Short answer: probably not, unless you will use the Insta360 X6’s newer capture modes or regularly need its higher-resolution 360 stills. The X6 Standard Bundle launched at US$699.99, with availability from August 12, 2026, while the X4 already records 8K 360 video and 5.7K at 60 frames per second. For a casual X4 owner who is happy with existing footage, the published specifications alone do not establish a need to spend another $700.
The upgrade becomes easier to justify for creators who want 8K at 50fps, 120MP 360 photos, flat 4K subject tracking, or single-lens recording up to 5K60. Those are concrete capability changes, but they matter only when they match how you shoot. The price is the manufacturer’s announced starting price, not a verified current street price; check the official launch announcement and current retailer listings before buying.

The practical verdict for casual X4 users
Keeping an X4 is the financially sensible choice when you mainly record occasional trips, family events, walking tours, or social clips and already like the results. The X4 covers the core 360 use case with 8K capture and a 5.7K60 mode. Buying the X6 gives you newer options, not a completely different category of camera.
At $699.99, the X6 is a costly upgrade if your present camera rarely limits a shot. A new camera can be worthwhile when a specific limitation repeatedly affects your work: motion that benefits from a higher frame rate, still images that need more reframing latitude, or projects that require a conventional forward-facing view from the same device. Without one of those needs, the money may buy capability that remains unused.

What the $699.99 launch price means
Insta360 announced a US$699.99 starting price for the X6 Standard Bundle and said availability would begin August 12, 2026, through its official store, Amazon and selected retailers. This is an announced launch price, not confirmation of what every seller charges today, nor a promise that a particular bundle or promotion remains available.
The manufacturer’s launch announcement also mentions accessories, trade-in options and optional FlexiCare coverage. Terms, eligibility and current pricing for those extras are not established here, so treat them as items to verify at checkout rather than as part of the $699.99 comparison.
What an X4 owner already has
The X4 is not an entry-level camera that the X6 makes obsolete. Insta360’s X4 product page lists 8K 360 capture and 5.7K60fps 360 video. That means an existing owner already has high-resolution footage for reframing and a high-frame-rate setting for smoother action.

If your X4 files already provide enough detail after reframing, a newer model will not automatically make edits more compelling. Lighting, camera placement, movement and the quality of your final export can remain more important than the model number.

X6 versus X4: the published differences
The table below uses Insta360’s published specifications and keeps the recording conditions attached to each number. It is not a controlled laboratory comparison between the two cameras.
| Comparison point | Insta360 X6 | Insta360 X4 | What it means for an owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Announced starting price | US$699.99 for the Standard Bundle, announced August 12, 2026 | Current price not stated in the supplied product information | There is no verified same-day street-price comparison. |
| 360 video | Up to 8K at 50fps, according to the 2026 launch announcement | 8K 360 capture and 5.7K at 60fps, according to the X4 product page | X6 combines the highest listed resolution with a 50fps 8K option; X4 already offers 8K and a 60fps mode at 5.7K. |
| 360-mode still photos | 120MP options listed in Insta360’s shooting specifications | 72MP options listed in the same X-series specifications | X6 offers more pixel data for cropping and reframing stills, but resolution alone does not guarantee a visible improvement in every image. |
| Flat, non-360 capture | 4K subject tracking listed by the manufacturer | Comparable X4 capability not established in the cited product information | Useful if you want a tracked conventional shot without reframing a 360 file. |
| Single-lens recording | Up to 5K60fps, according to the launch announcement | Comparable X4 specification not established in the cited information | Potentially valuable when you know the direction of the shot and want a conventional camera workflow. |
| Published battery claim | 140 minutes at 8K30fps | 135 minutes in laboratory conditions at 5.7K30fps; 75 minutes at 8K30fps | The figures use different modes and conditions, so they are not a fair like-for-like endurance test. |
For the underlying figures, see Insta360’s X-series photo and video specifications and the official X4 product page. Hardware details are listed in the company’s X6 hardware specifications.
Where the X6 can make a real difference
8K at 50fps for high-resolution motion
The X6’s listed 8K50fps 360 mode is its clearest video-specification step over the X4. Recording more frames at the highest listed resolution can help when you want smoother motion while retaining room to reframe. It is most relevant to action, moving subjects and edits that slow footage modestly.

Do not interpret 8K50 as a guarantee of sharper or cleaner footage in every situation. The manufacturer publishes the mode, but the supplied information contains no independent image-quality test, crop comparison or low-light measurement. Storage requirements, processing time and export settings also affect whether you notice the difference.

120MP 360 stills
The shooting-specification page lists 120MP 360-photo options for the X6 and 72MP options for the X4. More pixels can provide additional flexibility when you crop a still, straighten a horizon or select a narrow viewpoint from a spherical image.
That advantage matters most to photographers who print, crop aggressively or deliver high-resolution stills. For a small phone post, a web gallery or an image viewed at ordinary screen size, the difference may be difficult to see. Pixel count does not by itself establish better dynamic range, color, stitching or low-light performance.
Flat 4K subject tracking
Insta360 lists flat 4K subject tracking for the X6. This is a conventional, forward-facing output rather than a 360 file that you reframe later. It can simplify a presentation, tutorial or follow shot when you want the camera to keep a selected subject in view.

The benefit is workflow-specific. If you enjoy choosing the viewpoint during editing, 360 capture remains useful. If you often need a ready-to-share flat clip, tracking can reduce editing steps. The supplied specifications do not establish tracking accuracy in crowded scenes, fast movement or poor light.

Single-lens recording up to 5K60
The X6’s single-lens mode reaches 5K60fps according to the launch announcement. This gives you a conventional-camera option when the direction of the shot is known in advance. It may reduce the storage and editing overhead of recording a full sphere, while retaining a high frame rate.
Choose this mode only when you are confident about framing. A 360 recording preserves the ability to look around later; a single-lens clip does not. The choice is therefore flexibility versus a more direct, traditional workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery claims need careful reading
Battery figures are easy to misread as a generational improvement. Insta360 says the X6 records for 140 minutes at 8K30fps. The X4 page lists 135 minutes in a laboratory environment at 5.7K30fps and 75 minutes at 8K30fps.
Because the X4’s 135-minute figure uses 5.7K30 and its 75-minute figure uses 8K30, neither is a same-condition match for the X6’s 8K30 claim. Temperature, stabilization, screen use, wireless connections, storage media and firmware can all affect real runtime. The published numbers are useful planning references, not proof that an X6 will last a fixed amount of time in your outing.

Who should consider buying the X6
- High-resolution 360 photographers: You frequently crop or reframe stills and can use the listed 120MP mode.
- Action and motion shooters: You need 8K capture at 50fps rather than choosing between 8K resolution and the X4’s 5.7K60 setting.
- Creators who alternate workflows: You want both reframable 360 footage and a flat 4K tracked shot or 5K60 single-lens clip from one camera.
- Owners replacing a camera for a specific limitation: Your X4 repeatedly fails to provide a mode required by a current project, and that mode is listed for the X6.
Who should keep the X4
- Occasional users: You record infrequently and your existing 8K 360 files already meet your delivery needs.
- Reframing-focused editors: You do not need flat tracking or single-lens capture and are satisfied choosing viewpoints in post.
- Budget-conscious owners: A $699.99 purchase would consume money needed for travel, storage, editing hardware or other production essentials.
- Buyers expecting a guaranteed visual revolution: The published specifications do not include independent tests proving better image quality in every scene.
A decision process before spending $700
- Write down the problem. Identify a shot you cannot make with the X4, not a specification you simply find interesting.
- Match it to an X6 mode. Confirm that 8K50, 120MP stills, flat 4K tracking or 5K60 single-lens recording directly solves that problem.
- Check how often it occurs. A mode used once a year is harder to justify than one required on every assignment.
- Account for the complete purchase. Verify the current bundle, storage, accessories, taxes, shipping and any protection plan. The announced $699.99 is a starting price.
- Keep the X4 if the answer is “better in theory.” If you cannot name a recurring limitation, continue using the camera you own and reassess when a real project demands more.
What is not established by the published information
No independent review measurements or controlled comparative tests were identified for this model-specific decision. There is therefore no substantiated claim here about superior sharpness, dynamic range, stitching, stabilization, audio, heat management, transfer speed or editing performance.
Insta360 CEO and co-founder JK Liu described the X6 as “the camera we always wanted to build” and said it can capture everything “in any light” while handing users a finished edit before they reach for a phone. That is promotional language from the August 12, 2026 announcement, not independent evidence of image quality or automated-editing results.
The safest conclusion is narrower: X6 has a stronger published feature set in several areas, while X4 remains capable for core 360 recording. Whether that difference is worth $699.99 depends on the modes you will actually use.
