There is no single cheapest way for every Canadian to convert CAD to USD. For everyday purchases, a credit card can be convenient, but check its exchange-rate method and foreign-currency fee. For cash, transfers, or a USD balance, compare the bank and currency-service quotes for the same transaction. Judge the options by the final CAD charged or USD received after all fees—not by the advertised rate alone.
Choose by what you need the USD for
| Transaction | Options to compare | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Paying for a purchase in USD | Canadian credit card; U.S.-dollar credit card if you often make USD purchases | Issuer exchange-rate method, foreign-currency charge, card or account fees, and how you will pay the bill |
| Getting physical cash | Bank, currency exchange service, or card withdrawal | Quoted exchange rate, service charges, ATM fees, and—in the case of a credit-card cash advance—cash-advance fees and interest |
| Sending money or holding a USD balance | Bank and transfer or multi-currency service | USD delivered after all transfer, funding, wire, and recipient-bank costs; timing and account terms |
Using a credit card for USD purchases
A credit card lets you pay without arranging USD in advance, but the transaction can include both an exchange rate and a foreign-currency conversion charge. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) says the issuer applies an exchange rate and may add a conversion charge; its example shows a 2.5% charge, but that example is not a statement that every card charges 2.5%. Check your own card agreement for the rate method and fee. FCAC: How credit cards work

If you often buy goods or services priced in USD, a U.S.-dollar credit card may help you avoid foreign-currency conversion rates on those purchases, according to the FCAC. Compare its annual fee and other account costs, and make sure you understand how you will pay the USD balance. FCAC: Choosing a credit card

Withdrawing cash using a credit card is a separate transaction. The FCAC says cash-advance fees are typically higher, and interest runs from the date of the advance until it is repaid. Include both costs when comparing a cash withdrawal with exchanging cash through a bank or currency service. FCAC: How credit cards work

Comparing a bank with a currency exchange or transfer service
A bank can be convenient if you already have an account there or need USD linked to a bank account or payment. A currency service may suit a transfer, a stored USD balance, or spending through a multi-currency card. Neither category is automatically cheaper: ask for a quote for your exact amount, funding method, route, and date, and include any service, transfer, wire, funding, and recipient-bank charges.
For example, Wise publishes Canadian pricing for its card and multi-currency account, including a stated mid-market-rate approach and separate fees. OFX publishes information for Canadian transfers and partners. These published details make them options to compare, not universal price winners; confirm the current quote and terms for your transaction. - SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
Compare the final amount, not the headline rate
- Match the transaction. Use the same CAD amount, destination, funding method, and timing for each quote. A card purchase, cash withdrawal, transfer, and USD balance are not interchangeable comparisons.
- Record the outcome. For a transfer or exchange, write down how many USD the recipient receives after fees. For a card purchase, record the total CAD charged, including any conversion charge.
- List every cost. Include exchange-rate spread, card conversion charge, service or transfer fee, ATM fee, wire cost, funding cost, and any receiving-bank charge that applies.
- Use a dated benchmark carefully. Compare the provider’s rate with a Bank of Canada rate for context, while remembering that it is indicative—not necessarily a retail rate available to you.
- Include practical terms. Consider delivery time, access to an existing account or card, and card terms. For a credit-card cash advance, account for the advance fee and interest from the transaction date.
Requesting quotes at the same time helps avoid comparing one provider’s headline exchange rate with another’s all-in price.

What the Bank of Canada rate tells you
The Bank of Canada publishes indicative exchange rates and explains their publication timing on its Currency Converter. One historical lookup showed an average of 1 CAD = 0.7214 USD (or 1 USD = 1.3865 CAD) over September 3, 2025, through September 3, 2026. That is a period average, not a current consumer offer or a rate any bank or service is required to provide. Bank of Canada: daily exchange-rate lookup
