  3. Give concrete examples. Address brainstorming, outlining, translation, editing, code explanation, code generation, image creation, summarization, and citation generation whenever they are relevant. Distinguish an allowed action from a nearby forbidden one.
  4. Set disclosure requirements. Explain whether students must cite AI, add a process note, attach prompts and outputs, identify the tool and version, or simply declare that no AI was used. Tell them when and where the statement belongs.
  5. Assign verification duties. State that students remain responsible for the accuracy, citations, quotations, calculations, originality, and explainability of submitted work. A tool’s confident answer is not evidence that it is correct.
  6. Protect sensitive material. Instruct students not to enter personal, confidential, unpublished, original, or copyrighted material into a third-party system unless the relevant institutional and vendor terms permit it. Explain what approved alternative to use when one exists.
  7. Connect the rule to existing policy. Identify the applicable academic-integrity standard, copyright expectations, and consequences for misrepresentation. Do not promise that a detector will prove a violation.
  8. Repeat exceptions in assignments. Put the specific permission or ban in the assignment sheet, rubric, lab handout, or quiz instructions. Include the same disclosure format there.
  9. Provide a question route and review date. Tell students whom to contact before submitting uncertain work. Recheck the language when institutional rules, approved tools, or material capabilities change.

Copy-ready model language

“For this course, AI use is permitted only for the activities identified in each assignment. On the project brief, you may use an AI system to brainstorm questions and receive feedback on a draft you wrote; you may not submit generated analysis, citations, code, images, or prose as your own unless the brief expressly permits that use. For every permitted use, include the tool name, date, purpose, and a short description of what you kept or changed. You remain responsible for checking every claim, citation, quotation, calculation, and line of submitted code. Do not enter personal, confidential, unpublished, original, or copyrighted material into a third-party tool without confirming that the tool and institutional rules allow it. Ask the instructor before submitting if a use is not clearly covered. This rule supports the learning outcome stated on each assignment and operates alongside the institution’s academic-integrity and copyright policies.”

Manage accuracy, privacy, bias, and student access

Require human verification

Generative systems can produce plausible but false claims, invented references, faulty calculations, insecure code, or biased descriptions. Require students to open and check cited sources, rerun calculations, test code, compare translations with the original, and explain substantive edits. For a course that studies AI, make the verification record part of the assessed work.

Limit data exposure

Students may not know how a service stores prompts, uses uploaded material, or transfers data across borders. A policy should steer them away from personal information, confidential case details, unpublished research, identifiable peer work, and copyrighted readings unless institutional guidance expressly permits the upload. Check whether the institution provides an approved environment before requiring a particular tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for unequal access

If an assignment requires a paid or account-gated service, provide an equivalent route for students who cannot use it and account for accessibility needs. Conversely, a prohibition should not remove a legitimate accommodation without a process for arranging one. Record the actual learning outcome so an alternative method can demonstrate the same capability.

Do not make detectors the policy

Detection scores are not a substitute for a clear rule or evidence about how work was produced. University of Washington Teaching@UW states: “While instructors have the right to prohibit the use of AI tools, no technology can reliably identify unauthorized student use of AI.” That sentence is UW teaching guidance, not a universal legal conclusion. Follow the institution’s academic-integrity procedure, consider drafts, notes, version history, oral explanation, and other appropriate evidence, and give the student a chance to respond.

Can instructors ban AI in a course?

In many institutions an instructor can prohibit or restrict AI, but the authority, default policy, accessibility process, and required wording vary. Minnesota, Washington, Virginia, and George Washington all publish examples in which instructors set boundaries, yet those examples govern their own contexts. Check the current faculty handbook, academic-integrity policy, privacy guidance, and disability or accessibility process before announcing a ban.

A defensible prohibition is narrow enough to understand, tied to a stated learning objective, and accompanied by examples and a question route. “No AI” without defining covered tools or explaining the assessed skill invites inconsistent enforcement. A ban also should not be enforced through an unsupported promise that software can identify every unauthorized use.

What current syllabus practice shows—and what it does not

A 2024 study, Analysis of Generative AI Policies in Computing Course Syllabi, examined 98 computing-course syllabi from 54 U.S. R1 institutions. Most syllabi in that sample prohibited or restricted generative AI, commonly citing veracity, privacy, or learning concerns. The sample describes computing syllabi at those institutions; it is not a census or a representative estimate of policy across all courses, disciplines, or countries.

Apply the rule consistently during the term

Teach the policy before grading it

Discuss the rule in the first class, show one permitted and one prohibited example, and let students practice a disclosure statement on a low-stakes task. Put the assignment-specific rule next to the submission instructions and rubric, not only in a long syllabus.

Handle ambiguous cases predictably

When a student asks whether a use is allowed, classify the action by its effect on the learning goal, not by the marketing label of the tool. Clarify the answer in writing and update the assignment FAQ or handout so the entire class receives the same information.

Review after meaningful changes

Revisit the policy when a tool adds a materially different capability, the institution changes its approved-services list, or an assignment changes its learning outcome. Keep the rationale and examples aligned with the version students are actually using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for instructors

Choose the least restrictive rule that still protects the learning objective and valid evidence of achievement. Permit AI when its use is part of the learning, restrict it to named tasks when outcomes differ, and prohibit it where generation would replace the capability being assessed. In every case, publish concrete boundaries, disclosure and verification requirements, privacy limits, institutional context, and a way to ask before submitting.
