Shopify vs. Squarespace for a Growing Lifestyle Brand: Costs, Features, and the Right Fit (2026)

Shopify is the stronger default to investigate when a lifestyle brand expects multichannel sales, more staff, complex fulfillment, or retail growth. Squarespace is a credible alternative when the brand wants its editorial website and store tightly integrated and its catalog, order volume, and payment needs fit the selected plan. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on sales channels, monthly orders, average order value, team size, inventory locations, shipping workflow, and international requirements.

This comparison uses US pricing checked October 13, 2026. Prices and features can change, so verify the live plan pages before signing up. Shopify’s current US plans are listed at Shopify’s pricing page; Squarespace’s plans and feature matrix are at Squarespace’s pricing page.

The short decision

Choose Shopify first when… Choose Squarespace first when…
Sales come from several channels, such as a web store, social platforms, marketplaces, pop-ups, or a permanent retail location. The brand’s main priority is a polished content-led website with an integrated store.
Inventory is spread across multiple locations, fulfillment rules are getting complicated, or additional staff need separate access. The catalog and order flow are straightforward and the team can work within the selected plan’s limits.
You need dedicated commerce operations, shipping tools, broader app integrations, or a path to enterprise-scale plans. You want substantial commerce features on every current plan and can choose Core, Plus, or Advanced to remove the Basic plan’s commerce transaction fee.
International selling, local currencies, duties estimates, or deeper channel controls are central to growth. International sales are limited or still being evaluated and you are prepared to confirm payment, currency, tax, and destination-market limits.

That rule is conditional, not a performance claim. The available evidence is official plan and help documentation rather than an independent head-to-head test.

Compare total cost, not the headline subscription

A platform’s advertised monthly rate is only one part of the bill. Model the recurring subscription, the platform’s commerce transaction fee, card processing, point-of-sale hardware or software, and any apps or integrations that are essential to the operating model.

Use this structure with the brand’s own numbers:

Monthly platform cost = subscription + (online sales × platform transaction fee) + card-processing charges + POS costs + required apps/integrations

Payment method matters. Shopify’s table combines Shopify Payments card rates with a listed fee for third-party transactions, while Squarespace says its fees depend on the payment method. Taxes, optional services, hardware, and processor-specific charges can change the final amount.

Platform and plan Annual billing (monthly equivalent) Month to month Published fee or limitation
Shopify Basic $29/mo $39/mo Online standard card rate 2.9% + $0.30; a 2% third-party transaction fee is listed.
Shopify Grow $79/mo $105/mo Online standard card rate 2.7% + $0.30; up to five staff accounts.
Shopify Advanced $299/mo $399/mo Online standard card rate 2.5% + $0.30; live third-party shipping rates are listed.
Shopify Plus From $2,300/mo Not listed Starting price shown for a three-year term for complex businesses.
Squarespace Basic $19/mo $25/mo 2% online-store transaction fee; card processing is additional.
Squarespace Core $29/mo $39/mo No commerce transaction fee; domestic Squarespace Payments rate listed as 2.9% + $0.30.
Squarespace Plus $49/mo $65/mo No commerce transaction fee; domestic Squarespace Payments rate listed as 2.7% + $0.30.
Squarespace Advanced $99/mo $139/mo No commerce transaction fee; domestic Squarespace Payments rate listed as 2.5% + $0.30.

Shopify’s figures and plan details come from its US pricing page (shopify.com/pricing). Squarespace’s plan prices and feature list come from its US pricing page (squarespace.com/pricing), while its fee explanations are in the Squarespace Help Center plan-fee guide. Rates can vary by payment method and location.

How the fee trade-off works

Squarespace Basic has the lowest annual-billing subscription in this table, but its 2% online-store transaction fee applies in addition to card processing. Core costs the same annual-billing monthly equivalent as Shopify Basic and removes Squarespace’s commerce transaction fee, but the card-processing rate still applies. Shopify Basic has the higher subscription than Squarespace Basic and lists a 2.9% + $0.30 standard online card rate, plus a 2% fee when a third-party transaction route applies.

Do not call one platform cheaper without entering the brand’s order count, average order value, payment mix, and required features. A brand with many low-value orders can feel the per-transaction component differently from a brand with fewer high-value orders. A higher tier can also be cheaper operationally if it removes a fee or replaces paid add-ons the team would otherwise need. Squarespace’s help guidance explicitly notes that higher-tier fees may be offset by lower rates and fees as transaction volume grows (Squarespace fee guidance).

What Shopify is built to handle

Shopify’s plan presentation emphasizes commerce operations rather than only page design. The feature set highlighted for the plans includes inventory management, selling on social channels and marketplaces, shipping discounts and labels, staff-account tiers, and integrations with thousands of apps (Shopify pricing).

Inventory and fulfillment

Shopify Basic lists ten inventory locations. That matters if stock is split among a studio, warehouse, pop-up storage, or other fulfillment points. As operations become more involved, the value is less about the number of products on a page and more about keeping availability, orders, and shipping decisions coordinated.

Shopify Advanced lists live third-party shipping rates. A brand that needs carrier-calculated rates at checkout should verify the exact carrier, country, and account requirements before choosing a plan; the presence of the feature in the plan table does not guarantee every carrier scenario.

Channels and apps

Shopify foregrounds selling through social channels and marketplaces. That is relevant when the website is only one part of the customer-acquisition plan. Its app ecosystem can connect additional systems, but every app adds cost, permissions, data flows, and maintenance. Treat “thousands of apps” as breadth, not as a promise that a particular integration will be free, compatible, or well maintained.

Staff access

Shopify Grow lists up to five staff accounts. If a founder, operations lead, customer-support specialist, and fulfillment staff all need access, count the people who require their own logins and permissions before selecting Basic. Avoid sharing one account: it weakens accountability and makes it harder to limit sensitive actions.

Scaling path

Shopify Plus is listed from $2,300 per month for a three-year term for complex businesses. That is a materially different commitment from the self-serve plans and should be evaluated only after the brand has documented its volume, markets, integrations, support expectations, and contract requirements.

What Squarespace includes across its plans

Squarespace positions its plans as a combined website, content, and commerce system. Its current plan guidance says products, content, and memberships can be sold on any plan, with fees decreasing as plans are upgraded (Squarespace plan-selection guidance).

Catalog and merchandising

The pricing page lists integrated ecommerce, product and catalog management, unlimited products and services, social catalog promotion, abandoned-cart recovery, subscription goods, and product-status labels. Those features cover many lifestyle-brand basics: a lookbook or journal can live beside the store, products can be promoted socially, and a customer who leaves checkout can be re-engaged.

Advanced merchandising capabilities and US shipping labels are plan-dependent. Higher plans list more integrations and sales analytics. Confirm which specific merchandising control, shipping workflow, or reporting view is included in the plan you are considering rather than assuming that every commerce feature is available at every tier.

When Basic may fit

Basic can suit a small, uncomplicated online operation that values the integrated site experience and has modeled the 2% online-store transaction fee. Its lower subscription is not automatically the lowest total cost: processor charges remain, and the percentage fee grows with sales.

When to examine Core, Plus, or Advanced

Core removes Squarespace’s commerce transaction fee at the listed annual-billing equivalent of $29 per month. Plus and Advanced list lower domestic Squarespace Payments card rates of 2.7% + $0.30 and 2.5% + $0.30, respectively, and add plan-specific capabilities. Compare the incremental subscription with the fee savings and the value of any extra analytics, integrations, merchandising, or shipping features the brand will actually use.

Card processing and platform transaction fees are different

These two charges are easy to confuse:

  • Card processing: the percentage and fixed amount charged for processing a card payment. The published domestic rates in the table apply to the stated payment setup and can vary by method or region.
  • Platform transaction fee: an additional commerce fee charged by the platform under certain plans or payment routes. Squarespace Basic lists 2%; Core, Plus, and Advanced list no commerce transaction fee. Shopify lists a 2% third-party transaction fee on Basic, while its card rates are shown separately.

Build a spreadsheet that separates both lines. Include refunds, alternative payment methods, taxes, currency conversion, and any processor-specific exceptions if they apply to the brand. Never multiply a published card rate by revenue and assume that is the entire payments bill.

In-person selling and POS

Both platforms can support some in-person selling, but their packaging and availability differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shopify POS

Shopify lists casual selling at pop-ups and events on paid plans. POS Pro is listed at $89 per location per month. A brand doing occasional markets may need only the included casual capability; a brand operating a staffed store should price POS Pro, compatible hardware, staff roles, inventory behavior, and the number of locations.

Squarespace POS

Squarespace lists POS across its plans. Its pricing information says the Squarespace mobile-app POS is US-only on iOS and Android, processes payments through Square, and synchronizes inventory, customers, and sales analytics. Before committing, confirm supported hardware, staff permissions, payment availability, and how stock is synchronized for the exact setup.

Questions to answer before a market or store launch

  • Which phones or tablets can run the POS app, and which card readers or printers are supported?
  • Can the team sell when connectivity is unreliable, and how are offline orders reconciled?
  • Do in-person and online returns follow the same rules?
  • Does each physical location need separate software or a paid add-on?
  • Are staff roles granular enough for cashiers, managers, and fulfillment staff?

Those operational details can outweigh a small difference in the advertised subscription.

International growth needs a separate check

Shopify’s plan table lists localized selling tools, local currencies, local domains, duties and tax estimates, and a 1% international card-rate addition. If the brand expects several countries, these tools make Shopify the more obvious platform to investigate first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The supplied Squarespace pricing material mentions international-card surcharges and currency-conversion fees, but it does not establish equivalent global-commerce workflows. Treat Squarespace international selling as a verification project: check destination-market payment support, currency behavior, tax and duties handling, shipping labels, and legal requirements for every country the brand plans to serve. Do not infer parity from the presence of a general “sell internationally” option.

Make the decision from the brand’s operating profile

Write down the answers before comparing plans. The title alone does not establish product count, monthly orders, average order value, fulfillment method, wholesale needs, shipping countries, payment methods, or team size.

1. Map the sales channels

  • Website only: compare Squarespace Basic or Core with Shopify Basic using actual order economics.
  • Website plus social and marketplaces: investigate Shopify’s channel tools and the integrations required to keep listings and inventory aligned.
  • Pop-ups or retail: compare each platform’s POS cost, hardware, staff access, and inventory synchronization.
  • Wholesale or multiple storefronts: document the required workflows first; do not assume a consumer-store plan covers them.

2. Count products, locations, and people

List active products, variants, subscriptions, inventory locations, fulfillment partners, and every person who needs a login. Ten Shopify Basic inventory locations and the five staff accounts listed for Shopify Grow may be decisive for one brand and irrelevant for another. On Squarespace, check whether the chosen plan includes the needed shipping, analytics, merchandising, and integration features.

3. Model three months of real orders

Use a representative month, a launch or holiday month, and a slower month. Record gross online sales, number of orders, average order value, card mix, refunds, and international share. Apply the subscription, platform fee, processor rate, fixed per-order amount, POS charges, and essential add-ons. This reveals whether a lower subscription is being consumed by a percentage fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Test the fulfillment path on paper

Describe what happens from checkout to pick, pack, label, shipment, refund, and inventory adjustment. Add split shipments, out-of-stock items, exchanges, and a pop-up sale if those situations are realistic. Shopify’s operations-oriented tools may justify its higher starting subscription; Squarespace may be sufficient when the process remains simple.

5. Set a 12-month trigger

Choose the condition that would force a plan review: a second warehouse, a fifth staff user, a marketplace launch, a new country, a retail location, or a target order volume. Compare the cost and migration effort of reaching that trigger on each platform now, not after the workflow is already strained.

A practical selection guide

Pick Shopify Basic or Grow when operations are the constraint

Start with Shopify’s plans when the brand needs the commerce system to coordinate channels, inventory locations, shipping, and staff. Basic may be enough for a small team; Grow becomes relevant when up to five staff accounts, lower listed card rates, or expanding operations justify its higher subscription.

Pick Shopify Advanced when shipping and scale justify it

Advanced is the tier to examine when live third-party shipping rates, lower listed card rates, and more sophisticated operational requirements matter. Validate the exact carrier and integration requirements before treating the plan as a complete solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick Squarespace Basic when simplicity wins and the fee is acceptable

Basic can be rational for a small catalog, uncomplicated online orders, and a brand that values a unified content-and-store experience. Include the 2% commerce transaction fee in every forecast.

Pick Squarespace Core, Plus, or Advanced when the integrated site remains the priority

Core removes the commerce transaction fee; Plus and Advanced add lower listed domestic card rates and progressively broader capabilities. Select the tier by matching actual needs for analytics, integrations, merchandising, shipping, and sales volume—not by choosing the highest tier preemptively.

Launch checklist

  1. Record the brand’s products, variants, subscriptions, inventory locations, order volume, average order value, payment methods, team members, sales channels, and countries served.
  2. Build a side-by-side 12-month cost model using annual-billing and month-to-month scenarios, platform fees, processing, POS, hardware, and required integrations.
  3. Confirm which payment processor will be used and separate card-processing charges from platform transaction fees.
  4. Verify shipping labels, live rates, taxes, duties, currencies, and international-card charges for the destinations that matter.
  5. Run a staff-access test: identify who needs a login, what each person can do, and whether the selected plan supports that structure.
  6. Document the online-to-in-person inventory flow if the brand sells at markets or retail locations.
  7. Choose the plan that covers the next operating stage without paying for features the team cannot use, then set a calendar date to recheck prices and limits.

Bottom-line recommendation

For a growing US lifestyle brand, investigate Shopify first when growth means more channels, more staff, multiple inventory locations, complex fulfillment, or serious retail and international operations. Choose Squarespace when the brand’s competitive edge is an integrated editorial website and store, the catalog and workflows are manageable, and Core, Plus, or Advanced provide the needed commerce features at an acceptable total cost. For a small online-only brand, the decisive comparison is usually Squarespace Basic’s 2% transaction fee versus Shopify Basic’s higher subscription and listed payment structure, calculated with the brand’s own orders and average order value.
