Choose the Shokz OpenRun if you need the lighter headset, the stronger IP67 water rating, or the lower reference price. Choose the OpenRun Pro 2 if you value up to four additional hours of listening, a newer dual-driver sound system, app-based EQ controls and a more premium presentation.
Both are open-ear Shokz designs intended to let you hear your surroundings while listening. The decision is not simply “old versus new”: OpenRun is the better wet-weather and value choice, while OpenRun Pro 2 is the better long-session and sound-customization choice.

Buy OpenRun for rain, sweat and value
OpenRun is the practical choice for runners who regularly train in wet conditions, rinse their headset after workouts or simply want the lightest frame. Its IP67 rating is the clearest advantage in this comparison. Shokz’s own 2025 summary characterizes it as the option for “Extreme weather / IP67 / rinse-safe.”
#1 Best Overall
- Unparalleled Audio and Premium sound - Dual drivers combine the clear highs of Bone Conduction Tech with the deep bass of Air Conduction Tech for 12 hours of powerful, 3D audio.Perfect for musical motivation during workouts and runs.
- Open-Ear Awareness - SHOKZ's signature open-ear design helps you power through your workouts while keeping you safely aware of your surroundings. Leak-free listening ensures your audio remains for your ears only
- Secure Stable, Lightweight Fit - The weight-optimized design of this unibody frame integrates a Ni-Ti alloy memory wire and ergonomic ear hooks. The result is a secure, comfortable fit that defies slips and shift even during gym sessions or cycling.
- Dedicated EQ Modes - Customize your audio experience with our dedicated EQ modes on the Shokz App. Enjoy pure bone conduction sound with the newly launched Classic Mode, or boost your audio in noisy environments with Volume Boost Mode.
- Crystal-Clear Calls - Strategically positioned dual wind-resistant microphones and an AI noise reduction algorithm filter out 96.5% of background noise, including wind at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour.
The simpler design also suits listeners who mainly want spoken-word audio, calls and music during exercise without spending more for app controls. If your sessions fit inside its rated battery window and you do not need EQ modes, the Pro 2’s extra features may not improve your experience enough to justify the premium.
Buy OpenRun Pro 2 for long days and adjustable sound
OpenRun Pro 2 is the stronger choice when eight hours is not enough, when you often forget to charge before leaving, or when you want to adjust the sound rather than accept a fixed tuning. Its newer dual-driver air-and-bone-conduction approach is designed to provide a fuller presentation than the traditional OpenRun design, and Shokz materials report app support with multiple EQ modes.
The premium model also makes sense for commuters, travelers and people who wear open-ear headphones across several activities in one day. Its shorter emergency charge requirement is useful when a few minutes at an outlet is all you have. You must, however, accept the lower IP55 rating and the modest increase in weight.
Water resistance: IP67 versus IP55
Do not treat these ratings as interchangeable. IP67 and IP55 describe different levels of protection, and the difference matters more in real use than the model names suggest.

What OpenRun’s IP67 means for training
OpenRun’s IP67 rating gives it the stronger margin for heavy rain, intense sweating, rinsing and other wet-training situations. That is why it is the safer pick for outdoor runners who cannot control the weather or for users who routinely clean equipment under running water. Shokz specifically presents the model as rinse-safe in its comparison material.
Where OpenRun Pro 2’s IP55 rating fits
OpenRun Pro 2’s IP55 rating is still intended for everyday exposure to sweat and light weather, but it is not equivalent to OpenRun’s protection. If your use includes prolonged downpours, deliberate rinsing or very wet training, the newer model’s sound and battery advantages should not override that environmental requirement.
Think of the choice as a risk decision: choose OpenRun when water exposure is unavoidable; choose Pro 2 when your normal use is relatively dry and its extra listening time or sound controls matter more. Regardless of model, keep charging contacts and any exposed ports dry before charging, and follow the care instructions supplied with the headset.

What “up to” means
These are manufacturer ratings rather than a guaranteed runtime for every listener. Actual endurance varies with volume, call use, environmental conditions and other usage factors. Treat the figures as planning limits: OpenRun targets a normal day of intermittent listening, while Pro 2 gives you a larger buffer for continuous use.
Pro 2’s short-charge advantage
Shokz specifies that a 5-minute charge gives OpenRun Pro 2 about 2.5 hours of music. That feature is particularly useful if you discover a low battery immediately before a run or commute. The supplied comparison does not state an equivalent time for OpenRun’s quick-charge feature, so do not assume both models recover the same amount in five minutes.
Matching battery life to your routine
- Short workouts and occasional listening: OpenRun’s 8-hour rating is generally ample, especially if you recharge after use.
- All-day commuting or travel: Pro 2’s 12-hour rating reduces the chance of carrying a charger or ending a trip without audio.
- Multiple workouts between charges: Pro 2’s larger reserve and documented 5-minute boost provide more flexibility.
- Infrequent charging opportunities: Select Pro 2 unless water protection is the overriding requirement.
Sound and listening experience
OpenRun’s traditional bone-conduction approach
OpenRun uses the simpler, established bone-conduction design. It delivers audio without sealing the ear canal, which is useful when you need to remain aware of traffic, teammates, announcements or other activity around you. Its straightforward tuning is a good fit for podcasts, calls and exercise music where situational awareness matters more than extensive sound personalization.
What changes with OpenRun Pro 2
OpenRun Pro 2 adds a newer dual-driver system that combines air and bone conduction. Shokz positions this architecture as a way to provide a fuller sound, and its materials report app support with multiple EQ modes. You can therefore choose a tuning that better matches spoken word, general music or your personal preference instead of relying on one fixed presentation.

OpenRun Pro also features a 5-minute quick charge for up to 1.5 hours of battery life.Universal compatibility: Seamlessly pairs with Android, iOS, Windows, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices.Includes Magnetic Induction.
“Sounds better” remains partly subjective. The Pro 2 has the more advanced hardware and more control, but listeners who value simplicity, lighter weight or maximum water protection may prefer OpenRun overall. The open-ear design also means neither model is intended to behave like a sealed in-ear monitor; environmental noise remains part of the listening experience.
Awareness versus isolation
Tom’s Guide described the open-ear arrangement as leaving the ear canal open so users can stay aware of their surroundings during workouts. That benefit is central to both models. It is useful for outdoor safety and conversation, but it also means a loud street, gym or wind can compete with what you are hearing. If you need isolation from surrounding noise, neither model’s open-ear design is aimed at that job.
Weight, comfort and fit
Shokz comparison material lists OpenRun at approximately 26 g. The standard OpenRun Pro 2 specification lists approximately 30.3 g, making Pro 2 about 4.3 g heavier. That is a small numerical difference, but weight at the back of the head can become noticeable during long runs or when you wear a headset for many consecutive hours.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When the lighter OpenRun matters
- You are sensitive to anything resting behind your ears or neck.
- You run long distances and want the least noticeable frame.
- You prefer a minimal design with fewer controls and software decisions.
- You use the headset primarily for short workouts, where the battery advantage of Pro 2 is less important.
When Pro 2’s added weight is a fair trade
- You regularly listen beyond OpenRun’s rated 8-hour window.
- You want the newer sound system and EQ options.
- You value a quick five-minute top-up that provides about 2.5 hours of music.
- You are willing to trade a little weight for a more feature-rich model.
Fit is personal, so try the selected model with the activities you actually perform. Check that the band remains stable when you turn your head, that controls are reachable without breaking stride and that the transducers sit comfortably in the intended position. A headset that is technically lighter is not automatically more comfortable for every head shape.

Is OpenRun Pro 2 worth the extra money?
Shokz’s 2025 US comparison used reference prices of $129.95 for OpenRun and $179.95 for OpenRun Pro 2, a $50 difference. Independent deal coverage has shown that promotions can materially change street prices, so verify the current price, stock and any regional or size variation before buying.
The premium is easier to justify when you use the upgrades
The additional cost buys a combination of longer rated battery life, a documented short-charge result, newer dual-driver hardware and app-based EQ features. If you use those advantages every week, the premium is easier to justify than if the headset stays in a drawer between occasional workouts.
OpenRun is the better value when the basics are enough
OpenRun gives you the stronger water rating, lighter frame and lower reference price. Those are not cut-down versions of the same benefit: IP67 can be decisive for wet-weather runners, and 26 g can matter to weight-sensitive users. Paying more for Pro 2 does not improve those two characteristics.

A simple break-even test
- Write down your longest normal listening day.
- Mark whether you regularly train in heavy rain, rinse the headset or sweat heavily.
- Decide whether fixed sound is acceptable or whether EQ modes would change how you listen.
- Compare the current prices after checking promotions and model variants.
- Choose Pro 2 only if its battery, charging or sound-control benefits outweigh the lower water rating and extra weight for your routine.
Decision guide by use case
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Running in frequent rain | OpenRun | IP67 provides the stronger water-protection margin. |
| Heavy sweating and rinsing after workouts | OpenRun | Its rating is the one Shokz identifies as rinse-safe. |
| Longest battery between charges | OpenRun Pro 2 | Up to 12 hours versus OpenRun’s up to 8 hours. |
| Emergency charging before a workout | OpenRun Pro 2 | A 5-minute charge is rated for about 2.5 hours of music. |
| Lowest weight | OpenRun | Approximately 26 g versus approximately 30.3 g for standard Pro 2. |
| Sound customization | OpenRun Pro 2 | App support and multiple EQ modes are reported in Shokz materials. |
| Podcasts, calls and straightforward exercise music | OpenRun | The simpler design covers these uses without paying for Pro 2-specific controls. |
| Premium listening presentation | OpenRun Pro 2 | Its dual-driver air-and-bone-conduction approach is the newer design. |
| Lowest purchase cost | OpenRun | Its 2025 Shokz reference price was $50 below Pro 2. |
What to check before ordering
- Confirm the exact model: Check whether the listing is standard OpenRun, OpenRun Pro 2 or a “Mini” size variant.
- Check regional pricing: The cited prices are US reference figures from 2025 and may not match your country or today’s promotion.
- Verify stock and color: Availability and included options can change by region.
- Match water exposure honestly: If you expect heavy rain or rinsing, do not select Pro 2 merely because it is newer.
- Consider session length: If you routinely exceed eight hours between charges, Pro 2’s battery reserve has practical value.
- Decide whether EQ matters: If you will not use app controls, OpenRun’s simpler design may be the more sensible purchase.
Care and everyday-use considerations
Water resistance is not a license to charge a wet headset. After a rainy run or rinse, let the headset dry fully before connecting it to power. Keep sweat and water from pooling around charging contacts, and store either model where it can air out rather than sealing it away damp.
For open-ear listening, choose a volume that lets you remain aware of nearby activity. The design’s safety advantage comes from hearing your surroundings; playing music unnecessarily loud undermines that benefit. Recheck the fit after putting on hats, helmets or glasses, because anything that shifts the frame can affect comfort and perceived volume.
Bottom-line recommendation
For most runners who prioritize weather protection, low weight and price, buy Shokz OpenRun. Its IP67 rating is the decisive advantage, and its approximately 26 g frame is lighter.
Buy Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 when your priorities are longer listening sessions, quick top-ups, fuller sound from the newer dual-driver system or app-based EQ. The trade-offs are real: approximately 30.3 g of weight, an IP55 rating instead of IP67 and a higher reference price. Pick the model that matches your environment and listening schedule rather than assuming the newer model is automatically better.
