Choose OpenRun if water resistance is your priority; choose the original OpenRun Pro only if its longer claimed battery life and bass-focused design matter more and you can verify that you are buying the discontinued model. Shokz rates OpenRun IP67, while OpenRun Pro is IP55. OpenRun is rated for up to 8 hours, and OpenRun Pro for up to 10 hours with a claimed five-minute charge delivering up to 1.5 hours of use. Neither cited model is intended for swimming, and the original Pro is now marked discontinued by Shokz.
OpenRun and OpenRun Pro at a glance
Both headphones use an open-ear bone-conduction design. Instead of sealing the ear canal, they sit near the cheekbones and leave the ears open. That can make it easier to remain aware of nearby sounds, but it is not a safety guarantee: runners still need to monitor traffic, cyclists and other hazards and follow local rules.

OpenRun: IP67, but not a swimming headphone
OpenRun has the stronger stated protection rating. Shokz lists it as IP67 and adds the explicit warning: “Not intended for swimming.” IP67 generally indicates protection against dust and temporary immersion under specified laboratory conditions, but the manufacturer’s warning controls how you should use this product. Treat it as a better choice for rain, sweat and accidental splashes than the Pro, not as a device for pool workouts or open-water swimming.
#1 Best Overall
- Unparalleled Audio and Premium sound - Dual drivers combine the clear highs of Bone Conduction Tech with the deep bass of Air Conduction Tech for 12 hours of powerful, 3D audio.Perfect for musical motivation during workouts and runs.
- Open-Ear Awareness - SHOKZ's signature open-ear design helps you power through your workouts while keeping you safely aware of your surroundings. Leak-free listening ensures your audio remains for your ears only
- Secure Stable, Lightweight Fit - The weight-optimized design of this unibody frame integrates a Ni-Ti alloy memory wire and ergonomic ear hooks. The result is a secure, comfortable fit that defies slips and shift even during gym sessions or cycling.
- Dedicated EQ Modes - Customize your audio experience with our dedicated EQ modes on the Shokz App. Enjoy pure bone conduction sound with the newly launched Classic Mode, or boost your audio in noisy environments with Volume Boost Mode.
- Crystal-Clear Calls - Strategically positioned dual wind-resistant microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm filter out 96.5% of background noise, including wind at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.
Rain can still expose a headset to conditions that differ from a certification test. Keep the charging contacts dry before connecting a cable, and do not assume that a high rating protects against every form of water, pressure or chemical exposure.
OpenRun Pro: IP55 for sweat and ordinary splashes
The original OpenRun Pro is rated IP55. That rating is lower than OpenRun’s IP67 and is presented by Shokz as sweat and water resistance. It is appropriate to think of the Pro as a workout headset for perspiration and light splashing, not as an immersion-resistant model. If you regularly run in heavy rain, train outdoors in wet weather or want more tolerance for accidental drops into water, OpenRun is the safer choice on the stated specifications.
What neither rating proves
Neither cited source supports calling either model suitable for swimming. Water-resistance ratings can also change as seals, charging covers and materials age. Avoid using a rating as a promise of lifetime protection, particularly on a used or heavily worn headset.
Battery life and charging: Pro wins on paper
OpenRun’s 8-hour claim
Shokz rates OpenRun for up to 8 hours of battery life. “Up to” is important: playback volume, wireless conditions, temperature, call use and battery age affect the result. Eight hours can cover many training sessions and a workday of intermittent listening, but a frequent traveler or ultramarathon runner may need to recharge sooner than the headline figure suggests.
OpenRun Pro’s 10-hour claim and rapid top-up
The original Pro is rated for up to 10 hours, giving it a two-hour advantage in the published maximum. Shokz also claims that a five-minute charge can provide up to 1.5 hours of use. The Pro specification sheet dated April 7, 2026 lists a one-hour charge time for a full charge. Those are manufacturer figures, not independently measured endurance results.
Rank #2
- Open-Ear Comfort - OpenRun’s innovative design features a featherweight, wraparound frame and wireless, open-ear fit for comfortable, earbud-free listening. Includes Shokz headband.

- 8 Hours Paytime - Enjoy eight continuous hours of music, calls and podcasts with our Bluetooth headphones. OpenRun also features a 10-minute quick charge for up to 1.5 hours of battery life. (Quick Charge Version of Aftershokz Aeropex).Universal compatibility: Seamlessly pairs with Android, iOS, Windows, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Includes Magnetic Induction.
- Outstanding Sound Quality & Clear Calls - Bone conduction technology uses vibrations to transmit sound through your cheekbone directly to your inner ear for a premium audio experience.Ensures excellent call quality for clear conversations.
The quick-charge claim matters when you discover an empty headset before a run or commute. It does not remove the need to carry the correct charging cable or to plan around a full charge when you will be away from power for an extended period.
How to use the battery numbers when deciding
- Choose OpenRun if eight hours is sufficient and the higher water-resistance rating matters more than charging intervals.
- Choose the original Pro if you value the extra two hours of stated maximum endurance and can use its lower water rating responsibly.
- Do not treat either rating as guaranteed real-world runtime, especially at high volume or with frequent calls.
Sound technology: a design distinction, not a proven ranking
What Shokz says about OpenRun
OpenRun uses Shokz’s eighth-generation bone-conduction platform and PremiumPitch 2.0+. These are the manufacturer’s technology labels for the model. Because the ears remain open, the listening experience differs from sealed in-ear headphones: outside sound remains present, and bass perception can be affected by fit and the surrounding environment.
What Shokz says about OpenRun Pro
The original Pro uses ninth-generation Shokz TurboPitch and adds two bass enhancers. Shokz positions those changes as the Pro’s sound advantage, particularly for listeners who want more bass from an open-ear design. That is a description of the product’s design and marketing position, not an independent finding that every listener will hear a superior result.
How to choose for your listening habits
If podcasts, spoken instructions and background music are your main uses, both models are designed around keeping the ear open. If you care most about bass-heavy music, the Pro’s dedicated bass-enhancement hardware is the more relevant specification. Your result will still depend on placement, head size, volume and ambient noise, so buy from a seller with a return policy you understand when possible.
Specifications that may affect ownership
The April 7, 2026 OpenRun Pro specification sheet lists the following details:
Rank #3
- Unparalleled Audio - Dual drivers combine the clear highs of Bone Conduction Tech with the deep bass of Air Conduction Tech for 12 hours of powerful, 3D audio.
- Open-Ear Awareness - SHOKZ's signature open-ear design helps you power through your workouts while keeping you safely aware of your surroundings. Leak-free listening ensures your audio remains for your ears only

- Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity.
- A stated wireless range of 33 feet (10 meters).
- Product weight of 29 g.
- IP55 sweat resistance.
- Up to 10 hours of battery life.
- A one-hour charging time.
- A two-pin magnetic charging port.
The cited OpenRun material does not provide matching values for all of those fields, so it would be misleading to declare the Pro lighter, faster to charge or longer-ranged than OpenRun. The absence of a published OpenRun value here is not evidence that the model lacks a feature; it means the comparison material does not establish a number.

Fit and sizing: Standard versus Mini
OpenRun sizing
OpenRun is offered in Standard and Mini sizes. Shokz says the Mini band is 0.83 inches shorter than the Standard band. That is a dimensional difference, not a guarantee that Mini will fit every smaller head better or that Standard will fit every larger head.
OpenRun Pro sizing
The OpenRun Pro family is also listed in Standard and Mini sizes. Because an open-ear headset rests around the ears and across the back of the head, a band that is too loose can move during running, while one that is too short can create pressure. Use Shokz’s current sizing guidance and check the seller’s exchange terms before choosing a size.
Why fit matters for bone-conduction sound
Bone-conduction transducers need consistent contact near the cheekbones. Small changes in placement can alter perceived volume and bass. A theoretically stronger audio design will not help if the band shifts or the transducers sit away from the recommended position. Try the size that keeps the headset stable without pressing uncomfortably, and reassess fit while moving rather than only while seated.
Availability: the original Pro is discontinued
Shokz’s current OpenRun Pro product page displays “Discontinued.” That status means availability, condition and warranty coverage can vary by region and seller. A listing titled “OpenRun Pro” may be old inventory, refurbished stock, a used unit or a different model, so verify the exact model before paying.

Shokz’s OpenRun page shows OpenRun Pro 2 in the current lineup. Pro 2 is a separate model; do not assume that its specifications, water rating, battery claim or sound hardware are identical to the original Pro. If you are shopping new, compare Pro 2 as its own product and confirm the specifications for your market.
Checklist for a discontinued-model listing
- Confirm that the title and photos identify the original OpenRun Pro rather than OpenRun, OpenRun Pro 2 or a generic open-ear headset.
- Check whether the unit is new, used or refurbished and read the stated warranty and return period.
- Verify that the package includes a compatible two-pin magnetic charging cable, or budget for a replacement whose compatibility is explicitly stated.
- Compare the seller’s regional model information with the original Pro specifications: Bluetooth 5.1, 29 g, IP55, up to 10 hours and a one-hour charge time.
- For a used headset, ask about battery condition and inspect the charging contacts for corrosion or damage before relying on it for long sessions.
Which model is better for common use cases?
Running in rain or heavy sweat
OpenRun is the better fit because its stated IP67 rating exceeds the Pro’s IP55 rating. Keep the manufacturer’s swimming exclusion in mind: choose OpenRun for wet-weather running, not for swimming.
Long sessions and irregular access to a charger
The original Pro has the stronger published battery specification: up to 10 hours versus OpenRun’s up to 8 hours. Its five-minute quick-charge claim is useful when you need a short top-up before leaving. Confirm that a discontinued unit’s battery still holds a charge if buying used.
Bass-focused music
The Pro is the logical specification-based choice because Shokz gives it TurboPitch and two added bass enhancers. This does not establish a universal sound-quality ranking; it identifies the model whose design is explicitly aimed at enhanced bass.

OpenRun is the less complicated purchase because it remains listed in Shokz’s lineup. The original Pro’s discontinued status introduces more uncertainty around stock, condition, warranty and replacement accessories. If you want a current Pro-branded product, evaluate OpenRun Pro 2 separately rather than treating the old Pro as current.

Small heads or uncertain fit
Both families offer a Mini option. OpenRun’s Mini band is specified as 0.83 inches shorter; use the manufacturer’s sizing guidance and a return policy instead of assuming that Mini is automatically best for anyone with a smaller head.
A practical buying decision
Use this sequence to make the choice without overvaluing a single specification:
- Set your water requirement. If you expect rain or substantial sweat, start with OpenRun’s IP67 rating. If you need a swimming headphone, stop: neither cited model is identified as suitable for swimming.
- Set your endurance requirement. If eight hours covers your typical use, OpenRun’s rating may be adequate. If you routinely need more, the Pro’s 10-hour claim and five-minute quick-charge claim are meaningful advantages.
- Decide whether bass hardware is worth a discontinued purchase. The Pro’s TurboPitch system and added bass enhancers are its main sound-design differentiators, but they do not come with an independent comparative test in the available evidence.
- Choose the size. Compare Standard and Mini using Shokz’s current guidance, then confirm exchange terms.
- Verify the exact listing. For the original Pro, confirm model identity, condition, warranty, accessories and regional availability before ordering.
Care and failure checks
The headset was exposed to rain
Stop using it until the exterior and charging contacts are dry. Do not connect a magnetic charger while moisture is present. The IP rating is not a reason to charge a wet device or to assume that repeated immersion is harmless.
The battery does not match the headline number
Check playback volume, call frequency, wireless distance and battery age before concluding that the unit is defective. “Up to” ratings describe a maximum under stated test conditions, not a guaranteed runtime. A discontinued Pro bought used may have substantially less capacity than a new unit.
The sound is weak or bass is missing
Recheck transducer placement and band stability, then test at a safe volume. Open-ear bone-conduction sound changes with fit and ambient noise. Do not infer from the Pro’s bass-enhancer specification that every environment or listener will hear the same improvement.
The headset will not charge
Inspect and dry the two-pin magnetic contacts on an OpenRun Pro, then confirm that the cable is designed for that connector. If the unit is used or old, check for corrosion, bent contacts or a depleted battery. A replacement cable should be identified as compatible at the listing level; the available specifications confirm the connector type but do not validate a particular replacement product.
Bottom line
OpenRun is the straightforward recommendation for most runners who want the stronger stated water protection and a currently listed model. The original OpenRun Pro makes sense only for a buyer who specifically values its up-to-10-hour battery claim, five-minute quick-charge claim or bass-focused hardware and is comfortable verifying a discontinued listing. Treat both as open-ear training headphones rather than swimming devices, and treat all battery and sound claims as manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results.
