AI can be useful for drafting and revising routine marketing emails, and it can help with repeatable campaign tasks. Treat its output as a proposal, not approved copy: a person should verify claims and offer terms, check the audience and brand voice, and approve the message or sequence before it goes live. The company sending a commercial email remains responsible for compliance even when it uses a vendor.
What AI can—and cannot—do for email marketing
AI can produce a first draft, rewrite copy for a different tone or length, and suggest alternative subject lines. Email platforms may also offer AI-assisted personalization, segmentation, send-time recommendations, and campaign analytics. Salesforce describes these as possible email-marketing uses; their availability depends on the platform, and they do not guarantee better campaign results.

Use these tools to reduce repetitive work, not to transfer responsibility for the final message. HubSpot’s product guidance says to “Proofread and edit AI-generated content before publishing it” and to verify accuracy, especially for facts and statistics. That is product guidance, not evidence that AI-written campaigns outperform human-written ones.

| Task | Good use of AI | Human checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| First drafts | Generate a starting draft from a clear brief, audience, and offer. | Check every factual statement, brand voice, and whether the message fits its audience. |
| Revisions and variations | Try alternate phrasing, lengths, or subject lines for routine campaigns. | Make sure the subject accurately describes the email and the final version still reflects the intended offer. |
| Personalization and segmentation | Use platform features to propose audience groupings or tailored copy. | Check that the data and audience assumptions are appropriate, and that personalization is not misleading or out of context. |
| Send-time recommendations and analytics | Use platform analysis to inform scheduling and campaign review. | Judge recommendations against your campaign data and observed results; no universal data-quality threshold is established here. |
| Automated sequences | Draft or revise individual messages in a repeatable sequence. | Review the complete sequence, its triggers, timing, and every message before activation. |
The more repeatable and reversible the task, the easier it is to use AI safely. A draft that remains in an editor is different from a generated sequence that will send automatically. The higher the consequence of an error, or the more a message depends on personal relationship context, the more careful human review it deserves.

What a person must verify before sending
Review the email against authoritative information rather than trusting plausible-sounding copy. Check names, product details, prices, eligibility, dates, deadlines, and every statistic or other measurable claim. Confirm that promotional terms have not been invented or subtly changed, that the tone suits the brand and audience, and that the subject line accurately reflects the message.
For sensitive messages—such as communication with a key customer or an email that depends on personal history—use particular care. A model may not have the relationship context needed to judge what is appropriate. Decide whether a person should write or substantially revise the message rather than merely approve generated wording.

How to choose the right level of automation
- Start with the task: AI assistance is easier to supervise for reusable drafts and routine variations than for an end-to-end sequence.
- Consider the cost of an error: A rough sentence in a draft is easy to fix; a false price or compliance error in a live send can have wider consequences.
- Account for relationship context: Standard promotional copy is generally more repeatable than a personal note to a customer.
- Check the inputs: Recommendations are only as useful as the data and assumptions behind them. Evaluate results rather than treating platform suggestions as guarantees.
- Name the accountable people: Decide who approves copy, who checks campaign settings, and who monitors any platform or vendor running the send.
This is a practical decision aid, not a validated scoring system. When in doubt, keep AI in the drafting or recommendation stage and require a person to approve what will be sent.

U.S. commercial email obligations still apply
For U.S. commercial email, the FTC’s CAN-SPAM guidance describes requirements that include accurate sender and routing information, a subject line that accurately reflects the message, a valid physical postal address, and a clear way to opt out. The guide says opt-outs must be honored within 10 business days and that businesses must monitor vendors they hire. Hiring another company to send messages does not remove the sender’s legal responsibility. See the FTC CAN-SPAM Act compliance guide. These details describe the cited U.S. guidance; check current rules for the jurisdictions where you send email.

How common is AI use for email copy?
Litmus’s 2024 State of Email Trends report says 34% of surveyed email marketers who use generative AI use it for written content at least occasionally. That is a dated survey finding about that group, not a current universal adoption rate or proof of campaign effectiveness. Read it in the context of the Litmus 2024 report.

- Brief the tool: Supply the intended audience, purpose, approved offer details, tone, and any constraints. Avoid asking it to invent facts or terms.
- Generate a draft or variation: Keep the output in a reviewable state rather than publishing or activating it automatically.
- Verify the substance: Compare claims, prices, eligibility, dates, and statistics with the relevant authoritative sources.
- Edit for the reader: Check clarity, brand voice, audience fit, subject accuracy, and relationship context.
- Review the send setup: For a sequence, inspect triggers, timing, recipients, and every message; also check applicable compliance requirements.
- Assign approval and monitoring: Record who authorizes publication and who is responsible for the platform or vendor after launch.
