Shortlist themes that meet your must-haves, then preview them with your own products and check the storefront on mobile and desktop before deciding.
Start with what your store needs to do
Before browsing, list the pages, templates and customer tasks your store depends on. Consider product discovery, collection browsing, search, product details and editorial content, plus specific needs such as filters, quick buy, related products, video or an FAQ page. Shopify’s Theme Store lets you search by features; its examples include terms such as product filtering and quick buy.

Industry categories can help you discover layouts, but they do not restrict how a theme can be used. Treat a category as a browsing aid, then judge the theme by its actual features and how it handles your catalog.

Read each candidate’s current feature list and inspect its templates and sections. A polished preview does not prove that the theme supports every Shopify feature your store needs. Shopify recommends checking theme features before choosing one, because themes do not all support every Shopify feature (Choosing themes).

If filters are essential
Confirm that the theme supports storefront filtering and inspect how filters appear on collection and search pages. Shopify’s Search & Discovery app lets merchants configure filters such as availability, product type and color, but an incompatible theme will not display them. Installing or configuring the app alone does not add storefront filter support, and some unsupported third-party themes may not show a clear warning (Add storefront filtering).
Preview the theme with your own store content
Add a candidate theme as a draft and preview it with your products and brand styling. Shopify allows merchants to try and customize paid themes in the editor before buying; if you purchase the theme, those customizations are retained. You must purchase a paid theme before publishing it. Shopify’s current guidance allows up to 19 paid themes in trial at once, subject to its instructions (Adding, previewing, and buying themes).
Use the preview to test the whole shopping journey, not just the homepage:

- Browse a collection and use search to find products.
- Open product pages and check whether the information, variants and images are easy to understand.
- Try the navigation and any must-have features, including filters or quick buy.
- Check how the theme handles your actual product photography, including its image shapes and crops.
A preview shows how your store content fits the theme; it is not permission to publish an unpaid theme. Nor does an attractive preview establish that the theme will improve sales or conversion.

Inspect mobile and desktop layouts
Shopify says Theme Store themes are responsive, meaning they adapt to screen size. Still, responsive behavior does not guarantee that every layout will suit your products or content. In the theme editor, use the screen-size view to inspect pages and images at different sizes, as Shopify recommends in its theme troubleshooting guidance.
Check the same important journeys on both mobile and desktop: navigation, collection browsing, search and product details. Look for cramped content, awkward image crops or controls that are difficult to use at the size being viewed.
Rank #4
Compare support and likely customization work
Support depends on who made the theme. Shopify develops its free themes and may help with certain predefined customizations. Paid themes in the Theme Store are made by third-party developers, who provide general theme support and updates. Shopify says paid-theme developers do not provide customizations; for more extensive work, it points merchants toward a Shopify Partner.
The theme editor covers settings and rearranging content. If the layout or behavior you want is not available there, Shopify says theme code can be edited using HTML, CSS and Liquid. Duplicate the theme as a backup before making code changes (Customizing themes). If you expect bespoke design or behavior, account for the work and skills it may require instead of assuming it is included with the theme.

Understand the license and purchase terms
A Theme Store theme is licensed only to the store where it was originally bought. Shopify says unlicensed themes are not eligible for support or updates. Its buying guidance describes third-party Theme Store theme transactions as final sale and says the theme developer cannot provide a refund. Review the current purchase terms and support details before buying (Adding, previewing, and buying themes).
Shopify also recommends against installing themes from outside its Theme Store: they are not vetted for quality or compatibility with core Shopify features and may cause unexpected behavior (Theme architecture versions and sources).
Use a practical shortlist to make the choice
When several themes remain, compare them against the requirements you identified rather than relying on a universal ranking:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

|---|---|
| Required features | Does the theme support every must-have feature, including storefront filters if needed? |
| Templates and navigation | Do its page layouts and navigation suit your products and the way customers find them? |
| Real-store presentation | Do your own catalog, images and brand styling work on mobile and desktop? |
| Support and customization | Who provides support and updates, and will you need code-level work or a Shopify Partner? |
| License and purchase terms | Are you comfortable with the store-specific license and the stated purchase conditions? |
Price is one consideration, not a performance measure. The Shopify guidance cited here does not establish that paid themes are inherently faster, convert better or suit every store better than free themes. Choose the candidate that meets your functional requirements and works with your real storefront content.
